i dont know why you folks would WANT to keep the person alive to "teach them a lesson".with the strict rules in NC, it could flip and you could possibly get in trouble.if you shoot to kill, then its your word against a dead mans word.
7/30/2008 10:14:28 PM
good god, what if they get a trained medium?

this is a dumb questionI could, and I would.
7/30/2008 10:22:37 PM
i would never own a gun.. but if i was in that scenario, i'd probably shoot the guy in the leg or something. i don't really think that person would deserve to die
7/30/2008 10:23:21 PM
^ what if after you shot him in the leg he pulled out a gun and shot you in the face?
7/30/2008 10:24:30 PM
I wouldn't kill someone unless I really didn't like themIf I caught a robber, I'd probably just shoot him in the foot to somewhat immobolize himThen I would slit the corners of his mouth with a razor and proceed to kick him in the nutsSo that when he screamed, it would tear his mouth open even furtheraka a Glasgow Smile
7/30/2008 10:25:44 PM
^ see above ^^
7/30/2008 10:28:04 PM
nastouteI know you are trying to be anti-gun in this thread, and I agree with you... I really don't like guns. I am undecided on what I would do in this situation. What would you, nastoute, do? gun or no gun in a situation such as this.
7/30/2008 10:28:18 PM

7/30/2008 10:30:23 PM
depends on what i was armed with on where i would want to hit them but yes if i could i would shoot. if they are running, then take out a leg or ankle, not usually life threatening and makes it REAL hard to run away. a half dead limping crackhead that tried to break into my house is better than a dead one anyday but if all I have is a shotgun then im not gonna be picky, except about the type of rounds firing. i see no reason that in a house youd need buckshot to stop a threat. now if zombie vampires attack- i would prefer 00... but the distance across the average room in the average house these days is less than 20 ft and from there a lighter round will still stop an asshole in a hurry. along with the pain of a slow recovery. but with birdshot, in close quarters you get to shoot the son of a bitch, then kick him around a little while you tie him up with cat5 cable and holler 'citizens arrest!' at the top of your lungs...
7/30/2008 10:32:12 PM
I'd like to say that, if displaying my weapon and my intentions to use it didn't provoke the desired response, yes.In reality, I'd probably just panic and fire a bunch of shots in his general direction, and any actual hits would be largely coincidental.
7/30/2008 10:34:20 PM
hahah cat5 cable
7/30/2008 10:34:49 PM
shooot??? shit only if he has a gun i'd probably just attack the fucker otherwise.
7/30/2008 10:35:44 PM
I honestly don't know if I could shoot to kill, even if presented with a situation where I am required to do so. My guess is that I probably could, but I'd have some serious trouble living with the consequences.
7/30/2008 10:38:01 PM
i could care less if the dude is armed with a fucking peacock feather and wearing lipstick....if you are in my house at 2AM and I don't know you then you are getting dropped
7/30/2008 10:38:32 PM
I don't think I could shoot to kill UNLESS my family was in danger. The scenerio listed in the beginning initially tells me that we would be in danger and I would shoot for the chest. I would shoot a second shot after the mother fucker was shot and say that was my first "warning shot"...end of story.I'd probably be marred by horrific nightmares and guilt for the rest of my life, but I would second guess it if I thought the guy was going to hurt my family in any way.
7/30/2008 10:39:00 PM
^ my point is that if someone that you don't know has broken in your home and is standing in your living room, then you have to assume that your family IS in danger
7/30/2008 10:39:46 PM
^^Okay, granted. If I was in mortal danger or if my loved ones were in mortal danger, I'd have a lot more motivation to do it. But like you said, I still might bare a lot of guilt for it for a long time.^Not necessarily. Maybe they're just stealing your stuff. What they're doing makes a big difference. If somebody's stealing my shit, I might try to just scare them away. But if they're coming at me to kill me....[Edited on July 30, 2008 at 10:41 PM. Reason : blah]
7/30/2008 10:40:20 PM
^^yea thats exactly what I am sayingI wouldn't shoot to kill in ANY other situation...but with that amount of unknowns and my familys safety on the line---I'm aiming for the center of his chest
7/30/2008 10:41:58 PM
^^ read the whole thread. how do you know they are just stealing your stuff? if they are walking out the door with your TV, that is one thing. if they are just standing in your living room, you have no idea their intentions.....hence imminent dangeryou have no idea what weapons they might have or what their intentions are. you have a right to defend your house and your family[Edited on July 30, 2008 at 10:43 PM. If I felt seriously threatened (he came after me, made no attempt to escape) I would shoot. If he tried to run away, I would try my best to remember what he looked like and not shoot.
fuck thatdepending on the circumstances, I'd give serious thought to either giving chase or significantly slowing them...somehow. Paying attention to how they look is something you should do no matter what. Plan for all reasonable contingencies. Why?I intend to make sure they get their 1-on-1 counseling session with the sheriff's deputies.
7/30/2008 10:50:01 PM
7/30/2008 10:50:13 PM
^ yes it does. they broke into your fucking house in the middle of the night, that SCREAMS imminent danger to me. I would rather not take the chance that they are just some "poor defenseless burglar" and drop them to protect my family. and FYI, the law agrees[Edited on July 30, 2008 at 10:52 PM. Reason : a]
7/30/2008 10:51:36 PM
I would keep my gun aimed at him and attempt to make him stay, but if he left, I'm not chasing him, esp if it's dark or he can hide from me and jump out.
7/30/2008 10:52:40 PM
in this situation i meant to imply that they were a threat, most likely to steal from you
7/30/2008 10:53:17 PM
I'm not crazy about strangers entering my home in the middle of the night either, but before I cap somebody's ass I'm going to first make damn sure that they're actually trying to harm me or someone I care about. Breaking and entering isn't sufficient justification.
7/30/2008 10:53:25 PM
^ and how would you make sure? what happens if while you are "making sure" they pull out a gun and shoot you?
7/30/2008 10:58:39 PM
If someones coming inside while you're home, they have worse intentions than stealing your shit.A thief breaks in when you're gone and steals your shit.A home invader gets shot.
7/30/2008 10:59:10 PM
420!yep
7/30/2008 10:59:50 PM
You can draw your gun and keep it aimed at them, then demand that they explain who they are and why they're in your home. If they sprint and get out of there, you leave them be. If they attempt to draw their weapon, that's when you shoot.^^There's something to be said for that, but a bold or desperate enough thief can just as easily wait until you're asleep. Either way, he avoids a confrontation. The only difference is that waiting until you leave is a lot safer for him.[Edited on July 30, 2008 at 11:02 PM. Reason : blah]
7/30/2008 11:00:35 PM
what if i thought they were drawing their weapon but were actually trying to give me money out of their pocket?
7/30/2008 11:01:23 PM
i definitely couldn't....i've only shot a gun like three times...i'd be scared out of my mind
7/30/2008 11:02:37 PM
in a reall life situation, you shoot them in the chest. with all the adrenaline there is no way you can do the whole "put your hands up" routine
7/30/2008 11:03:18 PM
7/30/2008 11:05:17 PM
I think if I really felt like I or the people I care about were in danger, it would be instinctive.^^ probably accurate[Edited on July 30, 2008 at 11:07 PM. Reason : .]
7/30/2008 11:05:27 PM
If it's dark and you can't see what they're holding but they're definitely raising something up at you, you'd be justified in shooting them. If it is just a wad of cash like you said, then you made a mistake, but it's an understandable mistake that you can explain to the cops and jury when you have to answer for killing somebody. If you kill somebody, even if it's in self defense, you WILL have to stand before a jury to justify your actions. If you can convince them that you gave the perpetrator every opportunity to walk away without a confrontation, your chances are much better than if you just say that you shot somebody simply for trespassing onto your private property. The difference is in how much danger another person in your shoes could believably be in.
7/30/2008 11:06:26 PM
so long as retreat is not possiblei'd kill him dead.
7/30/2008 11:07:11 PM
^^, ^ if someone is in your house, you dont have to give them an opportunity to walk away...in nc, you dont have to retreat from your homeyou can blow them away

you are justified for shooting them just for being a strange motherfucker that broke into your living roomyou don't need to see a weapon or a "weapon-like shadow" to be justified[Edited on July 30, 2008 at 11:08 PM. Reason : a]

7/30/2008 11:09:33 PM
