so, yes, most of the money comes from endorsements, but a lot of professional athletes make more (although not the same ratio) from endorsements than playing the sport. see michael jordan, lebron james, reggie bush, etc.

^yea if you ever watch the track and field events, you get extra money based on performance like if you get a new personal record or finish in the top three or gain a certain number of performance points in a meet
