I think Michael Phelps is a "real" role model, and everyone else is simply the lies that they tell themselves and their sponsors.

In professional sports, there is a lot more to being a role model than being an amazing athlete.

you people who hate on Vick and want to prevent his return.... you hate America.

Really, you do. you're like promoting some kind of commie-fascist form of government, or something.

Look I love dogs more than football, but christalready, the man served his time and has been released.

he's paid for his crime with 2 years of his life and livelihood. and he served more time and paid more, than probably 99% of other people guilty of the same damn thing.

in addition, he's made a full unqualified public apology taking full blame for his actions and declaring what he did as unconscionably wrong.

you sons of bitches still want a pound of flesh. let the man go, already.

Michael Vick was none of these things. Is repentance possible? If so, does it mean anything to anyone? Apparently not to those who believe Vick should permanently be viewed as a social pariah.

There are players in the NFL who killed people - Donte Stallworth and Leonard Little took lives while drunk driving - its strange to me that there's been very little public outcry from these situations.

In my experience, the more someone values pets over people, the uglier they are.

Oh god I hate the Redskins, so I really hope these rumors are true. PLEASE FOOTBALL GODS, THROW ME A BONE FOR ONCE. This would be like when the Cowboys signed T.O.

Quote :

So if the rumors are true and Vick was indeed in the Washington area last night, it wouldn't be surprising if Vick was wearing burgundy and gold by the time training camp starts on Thursday."

Clearly, I have no control over the matter whatsoever, but if I did, I would definitely pressure the NFL to not re-hire Vick. That doesn't mean that the NFL would concur, as they obviously value the dollar over their integrity.

He has already been reinstated by the NFL. Now it is up to a team to "re-hire" him, and one will without a doubt.

The opportunity to get a top notch athlete like Vick for pretty much pennies will make the media circus worth it for some franchises.

Are we discussing what should be, or what will be? I'm well aware of what will ensue, the NFL has already made their move.

Most people who come with argument like this seem to be coming at the angle that players are normal people. They obviously aren't.

People that piss away gifts that 99.99% of the rest of the population wasn't born with should be treated more harshly than what the law, which was written with the 99.99% of us in mind, calls for.

Quote :
"There are players in the NFL who killed people - Donte Stallworth and Leonard Little took lives while drunk driving - its strange to me that there's been very little public outcry from these situations."

Because we expect athletes, and people in general, to get drunk and manslaughter people. It's reprehensible but it's usually the result of a night of partying and 1 poor decision, not an ongoing dog fighting enterprise like you're somehow above the law.

Quote :
"In my experience, the more someone values pets over people, the uglier they are."

Maybe because the pets don't judge them like humans?

I love my dog more than I love football as well.

But I would approve of reinstating someone that beats dogs over someone that beats their wife.

and PLENTY of NFL players beat their wives.

It's hard to tell if you're trying to be funny or if you're just outright retarded, either way if you love him so much why don't you marry him? It's like some bleeding heart plea for poor Michael Vick. There's more where he came from so kick him back to the ghetto and go grab someone else.

Vick didn't just beat the animals, he drowned them with his bare hands and even electrocuted them. Therefore, you need to expand your comments to say that you would approve of reinstating someone that kills dogs over someone that kills their wife. Did you read the entire Vick story?

And let it be known that I think Vick is a piece of shit. As did the judge that sent him to prison. But if criminals are routinely allowed to play in the NFL, why should this case be any different? In fact, if anything, he should be held in higher regard than many of the current NFL players whose criminal cases merely "went away". Dude did his time, which is a lot more than can be said for many pro-athletes who committed crimes and never so much as missed a game.

Acknowledging that he has served his time and paid his due to society is completely exclusive to condoning his actions.

You know you can accept that he has "done the crime, paid his time" and still hold the reprehensible act for what it is, right?

the whole point of prison is rehabilitation. if prisoners do their time, but yet are not allowed to rejoin society, then what is the point?

AFTER he got caught. There's a big difference in being sorry because you realize what you did was wrong and being sorry you got caught. Society FORCED him to "repent" he didn't do it on his own.

Why do you love this guy so much?

some current athlete's mug shots for your enjoyment / to prove my point:

Ricky Williams: The NFL's resident pothead

Mike Tyson: How often has this dude been reinstated? Rape and Coke charges

John Daly: The PGA's resident alcoholic

Cedric Benson: NFL Runningback, charged with DUI and resisting arrest

Kobe Bryant: Possibly the best NBA player in history. Sexual assault

I'll find some more later

you have such poor reading comprehension. i forget i have to write at a 6th Grade level for you.

if he does his time, and pays the price, but is denied the ability to return to his career, then he is NOT able to return to his place in society.

what do you people expect him to do with the rest of his life? wash dishes at Red Lobster?

Quote :
"Lazersoup: There's a big difference in being sorry because you realize what you did was wrong and being sorry you got caught. Society FORCED him to "repent""

you, also, have no ability to comprehend anything less than concrete.

there are plenty of people who are found guilty but who neither apologize nor repent. society does not and can not force anyone to apologize or repent. they only can force someone to spend time in jail and give up money.

additionally, by Vick admitting he was wrong and apologizing, was an admission of guilt and weakness -- he threw himself upon the mercy of the court and public opinion.

not only did that action expose Vick to potentially harsher penalties in the legal system, it diminished his street cred within the prison population that he was bound to face for the next couple years.

if he was really a gangster, he would have said "fuck your honky judicial system, I ain't guilty of of a gotdam thing. You can throw my black ass in jail, but you bitches ain't getting a word out of me."

He would have wound up serving the same amount of time, and cemented his street cred, but he didnt do that. he apologized for his actions, he apologized to his fans, he apologized to the city of Atlanta, he said he was completely wrong and sorry for what he did.

Then went and faced his consequences.

now that, IMO, takes a strong person to do that.

I can tell you're trolling because you aren't this retarded, but thats EXACTLY what he needs to do with the rest of his life. The punishment the law imposes and the one society imposes are two different things.

i guess what we need to do is just sentence anyone that commits a felony to life in prison. Since, you know, once they get out we won't hire them anyway. Which is most likely the reason they go back into their life of crime. FUCK REHABILITATION

I like how when he got out of prison he was going to work construction while he was still on house arrest, to make some money and stay in shape...but he quit after less than a week because it was too hard for him

So somebody gives him a job right out of prison, somebody with a big heart tries to help rehabilitate an ex-con just coming out of prison after being found guilty of a felony, but he quits within a week because its too hard for him

POOR MICHAEL VICK

I am in no way making a case that he is a victim. I am just making a case that it is not wrong he got reinstated, considering how many fucking criminals are currently on NFL rosters. He shouldn't be held to a different standard based on the publicity / cruelty of his crime.
