i remembered you saying in this thread http://thewolfweb.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=542689&page=1 that your favorite bands were groups like the pixies, the stooges, the clash, beach boys, sonic youth etc. i know you seem to have a pretty extensive knowledge of music, but my experience with all of those groups is that none of their styles or songs lend themselves well to going into extended jams, although sonic youth does have some material that gets lengthy. so idk. maybe your aversion to jam bands stems from the fact that most of your favorite stuff is short and to the point for the most part. however, for someone who claims to know as much about music and be as opinionated as you are, you should know that At Fillmore East by the allman brothers band is one of, if not the, greatest live albums of all time.

also, most of the stuff on a jam band's studio albums isn't even all that long, so i don't get what your problem with the entire genre is. you can avoid the shows if you don't want to sit through a 12 minute version of a song, but a lot of the recordings are pretty solid that i have come across.

Jam band music (that is musically good) is generally good enough to be background music when something else is the focus. I would never pay for it in any form, though. Except perhaps for the Allman Brothers...

That said, I dislike "background music" in general. If I am listening to music while doing some other task, the music will end up shifting to the foreground and whatever I'm doing will be secondary. If it's boring music, I will become bored. Fuck boring music (e.g. most jam band music).

This is basically how I feel, but much more succinct than I am capable of being.

As for At Fillmore East, I like the first side, but then it loses me. I'm a much bigger fan of Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out! as classic live albums go.

The point that I like pop songs and pop artists is well-taken, but illustrates my general feeling about jam bands. They're not bad, as they're generally comprised of fine musicians who are doing their working in earnest, but I more often than not find their work to be boring.

Someone made the point of turning one's brain off and just enjoying something, but I find it very hard to do such a thing, and when I do, I'm looking to bypass the intellectual in favor of a visceral connection with music, something along the lines of the Stooges.

i couldnt disagree more with the whole "turning your brain off and enjoyng it" attitude

thats horseshit, some people may enjoy passively listening to notes and melodies but im much more of an active listener, i find that when you dont have words getting in the way you pay attention to the music a lot more.

I tend to ignore the words and listen to the character of the vocal during a song, then examine the words more closely on a third or fourth listen. Lyrics aren't a barrier between active and passive listening.

I overheard a friend of mine saying that he dislikes music with vocals for this same reason, and I thought it was pretty stupid. Next you're going to tell me that you only like silent films because the dialogue distracts from the cinematography.

yes because film and music are two totally similar mediums

^nobody said they were the same, but I think dialogue in films and vocals in music are certainly comparable...if you can't pay attention to both vocals and the accompanying music then you have issues that you should probably receive medication to treat. I can understand liking music that doesn't have any vocals in it, but disliking music BECAUSE it has vocals is ridiculous.

I don't see how it's an absurd comparison at all, dialogue in film just like vocals in music add an extra dimension to the experience of watching or listening...just because they are different mediums doesn't mean that they have nothing in common.

right, it kind of seemed like thats what you were implying, but my statement was more a response to the argument I've heard from some of my friends who are into jam bands that do in fact dislike music that has vocals in it, which I really don't understand.

once again, i never said they have nothing in common, i just said that they are dissimilar enough that this comparison is invalid. One is a primarily visual medium in which dialogue is almost necessary to truely appreciate the movie. you need conversation and moreso than just printing words on a screen in between takes, you need to hear inflection and tone to really gather meaning from any decent movie. dialogue is necessary.

music is obviously not visual and any number of its components could be removed and a song, while maybe not as good is still understandable and discernable. vocals are not necessary, guitar is not necessary, drums are not necessary. any of these can be taken out or switched with another instrument. Ive heard great instrumental cover versions of pop songs with a violin or a piano or some other instrument mimicking the vocals of the song that came across as better than the original. vocals are an added dimension, dialogue is necessary.

and i'm not implying i dont like music with vocals. i love music with vocals. all i was saying is in MY experience (i.e. this only refers to me and I'm not assuming anyone else feels this way) when I go to a concert I tend to find MYSELF singing along to any words i know. it's fun to do. it does distract me from the music but then again, the most interesting music occurs when the vocals end anyway. I dont agree with anyone close minded enough to say "I dont like music that doesnt fit my idea of what music should be" without listening to it first, whether its music with vocals or music that has extended improvisation segments or music made by monkeys banging rubber dildos together.

this is so misguided it's almost painful to read...have you never seen any silent films? Modern Times is a great film that's easily a 1000 times more meaningful than 95% of the movies made in this day and age. There are a ton of other examples of great silent films out there if you bothered to seek them out. In general, I like movies with dialogue better than those without it (just like I like music with vocals better in general) but to say dialogue is necessary for a movie to be meaningful is just as ridiculous as saying that music needs to have vocals to be meaningful.

I don't necessarily disagree with saps as far as the course of this argument goes, but dude, you gotta admit that "dialogue is necessary" is a silly notion.

Sooo....does that mean Chopin, Mahler, Strauss, Vivaldi, etc. are sub-par without lyrics?

i often find that bands who don't have lyrics end up working a lot harder to make their instrumentals better. but that doesn't mean that there aren't plenty of bands who can do both. for instance, the fact that a silver mt zion started to use lyrics in most of their songs after a while (where they had previously not) does not make their instrumental lines any less interesting (in fact i'd say they've grown in that regard). i would say the same about do make say think.

i think the question "why do [white] people like jam bands?" is sort of like "why do black people smoke menthols?"

answer: no one knows

When did I ever say music without lyrics was sub-par? You obviously don't have very good reading comprehension skills. I said I think it's stupid to dislike music BECAUSE it has vocals.
