Boo to insomnia.

Yay for wine wooziness though.

Does anyone else like noise when they're trying to sleep?

I love to fall asleep to the sound of loud fans, thunderstorms, washing machines and dishwashers. Getting to sleep is no prob. It's just staying asleep that sucks.

I SLEPT TODAY! on the train to DC - 2 whole hours of uninterrupted bliss.. i think it was the rhythmic clacking of the rails. i dunno but it was fantastic.

^ yes, i love regular (fans, driving on a concrete interstate, etc) or white noise (like fans)

^ i don't get how you can take it so late. oh wait i guess if you are in cali then it isn't actually that late.

ugh i can't sleep! i was SO tired before and i'm still tired but i just can't sleep. i was reading and then i was tired and then i was going to sleep and then my neighbors were watching a movie at like the loudest volume possible and i put in earplugs but it still didn't help.

now i'm eating a bowl of cereal. ugh.

If you have an iPhone, there's an app to that called White Noise. it's free and you can hook it up to the speakers.

I find that stuff helps me get to sleep too.

^^^ and ^^ it's not Ambien CR. It's zolpidem (aka generic Ambien). It kicks in after about 30-45 minutes and is completely out of your system in 2-3 hours. Once I'm asleep I am fine, but I never get tired.

^ I have several iPhone apps like that, they only work for me on airplanes.

a: can be bad at times depending on how stressed out i am.

B: i have a high stress job. racing thoughts.....cant make my mind shut off.....if it has been a bad night at work i rehash everything i did to figure out if i did something wrong..........basically second-guess myself and generally beat myself up about it........go me. also i work night shift so my circadian rhythm is uber fucked.

c. sleep when i can and go back to work the next night exhausted and irritable. tried trazodone......i woke up hungover and disoriented with orthostatic hypotension........not good.

ambien... didnt always make me go to sleep, or i might not get the 7-8 hours worth of time for it to clear my system........and then my depth perception would be fucked for a while upon awakening due to double vision.......also not good.

if i am completely desperate ill start studying for the CCRN exam...........that usually puts me out.

melatonin helps sometime, ive also tried l-tryptophan.

drinking to get to sleep isnt a good idea.............the sugars in it will cause to to wake up esp if you even remotely have hypoglycemic tendencies. this is due to the sugar crash... it makes your adrenals secrete adrenalin which wakes you up.

it sucks so much to try to sleep after an especially brutal night of work. multiple adrenaline rushes followed by a "crash" which leads to chugging tons of sugar filled caffeinated beverages........which leads to a "sugar crash" .............rinse repeat. i go home with a completely exhausted body and exhausted adrenals, but i cant sleep because MY FUCKING BRAIN WILL NOT SHUT UP. It helps if coworkers and i go to the local diner to unwind and eat breakfast and have a beer... helps me debrief and then i get to take a lovely carb induced coma ala thanksgiving dinner.

on my days off: i can sleep like the dead.....it is glorious.

for most insomiacs...........routines routines routines.......establish them and stick to them. The act of the bedtime ritual will tell your brain its time to sleep. go to bed at the same time each night when possible and get up at the same time each day(even on the weekends).

yeah I have heard nothing but bad things about CR. Just makes you a half awake zombie for 8 hours. Regular ol' Ambien will knock you the fuck out. Speaking of which, I'm about to take mine

insomnia...always....I will not take pills for this though(not judging anyone that does by all means, my problems just come from horrible sleep schedule)

im going to take some melatonin, but it always makes me sleep longer than i want to. also, i took it for the last couple nights and it seems to lose its efficacy

Speaking from my own experience, medium-strength pills work great for adjusting a sleep schedule (when you know you won't be able to make yourself go to sleep by sheer force of will). And I don't end up oversleeping or anything either. And they're easy to ignore for a late-night weekend.

Then again, you might have totally different experiences if you tried them. Also, I don't technically have insomnia, just something called Delayed Sleep-Phase Syndrome (basically my natural cycle is about 5 hours too late, and my ability to sleep is fairly unaffected by light levels/sundown/sunrise).

^they originally put me on 5mg of Ambien. Which for a normal person will knock you out cold in a few minutes.

But it didn't work at all. Did some tests and found out I basically have a super liver, and a lot of body mass. So doubled the dosage and it still takes about twice as long to kick in as normal. My guess is 2-5mg of Ambien (regular not CR) would work great

I take it every night I need to go to sleep at a "normal" time of night (usually midnight-1AM). Works great for me, so far haven't had any negative side-effects (been taking it about a month now). But the "Do not take on a full stomach" warning on the bottle is pretty important... If I take one too soon after a nighttime snack, it hardly does anything. If I've eaten too much, I can feel the drowsiness hit but it usually isn't enough.

Also, if you're anything like me, you need to be in bed ready to sleep 5-10 minutes after you take it, regardless of how much you've eaten. If for whatever reason I'm up and around, the effects are easy to ignore (there's no trip-out after the initial wave of drowsiness like some people have on Ambien, either - I didn't have one, anyway).
