"^ you should watch the Stanley Kubrick black comedy, "Doctor Strangelove"

the story starts with an air force general who goes batshit insane, and uses his comand to launch a surprise nuclear attack on the Russians... he thinks flouridation is a communist plot to rob God-fearing Americans of their "precious bodily fluids".

being part German, you'll really enjoy the character Dr. Strangelove (hilariously played by Peter Sellers) who is a German (ex-Nazi) scientist that the Americans consult on how to win a nuclear war with the Soviets, if they can't recall the nuclear bombers.

Middle of nowhere antique shops are goldmines for books like that. Every time I visit my grandmother in the mountains I try to go to one and see what they have. I have a pretty good selection of eugenics, parenting, and good housekeeping books from pre-WWII.

I was spanked, and I occasionally spank my daughter.

I HATE HATE HATE doing it, but at her age, she can't yet be reasoned with.

She can, however, grasp that if she doesn't listen to what I say, that she will feel a little pain. Generally, just the threat of a spanking is enough to get her to stop doing what she should not be doing.

fluoride is actually a waste product of aluminum plants. this isn't the first time that a PR campaign has been used to convince people that a poison is good for us, like DDT for instance.

"the fluoride deception" is a good place to start if you want to know more about it.

if you don't want to look into it yourself, that's fine, it's all up to you. at the end of the day, you'll either know or you won't know. i've provided just a small amount of information, the ball is now in your court.

Every parent and potential parent should click the link at the end of this post.

Quote :
"By 'beating', I mean 'far, far more severe than a spanking, but not anything to cause permanent harm'. Sometimes kids need to have new skin colors for a week or two."

That's child abuse, plain and simple.

If you bring your kids up right and are properly involved parents, then there would be no need to resort to even spanking. Beating like you described should never be done, unless they tried to kill or rape someone, even then no.

There are 3 types of parents:

Authoritarian
Authoritative
Permissive

If only the majority of the parents in the world were of 2nd type, there would be far far less crimes and wars in the world.

Parents in Asia and Africa (and I think South America) are mostly of the 1st type, and parents in Europe and USA/Canada are mostly of type 3. But things are changing, and interestingly enough, current young first time parents in the different geographical regions are different from how their parents were. Asian and African new parents are sadly becoming more and more permissive, and White parents are becoming more and more of type 2, which is a good thing.

I pulled that out of my ass, so I have no data to support it, only my observations of thousands of parents in the last couple of decades.

But what remains true is that if more parents chose type 2, the world would be a much better place.

And what goes without saying is that fatherless homes produce horrible kids in general way more than homes with 2 parents. But some liberals would contest it, even in the face of overwhelming data.

*************************************************************************

My personal beliefs:

I don't believe in punishment and reward ("conditional parenting") when it comes to kids. I think they are more harmful in the long run. Do you want your kids to do the HW because they will get a treat, or should they do it to become good responsible adults one day?

Do you want your kids to avoid misbehaving (or whatever) because they will get punished for it? Are we all avoiding killing/robbing/raping each other because we would be punished for it?

I know many of you will say here that we are adults, and kids can't be reasoned with like that, but I believe they can be. I will find out soon enough when my daughter is a bit older.

Read this book to learn how, and other books by Dr. Kevin Leman:

Making Children Mind without Losing Yours
http://www.amazon.com/Making-Children-without-Losing-Yours/dp/B002KMJ0EI/

Other titles:

- Have a New Kid by Friday: How to Change Your Child's Attitude, Behavior & Character in 5 Days
- What a Difference a Daddy Makes: The Indelible Imprint a Dad Leaves on His Daughter's Life
- Bringing Up Kids Without Tearing Them Down How To Raise Confident, Successful Children

We have some of his books, and they are good.

*************************************************************************

This might be the first empirical evidence that conditional parenting is bad for them in the long run:

Yes, but since the thread has taken a serious turn, I thought I would post something that just might help parents and future parents.

Addendum to my long post:

How does Supernanny do it? She doesn't approve of beating, and her results are nothing short of phenomenal and unbelievable... now some of you will say she is a professional. True, but we can learn similar techniques. I think everybody should watch a few episodes of Supernanny.

The American version, I haven't seen it so I don't know how good it is, but I am sure it must be similarly excellent.

I was frequently hit with a belt when I did anything slightly out of line as a kid. It was always my mom, my dad thought I was a freaking perfect child compared to his two boys.

I remember getting a spanking for eating jello with my fingers after some of my friends did the same thing.

By the time I got to high school, mom just switched to verbally duking it out.

^ that's what my wife and i do. our kid (4 years old) still misbehaves at times, but it's entirely manageable and we never, ever have to hit him.

i just dont give a fuck what the Old Testament says. you don't have to beat kids to teach them respect and self control.
