I think some of the best cars to learn drive stick on are 2002+ Honda Civics. They have a very forgiving clutch and heavy flywheel. They're pretty hard to stall.

fuck a honda, the best thing to learn on is anything that's got enough torque that its easier not stall in first

^^ usually a heavy flywheel goes right along with little torque

I taught my daughter's mother to drive a manual in my Evo IX. It was a shitshow. The car was stock, and I'd owned stuff a lot faster, so I didn't think about it being overwhelming to someone trying to learn to drive a manual who was used to driving a Grand Am or Ford Escape.

I was wrong. It was twice as powerful as anything she'd ever driven, not to mention the power delivery characteristics of a turbocharged engine with ~20 psi of boost. The go-kartlike super fast steering probably didn't help, either.

We practiced driving around the neighborhood at 15-20 mph. Once she kinda had that down, we pulled out on to a regular road, and it damn near got away from her. She was all over the place, screaming, etc. She finally said "I don't like driving this car...it's too fast."

[Edited on October 1, 2009 at 3:35 PM. Reason : TOO FAST? What in the hell are you talking about?]

A guy was going to teach me on a Civic at one point but he said he thought I may actually be too short because of how far the clutch had to be pushed back, or something.

Pussies. All of you.

When I was 16, I was shifting a Mack 7 speed.

I learned to drive stick on a '70 Ford with a three on the tree and a warped flywheel. And the shifter was fucked up to boot. I got to where I could shift that bitch faster than most folks can shift a floor shifter.

who waits til they're 16 to learn to drive?

i did the on-road part of my driver's ed before school in the mornings with a teacher who taught me in 6th and 8th grades. when he picked me up the first morning he said "we're gonna skip the parking lot part cause i know you've already been driving around the farm and stuff" and i was like "yeah, that blazer in the driveway there is mine already"

I re-taught my mom (had been about 30 years) how to drive on a turbocharged civic. She drove it just fine. Borrowed it for an entire week. Actually she learned in all of about 5 minutes I was amazed. I guess its like riding a bike. Said she never once stalled it and only had minor issues in reverse.

I didn't get behind the wheel of a car til after 18...might have even been 20.

i.e., the answer to your question is "children of parents who are so overprotective that they don't even let their high schoolers wait for the bus alone three houses down the street"

Mom was always raging against the "transients" who'd rented a few houses in the neighborhood - college kids, and the horrific dangers they COULD pose to my sister.

the first time I drove a car by myself I was 10 years old, and I had run tractors before that. a girl driving a straight drive is no big deal, but it is getting hard to find them that can shift one on the steering column. My wife and my mother can drive the old 68 Ford I have, but they do not like to due to its lack of power steering and its marginal brakes.

It depends...there are all different varieties of these shemale transmissions. What's by far the most important, in my opinion, is whether or not it utilizes a torque converter (a conventional automatic transmission that can more easily, if for some odd reason you wanted to, have gears selected manually by the driver) or an automated clutch (either a single or dual clutch setup...this is a manual transmission with automated shifting, which is very different--and far superior for spirited driving).

^ Nothing. Once you're used to driving a manual, you never even think about it, and heavy traffic isn't an issue at all.

Shit, I probably think more about driving an automatic...mostly when I stop and have to park it (i usually kill the engine, then remember I have to put it in park when it won't let me remove the key). I also stomp on the floorboard with my left foot sometimes (and once or twice, have accidentally hit the brake with my left foot when reflexively going for the clutch).

Yep, I once drove my old Jeep all the way from the Varsity Park & Ride to the Capital Building downtown--and back again--and only used the clutch once, just to start off initially.

haha, most people have probably never even seen a 3-on-the-tree.
