i don't know if jason says parks. he's on vacation this week, otherwise i'd ask him.

my mom, grandma, rest of my family says parks. it's like nails on a chalkboard to me. mom and grandma also say "akern" and "halapeena"

I'm from Maryland, which is below the Mason-Dixon line, but above DC, so I get called a northerner by anyone below DC and a southerner by anyone above the Mason-Dixon line.

WHAT IS MY IDENTITY?

"Heres something that's probably not a "southern" thing, but is always an issue ... When it's getting too hot and you need to cool off, do you say:

"Turn the AC down"

or

"Turn the AC up"

I avoid it all:
If I'm at home, I adjust it myself.
If I'm calling it in at work, I just say "Make it colder/warmer".

Here's a question: do you push buttons, or mash them?
--

People always ask me where I'm from. Most of the time, for simplicity's sake, I say "north carolina". I've lived here >2/3 my life, so I'm rounding up Other times, I'll say "north carolina, more or less", and if they go HUHWAT, I explain dad was USAF when I was younger, but we moved here permanantly when I was a kid.

I will always be southern to my in-laws, despite being born in colorado, raised by a minnesotan, and not being baptist or pentecostal. Because I say "yall" and "fixin' to"

...not that it matters a lick

my confederate gr-gr-grandfather almost died in a POW camp after he was captured by union forces near Wilmington. many of his friends did die there. that POW camp, "Point Lookout", was in Maryland and was staffed by Union soldiers from Maryland regiments.

had he perished, like so many thousands of his fellow soldiers, he would have never lived to father any children.

i hope you feel good that your forebears almost caused the non-existence of a fellow T-Dubber

tell me, killer, how does it feel?

yes it's easier to exploit a pool of cheap labor if there's enough of them around

it's so inconvenient to have to worry about whether your workers ultimately live or die

Oh, by the way, you can consider yourself a southerner if you have ever referred to a gay person as a "got-dayum fudge packer"

And way back in the college years, before most of you had even gotten out of elementary school, we called the remote our pushbutton nigger.

he was from Beaufort County, they didnt have any slaves. Coastal NC (like western NC) was actually extremely reluctant to get in the war, as they didnt feel much sympathy or commonality towards the plantation slave economy in the Piedmont and Deep South. Their collective influence is what helped keep NC from joining the Confederacy for as long as it did.

But once NC declared, every able body went to fight. because loyalty to state was right up there with god and family.

and FTR i havent talked about my dad's union side (he was from PA, but had a gr-grand fought from Maine).

Might I suggest some of you do some reading to educate yourselves then come back and see how completely ignorant you are on this subject.

You are clueless about your own heritage...

Start with "The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government" by Jefferson Davis....

LOL, yeah I'm going to take suggestions on credible scholarship from bigun20.

okay, yeah, thanks for the "help", and I'm really happy for you that you can quote a primary source or two, but i believe i've been able to study the Civil War quite well on my own, thank you.

^^^ agreed. the union was less than 80 years old (compare 220, now) and was a lot of skepticism about the ability of the federal government to be impartial to the states' various needs or even maintain cohesion.

so, people's first loyalty was to their state.

and, today, other than the size of the federal "state" I don't see how it's much different. see, for example:

Quote :
"'Murrica. Fuck yea. You either wit' us, or again' us"

I was born in SC then moved to NY before I knew what I was. Lived there until I was 18 down south and now move every two years. It was VA-NC-TN.

Am I a southerner? I have an accent, unfortunately, and I hate rednecks. lol

Born in the south, raised in the north!

Oh and I call soda "coke" when referring to the brown drink and people are like "Is Pepsi okay?" "YES OKAY FUCKSHIT?" lol I say soda if talking in general about soda...

Depends on what you're defending and why I suppose. Simply picking up a gun because there may be a change in government, though, is ridiculous.

That opinion fits how I feel about "being southern." I was born and raised in Raleigh/Cary area, so I hardly can call myself a southerner. Yes, there are some southern things I enjoy...but that's all it. Oh, and I do say "y'all" haha!
