"On the premise that time is money and biking takes 20 minutes longer each way than driving, at an entry-level engineer's $30/hr. you get a total cost of:

40 minutes a day * 1 hour / 60 minutes * $30 / 1 hour * 5 workdays per week = $100

This does not include any extra usage of facilities such as showering or laundry. I spend far less than $20 a day on gasoline, even when gas was unbelievably expensive and I drove 45 miles each way. Bikes are a cost and only benefits are health (if you don't get hit) and enjoyability as a hobby.
"

how does that work out for a C student in film from a tech school?

From the biography of Stephen Spielberg:

Quote :
"After moving to California, he applied to attend the film school at University of Southern California School of Theater, Film and Television three separate times, but was unsuccessful due to his C grade average."

You DO realize that entire comparison argument is fucking moot when you still own a car, right? I really hope that majoring in watching TV didn't make you too dumb to realize that.

Also, pilgrimshoes won the fuck out of this thread with this:

i feel like i'm superior to people still behoven to automobiles, and it's another hting i can turn my nose up at.

i know deep inside

i'm still a prick and everyone hates me"

--

to address the original topic, I'll be biking to work starting the first week of November. I live 3.9 miles from my office, but I've also had to take my kid to daycare for the last year and a half, thus I had to drive. In a couple of weeks, I'll be leaving her with my neighbor, and will be able to bike in every day. I'm not doing it to save $3 a week or to be green or whatever . To a small extent, it'll keep me in shape, but mostly, it's more fun than driving.

I also do not care if people choose to drive to work. I feel no air of superiority over folks who choose to drive.

Little know fact about Spielburg: He used his personal bike, the one he rode to work every day, in the iconic moon scene in E.T.

Not really, I admit that you need a four wheeled covered gas powered vehicle for the most extreme situations, but in terms of price a bike is going to be cheaper in the long run regardless. That was my point, to illustrate the cost of ownership.

Heh.

There's no superiority, I just think a lot of people don't realize how fun and easy it is.

most people don't want to bike at 8am.
no way im biking 11 miles to and from work every day.
busy streets, especially at rush hour, a bike just creates an unnecessary hazard.
after a day at work i just want to be home.

The cost of ownership argument is only valid if you choose the bike and eschew vehicle ownership. I don't think any reasonable person will deny that.

Otherwise if you already own a car, and then have to buy all that equipment to bike to work, it'd take you years to make up the cost in gas savings and vehicle maintenance.

I'll agree with you on one point. It's fun -- and maybe easy depending on where you live in relation to work. The triangle is not the most bike friendly part of the world.

God's argument is akin to a married person mocking other married people, because he has a mistress that he fucks on the side, while they don't

except his wife is hot, and his mistress is ambrosia

Many reasons:

I live 30 miles from work.

Work is outside the city, accessed by a highway, literally 5 miles into the desert off the highway.

I live in a desert climate (1.5 seasons) with temperatures reaching 120 degrees under the sun.

I live in a country where people drive like murderous maniacs.

Yeah, if someone brought a bike inside the office here, the seat would be replaced by a dildo in 5 minutes

I enjoy mountain biking for sport and leisure, but still drive to work. I do it for fun and exercise mainly, but have brought my bike to work to bike on my lunch break, since I'm near a lot of trails in the North Raleigh area.

i'd love to bike to work

but i live in a hot as fuck and rainy motherfucking city. not to mention the insane traffic and 8 lane highways.

i also really enjoy listening to XM radio and drinking my coffee on the way in. and i enjoy the occasional early morning phone call as well.

work is 13 miles away but i only go there half the time

SOMETIMES I WORK FROM HOME AND DONT USE A CAR OR A BIKE

anyway, i'd actually like to bike for recreational purposes and i have to drive to a park, which kind of defeats the purpose. but thats what you get when you live in a car city
