Georgia Tech - Accepted
Illinois Tech - DENIED!

btw AstralAdvent, you might've gotten into more schools had you known to not end a sentence in a preposition.

The thread title should be "To what other schools did you apply?"

State was the only decent engineering school in the state for a power focus in electrical engineering, and out of state tuition was too expensive. Applying anywhere else would have been a waste of $100.

I think UNC Charlotte has a power program now also, but it's not as well known.

NCSU

I was accepted to all.... full scholarship. Decided just to go to NCSU, so I would feel more comfortable posting on TWW

The only other I applied to was NYU and I fully intended to go there. Had a full financial aid package but my family pointed out that I'd barely be able to afford eating and otherwise living in NYC, so I submitted my NCSU application the day before the deadline and settled for that.

Let's see:

Wake Forest
NCSU
UNC
Appalachian State
Seton Hall

Accepted everywhere. Originally decided to go to Wake, changed my mind to come to State for engineering only to be out of engineering after a year.

Still don't regret the decision though. I loved going to State.

In order of preference:

Duke
Tulane
Harvard
Stanford
NC State
Rutgers
Florida State
Furman (in-state safety for me)

Got in everywhere, but it came down to money. I got half-scholarships at all four of the top choices, but that still meant $20K+ a year at all four, so I came to NCSU on the cheap instead.

For grad school round 1, only applied to Cambridge (in England, not Massachusetts).

For grad school round 2, applied to

Princeton
Columbia
MIT (rejected)
Berkeley
RAND
Virginia Tech

applied to GaTech, NCSU, Stanford, UC Berkeley, CalTech, and MIT (just to see if I could get in)

Got into them all but CalTech and MIT, and was gonna go to Stanford, but the whole accident thing happened and I didn't want to be that far away from my folks and my doctors who saved my life. I went to NCSU and don't have many regrets. Ended up finishing two degrees at NCSU, MS and PhD at GaTech, and almost got a job at Stanford.

Undergrad: UNC, NCSU, and Furman. Got into all, decided on NCSU because it was less pretentious than UNC and was more focused on Ag/plants.

Grad: U of Arizona, NCSU. Just go into NCSU, which was fine, cause I have a house and didn't want to move.

- Furman (accepted)
- NCSU (accepted)
- Tulane (accepted)
- Virginia Tech (deferred)
- UC-Berkeley (denied because I was a dumbass and didn't take the SAT 2s in time)

In the spirit of the pissing contest from page 2, and since it was mildly entertaining...

One school applied, one school accepted is fucking lame when it's as safe as NC State. I had the balls to do it for graduate school at one of the top universities in the entire world, an ocean away.

Yeah I was pretty sure I'd get into NCSU-- I applied to Arizona b/c I love UA and Tucson. At the time I didn't know jack shit about colleges and what's good and what's not in the field I was interested in, and well, I was lazy so when I got into NCSU I didn't bother applying anywhere else. If I go back for my phd, I'll try to find some place more prestigious Only prestigious school w/ plant breeding is probably Berkley tho, and I heard bad things about trying to get in and then find money to pay for it.

NCSU - Accepted

Had no desire to go out of state, or major in something like poetry at UNC.

haha, Slave. While money is important, it should never define you. I'm no saint though, I've definitely followed the money just like you and it is nice to have success, despite not having a Masters and/or a PhD yet. In fact, it just motivates me more to get advanced degrees. But I'll go the practical route, as always, and let my company pay for it, while continuing to push the proverbial promotion ceiling as high as I can until it plateaus. Being smart, or smarter, does not mean acquiring as many academic degrees as possible. A piece of paper should never define you either. There are many types of smart and many ways to achieve success in life.

^^ It's not like this thread hasn't been done 47 times before, asking any number of variants on the same theme. We're just padding at this point.

^ So are you implying that an easy school was your step up in the world for grad school, or that you settled for an easy school to get your PhD?

going to grad school is more about what research you want to do rather than the school itself

I was accepted to better schools, but my top 2 were state and U of delaware.

as I understand it, the following things are all really fucking important

1. the name on your diploma
2. the reputation of your thesis advisor and committee members
3. current professional interest in your particular branch of your field

was getting hounded by Washington University in St. Louis, University of Miami, and Wake through my junior year. Pretty much could've gone to any of those since all the people in admissions at each school knew me.

I ruled them all out due to cost and/or distance, due to the fact that my mom died that year and I didn't want to go too far - in distance or debt.

I decided my senior year - applied to State and got in.

My dad wanted me to apply to ECU because he picked up his masters there - I said "F that."

basically that

the army national guard kept coming to band and trying to steal me. kinda weird. i assume it was because my band director was high up in the guard. kept saying they could use a good sax player in the guard. my response was always i would never make it through boot camp, but thanks.
