well if you'd stop going to the danged old shelter and looking at the danged old animals, then you'd be oblivious to the danged old dogs and cats getting put down

what if she hates cats

oh nooooooo. now i'm stressed out. i shouldn't have gone to the shelter!

it's not like you can't return the dog later if she does in fact hate cats

(worked at this shelter.... trust me, people do it a lot.)

After putting down animals and working there, I've learned you just can't save them all, even if you contact every rescue group out there, etc. Honestly, if she's got an upper respiratory infection, they're not going to play around with that - shit spreads like wildfire

well yes you can't save them all

but i was going to adopt her anyway todayyyy. she was supposed to get cat tested but she had been at the shelter since 11/12 so they said to put the do not put to sleep thing on her just incase so she wouldn't be euthanized yesterday or today

but the upper respiratory infection is easily treatable with the antibiotics right?

cause that is what my cat had when i got her (same deal) and they sent me home with free antibiotics and then she was fine

eh, depends... if it's just a simple one then I would expect so and she should do fine, but I also remember when we had a mass break out of an upper respiratory virus that no one had experienced before - it caused massive infections and we had to put down a lot of dogs because of it

(don't get scared by that, it was also about 3 years ago.. I would just be paranoid because of it)

ohhhh noooo

ok i think i'm just going to go back and talk to them because i have about a trillion questions and i'd rather talk to someone face to face than over the phone.

then we will see.

i don't want my other animals to get sick but i also really wanted this dog. ugh. this sucks.

so she's here. yay. saved from execution.

between 6mo and a year old they say.

is utd on her shots becauseeee she was an owner surrender and they gave vet proof of shots

she does have an upper respiratory thing i'm a little wary about - but both of my cats had it when i got them and they cleared up like asap after starting on the meds so i'm hoping she will too

cats are interested in her and she doesn't seem to give an eff about the cats but they need to be isolated for now so that they don't get sick too. hopefully after she is on her meds for a few days if they accidentally come into contact w/ each other no one will get sick.

she is in my room which i felt was best because i can just wash my sheets and everything after she is "cured"

i just hope she gets cured

she seems good. pulls on the leash a little but no surprise. i had to put her in a harness for now because she kept slipping out of the collar that she had on (the one she came with). but i don't like the harness i got (go figure) because it doesn't help with the pulling. i need one of those gentle walker harnesses.

she is PRETTY weird about stairs. i don't really get it. she does not like to go up them. she goes down them though. maybe she's never seen stairs before? hopefully she'll get over it. when she comes in from being let out she walks up the first flight and i have to carry her up the next two. no amount of pulling, coaxing, or milkbones will do it. but once we get to my door she runs in so i don't really get it. hopefully we'll get over that.

no accidents in the house yet. b ut i also don't know if she has pooped today. she's peed twice since i've had her.

just gave her some of her meds. i thought i had peanut butter - FAIL - i did not. tried to put in a piece of cheese but she was too smart for that trick so i had to just drop them down her throat. i looked for the greenie pill pocket things at petsmart but couldn't find. i got them for my cats at my vet so maybe i will check there.

no name yet!! she is pretty sweet and knows "sit" already and doesn't mind being in my room at all. she has a bone that she has been working on and some chew sticks and a couple of little toys i picked up. and a bed. and hopefully after she has been here awhile she'll warm up to me more and know that like, this is her home and i'm a nice person. she isn't like skittish or mean or anything, i think she is just super confused about what is going on!!!

gentle leader! i had a dog that pulled, and could slip out of a collar AND harness, and the gentle leader worked wonders!

gizmo went to the ex but he still uses the gentle leader for walks. gizmo jumped on people when they walked in the door. we ignored him until he calmed down and sat. no touch, no talk, no eye contact, as cesar would say. then lots of praise when he sat. if he got too jumpy at first we would push him down, but that would be a last resort.

dont know where that came from, i was meaning to type out the stair story, lol. he hated stairs, but eventually got used to them. it just took a lot of practice.

my new doggy hasn't jumped yet or barked and she knows sit (or she is tricking me into thinking she does cause she does it for a cookie!)

however she is pully (like a puppy) on a leash. not overly pully. and she isn't always pulling. sometimes she is not walking at all and really wants to sniff a spot and i can't get her to move.

but this is just day 1! i'm not like overly paranoid i just want to do things right the first time!
