Also, Chevy Chase was only on for one season, so he really doesn't deserve to be on this list.

this. i guess it's a pretty common misconception that he wasn't. i just remembered him being in a bunch of pretty funny skits and kind of assumed he was on one of the early casts.

With available choices like Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd, Chevy Chase, Eddie Murphy, Jon Belushi, Jane Curtin, Lovitz and Hartman how the fuck can you people even begin to mention Chris Farley, Jimmy Fallon, Will Ferrell or for Christ's sake Chris-if-he's-so-funny-where-is-he-now-Kattan. What the hell is wrong with you.

You guys need to watch some old SNL and see what it was like when it was actually funny.

i've never found him to be terribly funny in many of his movies, but some of his stand up material is pretty great. he's always pretty funny whenever he's on letterman too. guys like dana carvey and martin short are sort of the same way. they perform far better when they're out on their own doing stand up or during an interview than they do on film. they're kind of comedians' comedians.

I feel longevity is important. Would you consider J.J. Hickson to be one of the greatest NC State players?

That's a fucking silly comparison

Chevy Chase owned SNL

OWNED IT

JJ Hickson had a good season

He did not do to NC State basketball what Chevy Chase did to SNL

He actually did the exact opposite

Your rebuttal is valid. I would still like to hear a standardized list of qualities on which everyone is creating their list.

Chevy Chase: 1975-1976. That would be one season. If you really liked SNL and/or Chevy Chase, you would know that he stated leaving SNL was "the greatest career mistake [he] ever made".

I don't see how that's at all relevant to the comedic mastery he displayed while a cast member

i was asked earlier by Rat Soup if i liked this phil hartman skit:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isFf3t_4Zbk

annnnddd.....[NO]

not funny. just not my cup of tea.

i'm holding true to my vote for farley and ferrell.

and, i'm not going to give a reason why i think those two are funnier than hartman, because its all personal opinion. that could be the reason that snl was so popular, they combined chunks of comedy. some chunks i like, some chunks you like---

Tracy Morgan and Phil Hartman would round out my top 5

dana carvey had some stand up show from like 15 years ago that was awesome. about a year ago i saw another one that he did recently, and it started out really shitty and not funny. a few minutes into it it was like someone flipped a switch, and he immediately became hysterical.

Wasn't there a chick named Gilda Radner or something like that? I remember her being hysterical, too

idk, whenever I think SNL I think of:

SPROCKETS (and the kid Mike Myers played)
church lady
Chippendale's
We are 2 wild and craaaaaaaaazy guys!!

and then various parts that I remember Phil Hartman doing.. love him
