"Among developed countries the US rates 29th in infant mortality and 41 in maternal mortality. It's actually quite scary when you think about it."

That is a flat out lie. The other developed countries do not even count premature births as infants, so they don't factor into the "infant mortality" statistics. If you normalized the statistics for premature births (which the USA is phenomenal - unbelievably so), then you would see that US is far and above the quality of maternal care than any other country.

I think I posted earlier that I was terrified of an episiotomy. I read everything I could get my hands on about avoiding one.

Kitty B, you'll get your epidural. Most women have plenty of time with their first baby. And boy do they work. With my C-section, I was so profoundly numb that I chattered away with a nurse about where we went on our honeymoon while the doc cut Silas out. I didn't even know he'd been delivered until I heard him cry.

--

^Even critics of how the statistics are counted agree that the counting vs. not counting of the premature births alone is not enough to account for the high infant mortality rate. And you're just flat out ignoring the maternal mortality rate.

There is NO REASON for a supposedly healthy country to have so many C-sections and maternal deaths.

Soooo much ignorance in this thread. For example:

Quote :
"It's a trade off, and you can almost always find a way to do it the way you want. Without googling a bunch of statistics, I'd be willing to bet that there are fewer injuries, deaths, etc. with modern birthing methods than with "natural" childbirth."

Do your research and you'll find you are wrong. Medical intervention can be good if the baby is at risk, but "modern" methods such as C-section are putting mothers at undue risk and increasing the maternal death rate over natural methods. Ina May Gaskin was just on NPR this week talking about this exact subject. Perhaps you should start doing some research before making claims on a subject you obviously know nothing about.

it is obvious some people shouldn't have kids, and i hope they never do, such as Kurtis636 and that khcadwal chick, and maybe some others from this thread that i can't remember.

funny/sad how people who know not much about a topic will come in to a thread and start acting like they are experts.

Eh, I should have known better to try to have a rational discussion on TWW, much less in chit chat. When you have the likes of billytalent totally misrepresenting what I said (did I even mention my wife or any anecdotal evidence? And if you must know it's exactly 2 kids, but again I wasn't using my experience as evidence), there's no point in even trying to discuss something serious here. Next I'm sure mootduff or some other alias is going to come in and add something really useful to this thread too.

But since I'm already here and posting, I'll add a few things.

First, I don't care if you care about me or not, but read what the World Health Organization says about birth:

http://www.bellybelly.com.au/articles/birth/recommendations-for-birth-from-the-world-health-organisation

Basically it goes against everything birth has become in the US. There are hospitals in some areas where C-section rates are over 30%. There is a reason why OBs tend to have the highest malpractice rates of any medical profession, because we have medicalized a non-medical condition. Do some research on the problems that come from the any of the routine interventions during normal childbirth. There is no reason a healthy woman with a healthy baby should be strapped to a bed with an IV in her arm and a fetal monitor stuck to her stomach.

You have been gone a long time, Opstand. You will find some of the most judgmental, closed-minded, ignorant, xenophobic, and i-am-an-expert-even-in-domains-i-have-no-experience-in people here as of late. It is quite sad, actually.
