I don't want to drink or eat anything that I have to "acquire" a taste for. That's just ridiculous.

I drink liquor. It tastes great.

The 9% alcohol content helps, too.

I haven't tried any of the Chimays yet... I think they're part of the pricey line up if I remember correctly. And Red Oak is a great beer.

Haven't seen Big Boss Bad Penny Brown Ale mentioned in this thread...One of my favorite local beers. I was hooked on Cottonwood Low Down Brown by Carolina Beer Co. before I stumbled upon Bad Penny.

Bad Penny is one of my favorites. Be sure to try their seasonal brews too. Right now, it's Aces & Ates, an 8% coffee stout. You might can still find some Harvest Time around in stores, I was able to pick some up last night at Peace Street.

Has anyone tried Sam Adams Utopia? Obviously pricey, but I'm intrigued. Thinking about getting it as a present for my Dad.

Also, what's the best Beer place near campus (i.e., not a gas station)? Want to get a gift certificate for my brother to a place like Total Wine (yes, I've googled and know where it is) - wasn't sure if there's a better place closer to campus.

^Peace St Market has a great selection, but I don't know if you could get a gift certificate there.

^Best New Belgium Beer I've had so far. Fat Tire and Mothership are "meh"...although I do like the 1554. But the 2 Below is pretty damn good.

Theres a reason all the macro-brews can only advertise on being cold/drinkable/etc, the point isn't to like the taste, its to get drunk quick/cheap. I understand wanting watered down beer with no flavor under certain circumstances, like a hot day tailgating etc. But, drinking GOOD beer with actual flavor with the point of enjoying it requires and education on beer flavor to find what you like and don't like. Just because YOU don't like a Hefe (shotgun betty) or Belgian ale (Hells Belle) does not make them bad beers. Lonerider ( I work there by the way ) as a production microbrewery is limited in the styles they can release to the public but we are opening an tasting room where we can have more diverse styles. If you want a LOCAL light lager in your bar down the street don't count on it, there are a dozen reasons you will never see that, some marketing, some financial. I do foresee us (Lonerider) having both bolder beers (barleywine, IPA, Imperial styles, etc) along with milder beers (Pils, Helles, etc) in limited release at the brewery only.

I dunno if plugs are allowed but Lonerider has tours every other week at the brewery, the schedule is on loneriderbeer.com. Right now they are free and you get to try all the beers. I dunno if the owners will keep it that way forever. The Big Boss tour used to be free too.

^Lets go do some tours then, buddy. I've wanted to tour Big Boss for a while, and Lonerider would be a good one too.

I have no opinion on Shotgun Betty since I haven't had it, but Hells Belle does kind of suck...it's got way too much funk/yeasty flavor, even for the style. Also I think the name is misleading since it's not a helles lager.

This time of year, I'm always in the mood for a Backwoods Bastard:

I am truly a beer snob, and yes, I enjoy beer for the taste.

My current faves are: Chimay (Blue), Ommegang Three Philosophers, North Coast's Brother Thelonious, and Maredsous 10.

I sense a pattern...

Big Boss has a coffee stout out now? I'll have to try that. I'm not such a big fan of their Bad Penny brown, but I like Angry Angel (kolsch) and Harvest Time (fall/pumpkin seasonal). I think Shotgun Betty is pretty good too, though it's the only Lonerider brew I've had.

Also +1 to the Chimay Blue. Probably one of my top 5 beers--love the stuff. The red and the white are good too, but the blue is the premium one.

I love coffee stouts. Just got my hands on a growler of this:

Fucking delicious. Don't usually like Terrapin, but the last two I've tried (strong stouts) have been awesome.
