Agreed. If you use vinaigrettes on your salad it's a lot easier. Not only are almost all vinaigrettes lower in calories than just about anything else on the shelf, but too much of it will make the salad unbearable. A little goes a long way with that stuff.

I prefer lots of dark leaves. I usually use either baby spinach, arugula, or a baby leaf mix. I'll add some feta or blue cheese for fat, some cranberries and sliced almonds, and some vinaigrette for taste. Last night I threw some chicken on top because I had been lifting a little.

i have already failed

truth - i didn't leave work until after 8pm yesterday. i got home and made a bloody mary to calm my nerves. it was 10:45pm before i realized i needed to eat dinner. at that point, cutting up all the veggies would have been a pain.

so i opted for a really low calorie asian stir-fry instead. i george-foreman'd an italian marinated chicken breast, sauteed some frozen asian stir-fry veggies, and tossed in a packet of soy sauce from the chinese place less than 400 calories. not too shabby.

but i'm still bummed i didn't eat my salad.

You must be buying some junk then. I highly recommend these even though they come in a plastic container rather than a bag: http://www.ebfarm.com/Products/Salad/SaladKits.aspx

you realize that for the cost of that kit (2 servings, maybe?), you can buy the ingredients and make 4 times that amount of salad, right? i prefer to buy the [fresh] ingredients myself, chop them myself, make a salad just as good as ^ that kind of kit, and save money.

[Edited on January 5, 2010 at 9:37 AM. Reason : except for, of course, when it's almost 11pm and i get lazy. most days aren't like yesterday though.]

I buy the big sized kit at Sam's Club. It's either $5.88 or $6.88 and it usually lasts me a week eating around 1 salad per day. I'm not really going to worry about whether my veggies cost me $7 per week or $4.50 per week. Your time has value too.

And, the kit I buy comes with feta cheese, cranberries, sliced almonds, and salad dressing. A little tub of feta cheese is like $4 if you had to buy it to use at home.

i'm interested in salads without all the excess calories from feta cheese and cranberries

show me a salad kit with iceberg/romaine, onion, red/yellow peppers, onions, alfalfa sprouts, carrot shreds, cucumbers, and sugar free salad dressing - and then we can talk

also, it doesn't take more than 15mins to cut up all the veggies and store the extras. i'm a whiz with a knife - i've been watching Food Network yo.

Your salad sounds gross.

And you don't have to use the cheese if you don't want to, however if you're eating this salad as a meal it's a good idea to get some fat in your diet.

A sprinkle of cranberries is not going to derail your goals.

I used to eat really poorly when I was in college. Hot pockets and Capri-Sun everyday for lunch, hardees for dinner and amore for my late night meals. I ate equally poorly from 4th grade through high school. As a result at this stage I pay less attention to calories and more attention to things such as salt and cholesterol. Those are the big killers anyways. We're such a looks focused culture that we forget what really matters in being healthy, and cholesterol is huge. Eating all that cheese everyday isn't good for you, just as eating a stick of butter isn't good for you.

I've never had any issues with high cholesterol, and during my last physical my doctor told me my results were the best shes seen in a long time. I'm happy with that.

My diet is healthy. I eat about 3000 calories a day, but its always between 3 - 5 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables, 3 - 5 servings of whole grains, 2 servings of meats and two of legumes. What is in my food is the responsible factor in keeping me healthy, not how much of it I eat.

Also, if you want to loose weight stop taking in liquid calories. Even zero calories soft drinks will slow your metabolism. Have some discipline and drink water or tea.

ya know, i figured they probably made a plastic knife for use on lettuce so that it doesn't get brown is that what that is?

i typically wash it and tear it apart by hand so it doesn't go brown

i see a lettuce knife in my future. along with a Chop and Scoop.

Sounds like something you would use instead of a pooper scooper for those REALLY big piles in the yard...

you're the only person i've seen to make such a claim. now if your statement was "taking in cholesterol isn't the only thing that increases overall cholesterol" that would be more accurate, because liver toxicity plays a large role as well. If you eat foods with cholesterol, then the cholesterol finds its way into your blood and if it all can't be removed it can actively build in your arteries.

hahahahahaah

it's a chopping board that is curved on the edges so that your veggies don't all slide off the side. and it's got a handle so you can easily lift it and slide the veggies off the end. it's actualy quite helpful when you're chopping lots of stuff! a girlfriend of mine got it at a bridal shower and i've wanted one ever since.

dietary cholesterol isn't associated with serum cholesterol, although, high cholesterol foods usually come with saturated fats, which do affect serum cholesterol

I guess it is one of those diets where they still make crap for you to eat, but they just pre-assign small portion sizes so that people lose weight... but they are still eating crap, though. And the company's wallet gets fatter and fatter!"

While Weight Watchers makes some prepackaged food, the use of the prepackaged food isn't necessary or really heavily endorsed. Because of the way points are calculated, the fat and calories in those desserts are probably off set by a high fiber content. The program actually pushes dieters away from prepackaged foods simply because they're not the best source of nutrition.

Weight Watchers is an extremely successful and healthy program that is very inexpensive. It's a basic program that asks dieters to set small short term weight loss goals. Dieters reach their goal by following a simple program that emphasizes healthy food choices, mindful foo preparation and eating, portion control, and an increase in activity level. The program works because it's based on the basics of weight loss and good health.

People have a great deal of long term success because it is not a crash diet and it encourages an entire lifestyle change in a manageable way. My grandmother is one example. She weighed over 250 lbs for much of her life. She started Weight Watchers in in her 60s and lost 100 lbs. She is now 90 years old and has kept her weight off for over 20 years after a life time of obesity.

you must be blind, because I've made that claim numerous times on this site. dietary cholesterol and blood cholesterol are very fairly independent of each other. If fact, I guarantee you that I could put you on a diet extremely high in cholesterol that would lower your total cholesterol while raising your HDL.

^5 Provide a link if you want any credibility at all.

Our liver produces the vast majority of serum cholesterol (85-90%), and the rest comes primarily from saturated fat in the diet that is converted into cholesterol during digestion. It's amazing how you conveniently forgot to highlight saturated fat in your quote. Our bodies are horribly efficient at converting the dietary cholesterol into the oxidized cholesterol in our blood, so this accounts for only a point or two on a cholesterol screening. For all intents and purposes, it's negilible.

The war we're currently waging on saturated fats is about as stupid as the war on cholesterol that was being waged in the 80s and 90s. Once the pharmaceutical companies have their chance to make all of their profits off of cholesterol lowering drugs, they'll admit that cholesterol is a symptom instead of the disease and move on to the real problems. Unfortunately, a lot of those problems are dietary problems with trans fats and too much grain in the typical american diet.
