Proper ways to handle this situation:

1. Wait until the other car goes by, then complete your pass.

2. Speed up to match the other car's speed, THEN change lanes, complete your pass, pull back into the right lane, and resume your previous speed.


Less than ideal, but at least not as bad as what you did:

1. Pull out in front of him like you did. He initially thinks you're going to impede his progress and gets irritated that you're being a fucking moron. He flashes his lights at you, but you speed up and match his speed. It's a little late in the game, because he's already taken his car off of cruise and maybe even applied his brakes, but at least you're making the best of things after you got off to a poor start.

because of how quickly I was approaching the car. I would have loved to do #2.

And I don't think you realize how crowded I-85 was that day. Had I stayed behind the guy, it would have taken me a few minutes to get by him. I saw an opening, and took it. The guy didn't like it and flashed his fucking beams, as if he had never done what I had done. So I then decided not to speed up.

And it's hilarious that you come into this thread high up on your pedestal.

if the guy in front of you is 3 below you and it would take you 2 minutes to pass him, you're going to go 1/10th of a mile less over those 2 minutes.

@60 MPH (probably well slower than you were going) you cover that 1/10 of a mile in 6 seconds.

It was the other guy who showed his ass. But whatever man. I can just envision you as one of those lane hopping douche bags who tailgates everyone who isn't going as fast as you would like them to go and who thinks that everyone else is wrong except for you, with a driving record a mile long, riddled with speeding and wreckless driving tickets and maybe a few accidents. That's ok, you're just like my father. A reckless driver who feels that everyone is in his way with the maturity of a 5 year old behind the wheel.

let me tell you how much I love people camping out in the left lane going 65-70mph in the 3 lane (each way) 70mph zone of I-85 between Salisbury and Greensboro. I wonder what thought crosses their minds when I fly by them on the right going 83 or so with the cruise set.

As I asked earlier, so I'll ask it again:

At what point is enough space enough? It was fucking I-85 and relatively high traffic. Do I go at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, ect car lengths?

So how many car lengths are enough? You can easily make the argument that anyone who is in the left lane who is going slower than another person is "interrupting his right of way."

Just because you feel the need to go faster than everyone else, doesn't mean that everyone has to yield to you.

No, goddammit, he was cruising along minding his own business, and you pulled out in front of him. No shit he wasn't pleased with that and flashed his lights. Then, after fucking up by pulling out in front of him, you willfully threw a little temper tantrum because he flashed his lights, and refused to match speed.


and no, I don't care how fast or slow people are going as long as they're in the right lane(s). I have no tolerance for people driving in the left lane (again, regardless of how fast they're going) unless they're in the immediate act of passing someone.

but this isn't about your choice of lanes so much as it's about your choice to pull out in front of people, then fuck it away even further by making a conscious decision not to help the situation out by speeding up and matching the speed of the traffic you just cut off.

Yes, but the burden is on YOU in this situation to be the one who fucking waits a few seconds. You can't just go pulling out in front of people and impeding traffic, then complain that THEY'RE pissed about you doing it.

It's not even as much about the 20-seconds of his life you wasted as much as it's the fact that you pulled out in front of him and expected HIM to alter his profile to avoid a collision.

I'm curious how passing someone with a speed delta of 10mph is reckless? And if you're considering it reckless b/c I'm passing on the right, the blame lies with person camping out in the left lane and not me.

NO, DAMMIT, NO.

It doesn't matter if you're going 175 in a 65. The left lane is for passing, then get back into the right lane.

(Obviously you shouldn't be doing 175 in traffic, but the point is that the left lane is for PASSING, no matter how much above or below the speed limit you're going. If you're in the left lane doing 90 in a 65, but not passing, you're wrong. Maybe I want to go 91. Conversely, if you're in the left lane doing 60 in a 65, but passing a car on the right going slower, that's fine. I will patiently wait as long as you are indeed passing someone.)
