Fuck arsenal
5/9/2013 11:17:51 AM
Rooney is world class on his day. Cleverley was an embarrassment to start for an England team.** Arsenal just makes the most sense for me. More than West Ham. Arsenal, since I watched the EPL has tons of money in a huge market but act cheap as fuck, never win anything and get rid of their best players. They are the English soccer version of the Mets. to me this David Moyes announcement came slightly out of nowhere.but he's done an outstanding job at Everton, and Sir Alex's recommendation counts for a lot. SAF isn't going to endorse anybody without a ferocious desire to win, superb managerial skills on both the personnel and footballing fronts, and big balls.I'm a Liverpool fan, but I see Manchester United as sort of the international representatives of the English game. It would be sad to see them decline into mediocrity after SAF's departure. But I trust Fergie's judgment, and mostly on that grounds, I suspect all you United fans will be a-okay.also, cue a general collapse of Everton

I'm largely going by what I've gleaned off pundits/commentators w/ regard to Moyes' job at Everton, admittedly. But he's built himself a quality side and I think his achievement is tolerably impressive, particularly in light of the small purse he's always had to work with. It would've been a big ask for Everton to seriously compete for a top 4 place, but they've consistently finished 5-7. And Moyes is leaving a pretty damned good team behind him.agree to disagree on the Man U front...I am somewhat soft-hearted, even in footballing matters. I've never hated John Terry, for example, and felt bad for him when he missed that penalty and cried. [Edited on May 9, 2013 at 1:30 PM. Reason : ieworpg]

^^ty, kind sir^maybe so (I'm not too familiar with the Hodgson-at-Fulham story.) But it looks like under Hodgson Fulham dodged relegation, then finished 7th, then finished 12th. They did reach the finals of the Europa League, but who gives a shit? They had nothing like the consistency Everton which have enjoyed under Moyes. Moyes had a much longer tenure at Everton, but his record and accomplishments were considerably more impressive, for me.Also, SAF did not confidently recommend Roy Hodgson for the United job. I'm taking Moyes performance and Fergie's recommendation in tandem.]
5/9/2013 2:18:02 PM
I was talking about your "quality side" comment under a budget. Hodgson took over a team that was awful, kept them up, made some of his own buys, took them to 7th and a Europa League final (plenty of people care and it's something Moyes has never done)Look, Moyes may work out just fine and be another United legend. But Ferguson is a proven soccer manager, not a proven recommender of soccer managers and this hire is risky as fuck. Especially since one of the best coaches in the world is available right now.

Win a league title/two CL semifinals and you're a "bust?" Tough crowd.

Maybe the ManU job will open back up after Mourinho is canned by Chelsea a second time.
5/9/2013 3:41:34 PM
^^AgreeUnited have only been really successful for 2 periods of time. And both of them under Scottish managers with a tendency of having a team with mostly British players. And we've never hired a non-British manager in 135 years. I can see why Moyes was hired. And it was unanimous. Maybe the Board does know what they're doing.[Edited on May 9, 2013 at 3:46 PM. ^^^The Real Madrid faithful are the toughest crowd in soccer. And one league title, one (possibly two) Copa del Reyes, and zero Champions League finals in 3 years does amount to a bit of a bust, when you've got the players and expectations that go with the Real Madrid job, and with being Jose Mourinho to boot. And yeah, if he came right of the blocks and starting kicking ass at Man U, surely nobody affiliated with the club would complain. But I can very easily see him instituting broad changes from day one which, if results didn't follow, would generally piss off club and fanbase. It just seems a bad idea to step into Sir Alex's shoes and immediately start walking around like you own the place, which is probably exactly what Jose Mourinho would do.Given the choice of Moyes and Mourinho, I'd do a bit more research and then probably take Moyes. We'll never know, which is kind of too bad...it would have been very, very interesting to watch, at any rate.]

Yeah, undoubtedly if it's just a question of trophies then Mourinho is by far the most qualified candidate. It's just that people (justifiably or not) are questioning his aptness for this particular job. But you may be right and they may be wrong. It's a polarizing question all over the world of football right now, I imagine.Good call on the Moyes love...you obviously know more about the dude than I do. Anyhow, it'll be fascinating to see how he performs under this pressure: whether he steps up or collapses. Ribs said

Put it this way. I feel like United fans would be hating on the move if Chelsea, City, or Arsenal made it.Ignoring the Everton connection, I would have loved to get Moyes at Liverpool so I clearly think he's a good coach.
5/9/2013 4:26:03 PM
^I would say its a hire similar to Rodgers. Unproven entity with high upside

The two Daves have a huge task on their hands: Dave Moyes and Dave Doeren[Edited on May 9, 2013 at 5:41 PM. Reason : There is a parallel to their careers...]

Moyes' biggest knocks are the away record against PL opponents and his style of football. But good managers can adapt. The Everton squad isn't exactly filled with people that have exceptional ball control. Moyes chose to play that way because maybe that's what his team would be best at. He has got two squads at United that are better than what he had at Everton. I think its a good hire. Especially because if Moyes is good then he will be around for a while. I think 2 titles and 1 cup will be a good return in his first 6 years.

St James the last matchday when Newcastle will most likely be ridiculously desperate for points will be a big challenge for them assuming Spurs can get the 3 tomorrowWinning tomorrow, having Arsenal draw/lose to regain position, and then losing at home to Sunderland the last matchday to fall out would be the most Spurs thing ever though
5/11/2013 10:33:15 AM
It would be so Wigan of them to win the FA Cup and then get relegated.

Tough to get 3 at Stoke but I'd be surprised if Spurs didnt go 6 for 6.Who ya got today? Man City 3-1 here.
