apparently some vegetarians believe they are better than people who eat meat and will be able to live more years of their lives worrying about animals.[Edited on March 26, 2009 at 2:13 PM. Reason : .]

ugh. so many people who squeal about organic food have never even tried growing a plant. the reason people use pesticides is that there are things in the soil that will kill the plants or make the crop inedible. when crop failure like that occurs on a mass scale, it typically leads to famine and social meltdown. Furthermore, there are things in the soil which, if they become established in the crop, can make you very sick. glyphosphate is wildly popular because you cant weed fields of beans or cereals effectively at all, and some of the weeds which can be intermixed can be very harmful to your health if they are mixed in with the product at harvest. a lot of farming is done on land that isnt necessarily completely ideal. this requires soil supplementation that is difficult to achieve and maintain through strictly organic means, and selection of crops that have been bred (through traditional means or transformation) to thrive in those conditions. obviously farmers want to use all the organic fertilizers they can, because they are often available free or at low cost as compared to chemical fertilizers, but the demand outstrips the supply. likewise, no farmer wants to be causing water pollution via runoff because that means the fertilizer he paid for is being wasted, and they take preventative measures if they are smart businessmen. people that are scared of transformed organisms just dont know how relatively innocuous it is and how frequently it occurs to us and in history. every virus you get transforms your cells. ever had a wart? chances are you still have plenty of cells in the general area which are transformed. in the unbelievably rare (it hasnt happened yet) event that an insidious or toxic gene product is formed by transformation of a crop, we will know fairly immediately, and well before it gets into commercial production. plant toxins aren't subtle, and crop quality is constantly monitored to make sure it is still up to the standards people expect from their food. finally, organic farming is useless on a mass scale if it can only be profitably done in certain isolated areas defined by the absence of pervasive pests which make growing the crop organically impossible elsewhere. it is definitely worse for the environment as a whole for you to eat an organically farmed apple from a huge farm on the west coast that was shipped in a refrigerated truck than one grown in NC but sprayed for black spot, and certainly more land was polluted by the gasoline it took to transport the organic apples. if you really want to make an impact, buy stuff from small, local farms and dont worry so much about what they put on it before you get it. just wash it thoroughly and you`ll be doing the environment and the local economy a tremendous favor.
