There was a plantation slave economy in the NC Piedmont...wait what? You may want to read a bit more about NC history. Northeast NC was the only region of NC with a real plantation economy, due to proximity to tidewater VA. Beyond that, there were a fair number of plantations along the coastal and coastal plain region. The Piedmont and Mountains had hardly any (Piedmont was mostly small family farms).

It's worth noting that the clear majority of whites even in plantation economies did not own slaves, and the overwhelming majority of slave owners owned less than 5 (so I don't doubt that your ancestors did not own them).

hmm. well, shit. that's opposite from what i remembered reading, but hell if i can argue with that map.

i've got to admit, i did some good research into civil war and genealogy, but havent really touched it in the past 10 years. i've been out on the west coast now for over 6 years, so it's gotten kind of fuzzy.

thanks for setting me straight. better to look like a fool here, than go spouting backwards shit IRL in front of some professor or something.
