If you have a dog with three legs you get the gimp sympathy factor going on. But it has to be a cute gimpy dog, not one of these:

yeah, its mostly due to his coloring and leanness that he gets that a lot. Most rat terriers have shorter legs and have more white in the their coat. He is a lanky, black and tan. So we named him Guinness.

^^They're definitely awesome little dogs. Almost Home (the daschund rescue) is very active in the area - you shouldn't have any problems getting one. Mine originally came from a breeder but the family that bought him couldn't handle him as they had ~7 other dogs + kids in the house. They're a spirited, intelligent breed and a lot of people give them away because they struggle with getting the animal disciplined. They're like any other dog really, it's all about patience and consistency. My dachshund was 1.5 y/o when I got him but from a disciplinary standpoint he was a puppy, the family that had him gave him 0 structure, he basically did whatever the hell he wanted, never even had to walk on a leash because they lived out in the middle of nowhere. I've had the monster a little less than 6 months and he's totally house broken, crate trained, knows a few tricks and can even be trusted off-leash for short distances (walking from the house to the car, or just hanging out in the yard/on the patio.) but yeah, dachshunds, get on board.[Edited on March 30, 2010 at 10:34 PM.
