"because we all know that would work given how close the vote was, it's just your own exceedingly narrow interpretation of the constitution that precludes health care reform."

1. I wasn't talking about just to get a healthcare bill passed...I'm talking in general.

2. You're still wrong. Just because you can't get what you want by doing it the right way doesn't entitle you to ignore the law.

Quote :
"i get that. but what about people that have breaks in insurance coverage? from getting laid off, etc?
"

That did legitimately need to be fixed.

This wasn't the way to do it.

Quote :
"the problem with free healthcare in this shitty overweight country is that its gonna suck us dry!!"

Fortunately, this bill has nothing to do with "free" healthcare, other than maybe being a move down that slippery slope.

Quote :
"what? you mean people shouldn't make money off the pain and sickness of others? I find your views shocking and appalling."

Hospitals don't make money off the pain and sickness of others, you goddamn dunce. They make money off of alleviating that pain and suffering.

and the alternative to them being a business is not pretty.

Quote :
"An MRI costs $90 in Japan, here it runs around $1200...obviously we were doing something right."

You realize that the fiscal conservatives' approach was to attack healthcare costs, but the Dems want nothing to do with that? What does this bill do to address the $1200 MRI, not to mention the fact that they give you one if you stub your little toe?

Quote :
"As soon as health care passes, the American people will see immediate benefits. The legislation will:

* Prohibit pre-existing condition exclusions for children in all new plans;
* Provide immediate access to insurance for uninsured Americans who are uninsured because of a pre-existing condition through a temporary high-risk pool;
* Prohibit dropping people from coverage when they get sick in all individual plans;
* Lower seniors prescription drug prices by beginning to close the donut hole;
* Offer tax credits to small businesses to purchase coverage;
* Eliminate lifetime limits and restrictive annual limits on benefits in all plans;
* Require plans to cover an enrollee’s dependent children until age 26;
* Require new plans to cover preventive services and immunizations without cost-sharing;
* Ensure consumers have access to an effective internal and external appeals process to appeal new insurance plan decisions;
* Require premium rebates to enrollees from insurers with high administrative expenditures and require public disclosure of the percent of premiums applied to overhead costs.
* By enacting these provisions right away, and others over time, we will be able to lower costs for everyone and give all Americans and small businesses more control over their health care choices."

No more insurance gaps for a lot of young adults between high school, college, and first job/probationary period at said job.

I'm repeating this point, it is one of my favorite parts of the reform, because I had friends who ended up in the ER while waiting for their insurance to kick in at my old job (in grad school now) and one in particular still has paid back the hospital and probably wont for many many years if ever.

hospitals actually don't make money

well a lot of them don't

i don't know what the alternative to a business is but what is happening now isn't working. i mean, i can't blame the "business" model necessarily but that is what people call what it is now and it doesn't work. at least not well enough. in my opinion.

a good % of the hospitals in the us are losing money. for lots of reasons. insurance/uninsured people, medicare, medicaid, etc, etc.

not that this has too much relevance. i just threw it out there haha

Perhaps it's a bit ironic that this bill is a metaphor for everything wrong with our healthcare system as it is. It attempts to treat the symptoms and while ignoring the underlying causes of the problem.

sure they do, and the alternative to them being a business has been proven time and again to be superior to our way of doing things if you bother to investigate.

I'm just glad they made some progress instead of just pushing this thing back again and again. Now the administration miight be able to move on to another issue. I think Obama's pride was driving him to get some kind of healthcare legislation no matter what.

Ummm, how? I'm for abiding by the proper framework for government. I think you'll have a hard time pinning any blame on me for that.

Quote :
"you and your ilk would argue that until the end of time just to prevent anything from ever being done.
"

My ilk?

I'm assuming that you've mistaken me for a Republican or something. They're not "my ilk". I tear into them plenty, too.

and yes, "This is fucked up and stupid" is a pretty legitimate argument, a legitimate retort to which is not "Well, we've gotta do SOMETHING, and do it NOW!".

Quote :
"sure they do, and the alternative to them being a business has been proven time and again to be superior to our way of doing things if you bother to investigate. "

1. Humor me...how do hospitals make money off of pain and suffering rather than alleviating that pain and suffering?

2. Superior, huh? I guess that's why Americans go to Canada for healthcare, not the other way around.

Incidentally, Americans do sometimes go to other countries like, for example, India...but that's to save money. If you recall, my overall point is that should've been addressing the cost of healthcare, not the health insurance.

Quote :

tort reform is a part of it, but not itself a solution.

that could be a whole other thread, but the 10-second answer is that it's the idea of addressing the problem with people suing the bejeezus out of everyone for stupid shit.

Sarah Palin just recently admitted going to Canada for healthcare when she was younger, nobody is going to go there for elective surgery obviously

Quote :
"tort reform is a part of it, but not itself a solution."

It's a VERY, VERY SMALL part of it, but that's the only marginally substantive idea for reducing costs that Republicans proposed

Quote :
"what is tort reform?"

It basically involves capping punitive damages awarded to plaintiffs in medical malpractice lawsuits. It's an overblown issue that would only reduce costs by a maximum of 2% accord to the GAO.

There's a little more to tort reform than that.

I'm also not much on defending the GOP.

and any argument using something that Sarah Palin did is fundamentally flawed. She is one of the most goddamn ridiculous and retarded figures in government in America. That's like saying someone is one of the most incompetent and difficult employees at the DMV.

^ It's not only the costs of the lawsuits...it's the crazy costs of malpractice insurance, and the overtreatment of things as a result of being scared of getting sued (i.e., a contributing factor towards damn near getting a brain scan because you broke a nail).

but no, while it would be a step in the right direction, it certainly wouldn't be some magic bullet that would solve all of our problems.
