maybe he was confident that there wasn't one in the chamber[Edited on January 21, 2013 at 5:12 PM. Reason : t]

Maybe he was Harry Potter and it was a chamber of secrets.

1. Treat every weapon as if it were loaded.2. Never point a weapon at anything you do not intend to shoot.3. Keep your weapon on safe until you are ready to fire.4. Keep you finger straight and off the trigger until you intend to fire.I was gonna bold the ones he violated, but my guess is all of them. Even if the shotgun didn't have a safety and the trigger was released by accidentally snagging on something, we're still talking about violating half of the cardinal rules. That anyone mistakenly thought the chamber was clear, or was dumb enough to knowingly have it loaded in that setting, is beside the point and just icing on the cake of stupidity. You don't have to be Annie fucking Oakley to abide by those four rules and safely handle even a loaded and chambered gun. I suspect that most of us have been doing it without incident since we were, like, 12.[Edited on January 21, 2013 at 9:08 PM. Reason : also, get fucked settledown. the schtick is old.]

It just reiterates the point that shootings and massacres are just the price we pay for freedom.Freedom isn't free.

I'm willing to bet this guy was no less careful than your average gun owner

This is nothing more than a serious case of negligence, albeit a rare one considering the number of firearms brought into gun shows across the country in any given year versus the number of accidental discharges. You can be certain that the folks injured will be courted by a host of attorneys and the guy who brought the shotgun into the show may well be working for the victims for many years.

^ consider everyone else at the show that managed to NOT shoot something/someone and you have your answer.

These guys are the only ones not following basic gun safety?Managing to not fuck something up is not evidence of having all the 'Day 1 stuff' down.]

They're massively outlying in my experience, but I can only speak from the "sample" that I've had exposure to.There are certainly plenty of gun owners out there who have not the slightest clue what they're doing, but they rarely handle a gun (which, in turn, is largely why they're so bad)...but they don't fuck that much up, I think, again because, well, they're almost never ham-handedly finger-fucking a gun.Anecdotes, and weak ones at that, but that's my observation of 2-2.5 decades of shooting and being exposed to firearms.

theDuke866, you are right. Negligent discharge would be the more appropriate term. I have been to many, many gun shows and never encountered one and I would love to see some data on firearms brought into gun shows nationwide and the number of those that are discharged. I would also like to see the odds of being injured at a gun show versus other public events commonly held across the country.
1/22/2013 12:42:02 AM
Yeah, I'd guess its not as bad as a couple of days ago would lead you to believe, but I don't know--I have never even been to a gun show.
1/22/2013 1:49:09 AM
three separate incidents in a weekend is probably more than normal, but guns show shootings aren't rare based on a quick perusal of google news results for 'gun show accidental shot' prior to january 18, 2013.]

^ you're retarded. gun safety's foundation is being NOT CONFIDENT. You check your chamber even when you know it is empty, you do a brass check just to make sure it is loaded. You triple check everything, and then triple check again. It is part of training and part of owning a gun.
1/23/2013 10:53:16 AM
while any negligent discharge isn't acceptable; it's not really much of a problem. Doctors negligently kill more people each year than negligent discharges.
1/23/2013 12:23:22 PM
^^ it's easy to say that, but most people don't practice it. in fact, I'm pretty certain there is a story Fumbler would be embarrassed for TWW to learn, and he rolls around with one in the chamber at all times.

I'm surprised after 5 incidents of negligent discharges leading to injury no one has made a Dick Cheney remark, especially since the Raleigh incident involved bird shot. Also, the thing I keep wondering is whether these incidents would have happened if not for the current political climate over gun control. Basically, it's a hot button issue right now, which drives attendance at gun shows into record numbers. The more people at gun shows, the higher the likelihood of an incident like this happening. If the gun control issue was much cooler like it was during the show in May, would these negligent owners have even bothered to show up?
1/23/2013 12:34:30 PM
I have heard that incidents similar to this happened at two other gun shows around the country. (Although I havent found the evidence)coincidence?
