A word is a word by itself, it needs to be properly put into context and the intent and meaning would need to be quantified for the word to be properly identified. It's like in math, a variable X, what does it mean? by itself you can say it's a variable, some undefined term that represents something, but because you don't know where it came from or what it's suppose to represent, X could be explaining the relationship of Y or it could be part of a whole other equation for a different set of math problems.I find this whole event funny, embarrassing and actually makes me a bit angry. Funny in the sense that people over react to very stupid things and IMO it seems as though everyone in America has lost their balls and think everything is out to get them. Get off your high horse and worry about your own damn issues and problems in front of you. Embarrassing in the sense that people in my college would be stupid to do this and try move for a regulating free-expression tunnel with the risk of having the free-expression tunnel removed. I've been around NCSU for a long time and this was the only college that I sent my admissions for my undergrad; the tunnel has been around for a lot longer and has been one of those landmarks of the school. I mean it makes the AASAC and NCSU look like crying bitches whining to mommy and daddy.Angry in the sense that this group had the audacity and nerve to actually plan on blocking the tunnel and preventing students from getting place to place; specially if they didn't disband early this morning due to the chancellor's actions. I want to know who actually passed the permit for that organization to allow them to blockade the tunnel? Specially at night? Sure the campus is mostly safe, but I've walked around campus back in 04 when muggings held at gun point happened on main campus. Cops can't be everywhere and that main tunnel is well lite and provides a safe avenue for students to get between the two places, specially if some Asian students were coming come from the library to their dorms late last night. I'd be pissed. If I was on main campus at the time and had to get the class but was blocked by some cocksuckers because they got their feelings hurt, I would have recruited every Asian on campus and overrun their positions while we yell, "YOU AIN'T GOT SHIT ON CHARLIE NOW BITCHES" and probably some other quotes from an obscure jap anime that only 3 non-asian people in the US saw.[Edited on November 5, 2010 at 3:07 AM. well for the black students people scrawling "nigger" on the walls counts as their "own damn issues and problems"and when people put up graffiti like this it makes the school look like it is attended by a bunch of bigoted fucking retards - it really tarnishes the school's image and detracts from the reputation of the institution (which impacts current students and alumni)I think an appropriate response would be to meet graffiti with graffiti, howeverbroadcast your own message of tolerance and indicate that you will not be swayed by bigotry and hate

There is an old punk song, it says America stands for freedom...
11/5/2010 3:21:09 AM
I agree with you that the graffiti was distasteful, but honestly, I'm sick and tired of hearing racism shit and people joining the band wagon. Sure the whole Black vs. White thing is still a tender subject and as I tell everyone, the shit between Chinese and Japanese has been going on for a much longer period of time and still a big issue. I grew up in Japan and having Japanese people spit on you in public was common (I'm Chinese). I'm a racist in the fact that I hate on everyone equally and if you are so removed to do action about something stupid on a wall and want to protest it, get some paint, turn that penis into some other form of artwork and make a light situation of it. Like you said, spread the message of tolerance and that you won't be swayed by this stupid shit.I will shit a brick if they remove the free-expression tunnel.

11/5/2010 10:08:37 AM
^^In and of itself, someone telling another how to react to potentially offensive albeit free speech has nothing to do with race.Introducing it, or acting as though is should be introduced, is 100% unnecessary. In fact, insisting that the race of the 2 people in the conversation needs to be considered, is unsupportable and racist.A black person telling another black person how to react to potentially offensive albeit free speech.... A white person telling a black person how to react to potentially offensive albeit free speech.... A black person telling a white person how to react to potentially offensive albeit free speech.... A white person telling another white person how to react to potentially offensive albeit free speech.... equalsA person telling another person how to react to potentially offensive albeit free speech. It's really not that hard. Apparently, you think that white people are somehow not qualified to tell a black person how to react to potentially offensive albeit free speech. Is that what you think? If so, why? How can you possibly suggest that and maintain that it's not racist? Really dude.

11/5/2010 10:12:17 AM

Racial slurs in general, in a class-based society where race is overwhelmingly correlated with race (like ours), especially due to a history of systemic oppression (like ours), objectify the power relations present in that history (and present). You said a minute ago that skin shouldn't matter. The skin is just the marker; it's arbitrary, of course, and treating it as arbitrary is what allows you to fallaciously generalize like you did a moment ago ("people telling people how to react . . ."). It has nothing to do with skin, really. It has to do with being part of a group that has been (and continues to be) put down in various ways due to racism (though things are improving).Calling somebody a cracker or a honky is basically pointing out to them that they are in the societally dominant position. It's not a very effective insult. Calling somebody a nigger is pointing out to them that they come from a family of people who were enslaved for generations, who continue to be ridiculed by others, and who face a stacked deck in a society with an already startlingly low amount of social mobility. Calling somebody a nigger is also often a precursor to some sort of violent action, and in many cases, is intended to point out that history of violence and oppression in order to make the person uncomfortable, angry, whatever (in any case, decrease their utility sharply).Again, nothing to do with skin like you're trying to pretend. It has everything to do with membership in a particular social demographic, one that shares certain power relations to others and certain historical relations. Pointing out, glorifying, or rubbing past atrocities and inequalities in their face now is unbelievably vicious, callous, unthinking, or any combination thereof. This is exactly why it's ridiculous for people in a privileged class to tell people in marginalized classes how to react to harsh reminders of this inequality. You really have no basis of comparison here, you only have the option to stay quiet and listen to the perspective of people who have experiences you don't. As a white person, calling somebody a nigger is basically saying "in case you forgot, I am in a superior position to you." Whether this is pointing to irrational, arbitrary ideas of racial superiority or to the actual social situation is irrelevant, neither is coming from a good place. It's re-asserting that old power relationship, and basically makes you look like someone who endorses it because you approach "nigger" as a valid insult with meaning.
11/5/2010 10:29:10 AM
So what does it mean when black people call other black people nigger?
11/5/2010 10:32:20 AM
^Or non whites?
11/5/2010 10:32:44 AM
haha look at all that bullshit you posted... (you racist)
11/5/2010 10:34:59 AM
From what I can tell, black people calling other black people "niggers" either has a friendly connotation (taking the word back) or an unfriendly one, which is predicated on precisely the same sort of crap I mentioned in my post above. If you want to define me into becoming a racist based on some really uninteresting semantic argument, then you'll render yourself just like every other internet libertarian. Let me guess: I acknowledge historical and political differences between racial groups, and that there is such a thing as white privilege and social momentum. This makes me a "racist".[Edited on November 5, 2010 at 10:36 AM. Reason : .]
11/5/2010 10:35:04 AM
So can non-blacks not use it in a friendly connotation?
11/5/2010 10:35:56 AM
That's not for me to decide now, is it? I've already admitted I can't even properly understand what it's like to be called that, so I just don't say it.[Edited on November 5, 2010 at 10:37 AM. Reason : .]
11/5/2010 10:36:36 AM
on the stance of saying "nigga":I was told once to not say it during my rendition of Pussy Control (by the white DJ).... so as an improvisation, I went "BLEEEP" during that word and this group of black girls in the front literally said, "What?! Oh, hell no"They pulled me aside afterward and told me it was ok to say because it was Prince
11/5/2010 10:39:12 AM
Your story pretty much points out how ridiculous the whole thing is.If you don't give power to the word by reacting negatively to it, it's rendered an ineffective means of pissing people off.Think of the words that at the beginning of the 20th century were considered a high insult and now they're considered nothing at all.
11/5/2010 10:41:09 AM
It definitely would not surprise me if some ignorant douchebag from TWW started all of this crap in the free expression tunnel!
11/5/2010 11:20:54 AM
I fully support the blockade of the tunnel. Scrawling hate-speech on the walls is a big "Stay out of here by threat of violence" directed at blacks, with 300 years of lynchings, slavery, and truck-draggings to back it up. Until the blockaders actually attack someone trying to enter I'd say they're making a pretty poignant symbolic statementy mirroring the sentiment that's been directed at them. As usual, white people don't get it and shrug their shoulders in confusion, "Gosh it's just a word, don't be so uptight!"
11/5/2010 11:54:33 AM

11/5/2010 11:56:12 AM
^4 You're exactly right. Ever since then, even when people tell me I should probably "edit" the song, I never do. The only times I've ever had bad reactions were when I edited so I decided obviously people don't give a crap if I sing a song by Prince (because he's black and wrote the song and can obviously say the word)However, I wonder how well it would go over if I sang the Ben Folds rendition of "Bitches Ain't Shit" EXPERIMENT IN THE WORKS
