I once went to Gypsy's and the bitch of a waitress said our friend couldn't stay since they weren't ordering food.We said "fuck you" and rolled out. There were at least 5 of us who WERE going to order food, but our friend didn't have any money or wasn't hungry or something.[Edited on August 9, 2011 at 11:56 PM. Reason : we tip well too]
8/9/2011 11:55:17 PM
That's because Gypsy Shiny Diner is awesome serves awesome food you plebe. But yeah, their service is so awful that if their burgers and deli sandwiches weren't so damn good, I would never go there.
8/9/2011 11:55:24 PM
I too have had poor service at gypsies. I went there when I was in my first or second year at State with a group of friends... the waitress starts off the night with a lecture about tipping and tell the group that's how she makes a living. (had never been there, and I always tip appropriately.)There were about 8 of us, and a girl met us out there halfway through dinner (she had already eaten that night... we were going out somewhere after), and the waitress tells her that if she wants to stay then she has to order something or else she is not welcome to sit at our table. I think she ordered a drink. On top of that, she screwed up our orders and I did not get a refill on my beverage the entire time we were there. We left absolutely 0 tip and wrote a strongly worded letter explaining why. LAST LAUGH!
8/10/2011 1:23:58 AM
I mean my experience there is within the last year, not, you know, written in stone for the ages.So maybe it's changed since then. Certainly all the waitstaff there now are really nice, it's just they can't refill a drink worth a damn.

hillsborough st. and western are a wasteland of mediocre restaurants. I guess you could say college students weren't as privy to spend money (thus more fast food/chain stuff), but there's a ton of colleges that have signature restaurants/bars that have always attracted students and were beloved hangouts. What's NCSU's place? Mitch's? The bowling alley? Players Retreat? I liked the Greek place (Jasmine?) on Hillsborough that opened the year I graduatedI can't believe Melvin's is still there...remember Bowls that was there next to it for a few months? Is ten ten still there? that place sucked.
8/10/2011 2:38:45 AM
wasnt it like 3 dollars or more for a bowl of cereal at bowls[Edited on August 10, 2011 at 2:45 AM. Reason : ten-ten done been gone]

...Why so much hate we love you guys
8/10/2011 3:08:06 AM
no idea how I forgotbut I know it's a Raleigh staplebut Mitch's might actually be the most overrated place I've eaten at in my entire life.and what a shithole. I see bugs, and/or dust/grime on shit every time I've ever been there.uuughghhhh.
8/10/2011 7:47:13 AM
Blasphemy!! You take that back.^I said I love the bartenders. forgive me?[Edited on August 10, 2011 at 8:06 AM. Reason : ]

For real?? like, really for real? I just don't get it, man. I've had some of the worst food of my life there. My wife, too.

I laugh at people who automatically dismiss any and all chain restaurantsSome smug motherfuckers ITT.THYANKS!
8/10/2011 9:02:40 AM
^^ Oh my god I love that ridiculously huge sweet potato at Mitch's. I also like their hummus grape leaf platter although admittedly it's nothing all that special. And Rodolfo's Feast? Pure heaven.
8/10/2011 9:17:38 AM
^ ThatThey do have decent margaritas though, and for the longest time they had one of the better outside seating options in Raleigh...no so much anymore though
8/10/2011 9:30:14 AM
Lilly's is 4,000x better than Mellow Mushroom, and there are still at least 3 pizza places I'll eat at before Lilly's.Re: Mitch's. . .last time we went there, Britt got some veggie thing, and it was inedible. I mean, no taste whatsoever, an absolute mess. I cant' remember everything I got, but it was awful. I do remember a squash and feta cheese soup I got, which should be outstanding, but SHIT it was terrible. We just sat there and marveled at how it's still open. A ceiling tile right above us was about to cave in on us, and had very obvious water damage, as did 2/3 of the ones we looked at around us. Just an uncomfortably nasty place, for me.[Edited on August 10, 2011 at 9:34 AM. Reason : asdfdsaas]

I'll accept your feigned obtuseness. I assume that's some commentary on my soul, since it involved fried chicken, and "you ain't real".
8/10/2011 9:36:06 AM
One of my friends has a huge hard on for Mellow Mushroom. Thankfully every time he's wanted to go the wait has been ridiculously long so we just end up going to Raleigh Times or MoJoe's or something instead.
8/10/2011 9:36:09 AM
My wife loves Mellow Mushroom. Primarily, the pretzels.

who cried? that was quite a valid retort.
8/10/2011 9:40:27 AM
^^ Same. I would just find that incredibly insulting since it insinuates that based on the way you look she has determined you will be a shitty tipper. There is absolutely no way I would have continued sitting in her section. I probably would have left the restaurant altogether after talking with the manager and taking a business card for the owner.[Edited on August 10, 2011 at 9:41 AM. Reason : a]
8/10/2011 9:40:59 AM
fried chicken is not just fried chicken it is a wonderful craft artisaned by generations of slavery
8/10/2011 9:41:38 AM
fair enough. i think what i meant to convey was that I'll eat any fried chicken.
8/10/2011 9:42:41 AM
even bojos, i feel ya
8/10/2011 9:43:05 AM
Bojangles fried chicken is banging if you can get it fresh out of the fryer.
8/10/2011 9:44:22 AM
Man, I'll eat the motherfuck out of some Bojangle's
8/10/2011 9:44:54 AM
I was going to mention Rodolfo's feast as an example of the shitty food at Mitch's... I am stunned that it was described as amazingly good in this threadit's a pound of undercooked penne pasta (poorly drained) with a single scoop of mediocre chili on topratio is way off, tastes like ass
8/10/2011 9:49:25 AM
Hell naw, when I've gotten it the chili greatly outweighs the pasta. That's what I love about it. And I've always had it cooked perfectly al dente. Maybe you just had a bad batch
8/10/2011 9:50:25 AM
How has Sadlack's not shown up on this list? That shady place next to North Hall? Maybe it isn't there anymore, I haven't been to campus since I graduated in 2007. My fortran instructor back in 2003 would always bitch about that place. How is Sylvia's Pizza doing these days? That was always my favorite of the Hillsborough Street pizza places. I did like Amadeo's before it closed for renovations but it was still closed when I graduated so I never got a chance to go back before leaving. From this thread it looks like that was a good thing.Even though they got lots of hate in this thread, I loved Melvin's, Golden Dragon, and Mitch's. I'd go to one of those three just about every day for lunch when I was in senior design. I still have my old Melvin's tshirt, they'd give you free ice cream if you wore it when you went there haha.[Edited on August 10, 2011 at 9:52 AM. Reason : and whoever said Cook-Out was overrated can die in a fire]
yeah, Mitch's is definitely the most mind-boggling draw I can think of. Crazy to me.

I lived in Sullivan my freshman year and I think I went to eat at Sakura Express once. I don't remember it being memorable. I definitely remember it being god awful when I went back the next time in 2005 or so. The chicken dish that I got had chicken that would break your plastic knife if you tried to cut it into smaller pieces from the gargantuan pieces they threw in your teriyaki or whatever. Either give me a real knife or stop cooking leather-coated rocks, Sakura. Lol, one of my friends here in DC that went to State as well told me a story about a guy taking her on a date to the Wolves Den freshman year last night. That's one of those dates where you know there's not going to be a second one from the moment it starts. I missed a psyc test freshman year because I got so sick from the cheese sticks at the Wolves Den. Has anyone run for Student Body President on a platform of getting rid of that place and replacing it with a real restaurant, because I think that would be a winning issue.

My biggest complaint about mitches is if I ever go in and grab lunch all the non-alc drinks are so fucking watered down. I still haven't learned my lesson about ordering a tea with my sandwich.
8/10/2011 9:52:09 AM
I don't understand how any of you can eat at the mentioned places on Hillsborough, and not eat at Porter's. That shit breaks my brain.
8/10/2011 9:53:26 AM
I remember my sweet tea being quite ok. Went well with the black bean chili.
8/10/2011 9:54:20 AM
^^^^^ sadlack's has been completely overhauled and it is actually pretty good. sylvia's is gone, replaced with a chain called "hotbox."personally, i like mitch's, but people have different opinions. bringing up mitch's on here at this point is almost as played out as the eastern/western BBQ debate.[Edited on August 10, 2011 at 9:55 AM. 8/10/2011 9:54:36 AM
^ I like mitches too, just seems like I always get a watery coke or tea
8/10/2011 9:55:34 AM
Fucking Wing Zone...I hated that place with a passion
8/10/2011 9:55:45 AM
8/10/2011 9:55:55 AM
I've been to Sadlack's once, was decent. But that was like 8 years ago.I tell ya. . Player's Retreat is absolute garbage, and overpriced as motherfuck.^eh, it's not that expensive, really. Sure, more than melvin's, and those Chinese places, but it's not terribly pricy.[Edited on August 10, 2011 at 9:56 AM. Reason : asdfasd]
