Copeland and Holloman reaching MOC status already without having played a game for us

I'm just saying we shouldn't be paying "the big bucks" to guys with 3 years of high major experience and also 3 years of middling/disappointing stats.

But yeah expecting (or paying) holloman to come here and be anything more than what he showed at Michigan State is crazy. These transfers have shown exactly what they are at the college level. They aren't going to magically become something close to an all-conference level player after showing nothing for 3 years.

For the most part, yes. But on the other hand…DJ Horne? Jarkel Joiner?

Holloman doesn’t seem like a big time scorer. Seems like a good facilitator and a fine starting PG. He was the captain at MSU. I’ll take it.

Horns averaged 12.5 points at asu. joiner averaged 12.5 at ole miss. Both much more impressive than hollomann/breed/copeland/etc

Horne and JJ played 30 min a game, Tre only 20.

Nc state has plenty of instances of guys increasing their level with more minutes or just getting better. Of course plenty of the opposite too. Best bet is that they'll stay the same but that's why you get a few guys and play the one who performs.

We're on dangerous ground but I think you're making a slightly poor assumption

That said, no clue what kind of competition he plays against but stats don't seem impressive

Again, i don't expect the guy who couldn't carve out a starting role at Michigan State after 3 years to suddenly become a great starter here. I'm not saying we shouldn't have signed the guy, just saying that 1) he shouldn't be a guy we paid a ton for and 2) signing him shouldn't in any way hinder the potential recruitment of another, better PG. He's in all likelihood an upgrade from O'Connell, but that doesn't take much.

I don't think it's outlandish to not expect guys who've been in college 3+ years to suddenly make a big jump and go from relative non-factors to important players on a good ACC team. I would like to see some examples of guys who went from like 3 years of averaging 4 points and then came here and suddenly became a double digit scorer. I actually do like Holloman and there is some upside there, but he's also not going to be some star that Tom Izzo just held back for some reason.

Expecting big things from guys like him or Breed or Copeland or Arceneaux is just setting yourself up for disappointment. They're going to be what they've proven to be for 3 years already - role players. Would be nice to actually get another guy or two who can actually get buckets, we saw what a team compared entirely of role players looked like last season.

FTR i don't hate any of these guys (besides Copeland because fuck him and his turnover prone ass) but I don't buy into the hype train on a bunch of these guys. Retreads who have struggled to get on the court/score don't exactly do it for me. And I'm still concerned with the depth at the 4/5. I keep forgetting Paul McNeil stuck around, so there is optimism there and that freshman guard should be pretty good!

4 points? Where does that come from? I don't know about starting but he had the 4th most minutes on a top 10 team with 9 points game. Don't think it ridiculous for him to be a good starter on a top 40 team.

I guess we'll see

I also don’t think we signed Holloman to be a scorer. Obviously we need bucket getters. But I don’t think that’s Holloman’s game. He’s the facilitator.

He’s gonna be a significant upgrade on both ends of the court over MOC. Low bar, like Justin said, but he’ll clear it easily. He was captain for #2 seed MSU. I think he’ll be a significant contributor even if he’s not putting up tons of points. But I don’t think we’re asking him to drop in 16 ppg. He can drive and kick to Deng, a proven shooter. Or maybe Able and McNeil emerge as legit threats. Williams is a proven commodity. Yes, we’re banking on guys making strides. I also don’t think any of us are being unrealistic about what we expect from Holloman, Copeland, Bree’s specifically.

The Finn probably doesn’t get off the bench this year.

He's talking about Breed, which is probably a bad take on his part. The argument I've seen for Breed is that this'll be his 6th year in college (had to sit out after transferring to McNeese and then got injured last year 2 games in) and Wade/McNeese coaches said he was their best player before getting injured (score 17 against Alabama). His junior year at Providence (his 3rd year of averaging 4ppg!), these were the 3 guards he was taking shots behind: Devin Carter (#13 NBA draft pick), Noah Locke (super senior), and Jared Bynum (super senior). At worst, he'll be a solid guy off the bench.

Will Wade is so hot right now that even Finnish players are committing. How many more roster spots does he have to fill?

I think one?

Holloman
Williams
Arcenaux
Deng
Mbiya
McNeil
Able
Wilkins
Copeland
Breed
Langdon
Kontuniemi

Maybe Lubin or Sagnia last one?

I don’t even think I understand what you’re arguing, Justin. I don’t think he’s going to be an All American. I do think he’s a significant upgrade over Marcus Hill and MOC. I also think it’s obvious the Haggerty > Holloman. Haggerty and Holloman seem like very different styles, Haggerty is an elite scorer. Holloman’s strength seems to be creating for other with average scoring ability.

He is going to start at PG for us unless we get Haggerty. Which seems like a long shot at this point but what do I know. He has a track record of being a serviceable PG for an elite team. A HOF coach and a top 10 ish team thought enough of him to make him the team captain. I think it’s fair to say expecting Holloman to be an asset and significant piece on our team next year is fair. I also think that’s totally separate from projecting a major jump in his scoring….a trait he’s not known for and something nobody ITT has predicted. From what I understand he’s a facilitator, tough defender, and likes to drive in the paint. His shooting numbers are pretty average. His numbers were better in 2023 but on lower volume.

^^ I don’t even know what the roster limits are anymore if the House settlement passes

Sounds like Lubin is very likely.

I'm hopeful there's a chance Trey Parker returns too now that we seem to have moved on from Haggerty. Unless I missed it, he is the only guy from last year in the portal who hasn't committed to another team yet. (besides the ones with no eligibility waiting to see if one of the 5th year lawsuits lands an injunction).

If it’s not either of them it would be nice to get another 6’-10” guy or taller for down low. They may be all gone at this point though.

Need a big. Mbiya looks promising but obviously a big unknown with how that will translate to the ACC. Wilkins as a true frosh probably shouldn’t be expected to do a lot. VAL is undersized but has a let shown competency at this level.

If we have 2 spots left I’d say ideally

NEEDS = A BALLER BIG

NEEDS = BACKUP GUARD (to backup NPOY candidate Tre Holloman)
