So in other words....I could set up something that basically says....everytime a twit is lead by a ~ character...pull that post and post it to my feed?Also...all that stocktwits is basically doing is having an RSS feed?
2/28/2009 2:38:04 PM
you could set up a feed that would contain every post that contained the ~ characterand then set up a script/daemon on your site that would RT every one of those posts every time it showed up on the feedand yes, they are basically just pulling from the rss feed search of $
2/28/2009 2:39:53 PM
so if i go tweet $fuck stocktwits it would show up
2/28/2009 2:42:01 PM
So if I wanted to set this up....would this be when I'd have to dive into the whole API developer thing? In order to put let's say all ~ on my website, I'd have to get a php script (for example) that pulls it and posts to my site right? There are a hundred wikis ....which one would be the best way to go?
2/28/2009 2:45:44 PM
no, you wouldn't really need to get into any sort of APIjust pull the XML feed into your php script and use simplexml to parse it or just traverse the DOM treeif you have no idea what i'm talking about, you're going to be better off hiring someone to do it for you
2/28/2009 2:46:55 PM
Let's say I sort of know what you're talking about.....Any chance you could direct me to the scripts I'd need? I mean I currently have a thing on my website that pulls RSS feeds and parses them so it's similar to that then I could probably figure it out..... I use magpie to parse the feeds...is that the same idea of what you're talking about?
2/28/2009 3:10:49 PM
hrmf......So I tried testing just a basic thing and it ain't working http://www.phpclasses.org/browse/package/4011.html
2/28/2009 3:43:45 PM
can you explain in more detail what you're trying to do?rss feeds already exist for twitter so you shouldn't need to use the API for anythingfor example, the feed for 'tww' is http://search.twitter.com/search.atom?q=twwjust plug the feed url into whatever you already have to display feeds on your website
2/28/2009 3:47:21 PM
Well I guess I'm trying to figure out a couple things....The first thing was that I was trying to figure out how to have, let's say, my own Twitter updates on a website of mine...The second thing is that I'm basically trying to figure out how something like http://stocktwits.com/ works. I assume that they're just saying (via their code whatever it is) if you see a $ sign anywhere in anyone's twitter update, then pull that post and post it it to our page.......right?
2/28/2009 3:59:12 PM
1. users have built in feeds for their updates as well. plug it into magpie or a wordpress plugin or whatever and ready to go2. you pretty much got the right idea]
2/28/2009 4:00:56 PM
hmmm....OK....so a couple questions...1) Since I use magpie for other RSS feeds...if I wanted to have the twitter feed 'look' like they do on twitter...is their a specific way to format it?2) Is there an escape character I'd need in order to find say all posts that have the $ sign? Right now it's not pulling anything if I use that sign.3) So then if I'm trying to just pull my own twitter updates, how do I get those? I tried doing something like @mytwitteraccount but that didn't work....?

i don't really know of any scripts that do what you want to do... but i haven't really looked it's really very simple, and any solution you find on the web, you're gonna have to customize to meet your exact needs, so why not just write one yourself?hell, if you want, i could whip something together real quick for you. but only because i totally <3 you.

3/2/2009 1:55:37 AM
How do most of you find people outside of those you have in your address book? For instance - I'm getting a fair amount of requests from people I don't know, and wondering how they found me.
3/3/2009 8:37:25 AM
by looking at the people my friends are talking toalso, in tweetdeck you can have a panel for searches. so for example i have a panel for 'Charlotte OR CLT' and if i see somebody say something interesting, i check out their profile/post history and maybe follow themprobably about half the people who follow me that i didn't already know are just promoting a service of some kind. i just ignore them
3/3/2009 9:25:29 AM
i have 74 followersless than 20 are people i know IRLadd in tww people (who i obviously still don't know IRL, mostly) and you're up to MAYBE 27 or 28so i'd say a good 2/3 of my followers are complete strangersi pick up most of my folks through hashtag commentsi.e., i know i'm going to pick up some people on thursdays because i talk about #LOSTi know i'm going to pick up some people on fridays because of #followfridayand a lot of times if i'm extra bored, i'll check out the most popular searches and play along with the random #hashtags going aroundlike last week i picked up a few followers after i made up some #fakeanimalfactsand like qntm said, you do searchesin no way should twitter just be you following and being followed by people you actually know

its funny because it doesn't fully grasp the irony of using a platform (streaming web video) hosted on a website that wouldn't exist without the early adopters of twitter to mock twitterand by "its funny" i mean "its annoying as fuck"i did chuckle like a motherfucker at the fail whale
