Yea basically, energy required to heat water is fairly linear. The specific heat of water changes as the water temperature changes and the formula for heating water is Energy = Specific Heat * mass * deltaT, however the range of temperature you are talking about for a water heater is so small that the specific heat is basically constant.

There is no food in my house. Thus, in lieu of dinner, I took a couple of Tylenol PM, a couple of shots of Nyquil and a few swigs of wine. Yay for the Nyquil diet/budget! Also, I have yet to turn on the A/C yet and my house has been over 80 degrees every day. But I'm cold if the temp is below 78 anyway, so that's no big deal.

Today, instead of buying comic books, I just read em and left em in the store.

Still awake! I stock my house with napkins and condiments from fast food restaurants.I also don't have a TV and I read free books/magazines for entertainment. Free books and magazines come from the free pile at work. Sometimes they suck, but they're entertaining anyway! Moar Nyquil!

No more buying drinks at work. Going from $3-4 a day to about $0.75 by taking three 12 ounce cans with me. Assuming I work 250 days a year, that means I'll save $600 to $800 a year, wish I started doing this sooner.
4/27/2010 9:42:57 PM
Instead of buying jackets, make them like......he did.
4/27/2010 9:44:42 PM
Instead of going out to lunch at 8 to 10 dollars per day, I have a PB sandwich, which costs approx 50 cents. Total cost savings: approx $2,250 to $2850 per year
4/27/2010 9:48:22 PM

Does anybody have any actual numbers on the whole unplugging the DVR thing? It just seems kinda weird to me, if you are willing to pay that much extra to have DVR why aren't you willing to pay what I can only imagine would be a very small increase in the power bill? If it is a decent amount though, I might consider it...
4/27/2010 10:49:25 PM
i started shutting off the power strip with my ps3, cable box/dvr, and receiver down during the day when i'm not there and at nightdon't know if it is making a difference yet

I steal solar panels from construction sites and put them on my house to save money. That way I can avoid the initial investment cost and make green energy cost effective.

I cleaned my room and found $30! I also like to hang out by the dumpster and ask people if they're really throwing some items away. Usually they'll give me stuff that I can sell for a few bucks on craigslist.
5/2/2010 5:44:32 PM
^ at goodwill or other thrift stores too that happens when people are dropping shit off. i mean you can even find stuff you actually NEED if you're lucky. my aunt needed a stroller to walk her dog in (don't ask) but she wasn't going to buy a new one (duh) so she went to goodwill or something and some dude was unloading a stroller to donate and she asked him about and he just gave it to her!
5/2/2010 5:46:32 PM
heheputting your dog in a stroller sounds really cute
5/2/2010 5:49:20 PM
hahaha. well she is like obsessed with her dog and she probably needs to put her down but she doesn't so she pushes her around so she doesn't have to walk (cause she is old)

We decided to not get cable, only high-speed internetz. I also bought powder Gatorade so I can make my own. Now we just need to get better about turning lights off.
10/26/2010 8:07:08 AM
hold on to your receipts! if the same item you purchased goes on sale within the allotted return period, buy it a second time at the reduced price and then return the item on the first receipt!
10/26/2010 8:15:14 AM
^^we might do that too. If I could somehow have showtime + hbo only and pair that with what I get OTA and netflix I would definitely do that.
10/26/2010 8:16:03 AM
yeah, we download Dexter, so we really only need cable to watch football games. ESPN 3 is supposed to be available to TWC customers today.
10/26/2010 8:21:56 AM
with comcast it was cheaper to bundle the high speed internetz and the basic $13 cable package than just getting internet alone. then i just didnt turn in the box, and still got the local broadcast channels in hd.that was my old place. ballin out now for some reason.
10/26/2010 8:23:55 AM
You have to have a cable subscription to access ESPN3
