Also, a cop that I know just got suspended from the job for PASSING STOPPED HANDICAP SCHOOL BUS WHILE IT WAS LETTING A HANDICAP CHILD OFF THE BUS in his squad car.
What was his excuse for doing it? "I didn't think it mattered since I was in a cop car"

Yeah, so they yelled police at ~12:45 in the morning, throw a fucking concussion grenade through the window, which really woke everyone up.

They fucked up. These raids are easily fucked up. There was no reason not to blockade the house and request the suspect to surrender.

The police, and SWAT especially do a horrible job of creating a controlled environment or making peaceful captures. They are overly concerned about making sure that evidence is intact and not nearly concerned enough with making sure that shots are not fired unnecessarily. Generally speaking they have more than enough manpower and equipment to create a peaceful surrender, but choose to conduct full scale raids or assaults because there's a chance that evidence could be destroyed.

Now, I don't know about you, but I don't think we should be utilizing SWAT to raid someone's house if they only have a couple of plants, and certainly not if they have such a limited amount of a substance that it can be flushed.

Our ridiculous "war on drugs" has caused this style of policing, and only putting an end to it and creating public transparency of police departments will improve it.

It is absolutely horrible that the young girl got killed and the incident should be investigated thoroughly if for no other reason than to learn how to avoid similar situations in the future. BUT, are you seriously advocating that surrounding the house and creating a standoff situation is a more desirable tactic? Logic and history suggest to me that backing a person who is suspected to not have any problem taking life in a corner with potential hostages is an incredibly bad idea.

I'm unsure of the relationship between the murder suspect and the family which occupied the house. If there were a intimate connection, I would suspect that they would not hold the family as hostages. If however, the murder suspect had no connection to the family, he may take them as hostages and the family would be aware of the situation. SWAT response would in this case be appropriate.

However, what happened was a struggle by an occupant who was not the murder suspect and who was possibly very confused by the style of the raid. I know I would be very confused when awakened by a blast loud as a handgun, I know I was once woken from a deep sleep by a loud brown paper bag and a spot-light and proceeded to attack my offending suite mates without any due reasoning or logic involved. Instead, we're allowing the police to take hostages and sort out their affairs at gunpoint with very alarmed people involved. What's worse is that there is almost no legal recourse against the police in a botched raid, and mostly because it's not the officers' fault for being in that situation. The blame should lie on the politics and people which place officers in these hostile situations.

In the end, I'm just as concerned with preventing the loss of life as you all are. I'm quite certain that these violent raids are not the way to accomplish the minimum number of casualties.

The apartment was a duplex, the girl was killed in the side of the duplex in which there was no murder suspect, the warrant was for the street address and not a particular unit. The police really fucked this one up.
