there's not a god damn thing wrong with socialism
any government of the people, by the people, and for the people is going to involve socialism

there are many different ways to construct a "government of the people, by the people, and for the people" not all of which involve socialism, whatever your definition of socialism may be

i think we should all be able to agree though that if venezuela is a "government of the people, by the people, and for the people" then it hasn't worked out too well.

Maybe this will end up being a good result, but I'm sure it won't give cover / justification for other powerful regimes to do whatever they want just because they can.

You fly into Caracas abduct Maduro and bring him back to Washington for a show trial for drug trafficking and killings Americans with fentanyl.

On the way out you kill every high-ranking member of the existing VZ admin clearing the way for an over-night regime change.

Now Canada exports to the U.S. roughly 3.5m barrels of oil per day much of which is heavy crude.

Meanwhile VZ only exports a little under 1m bpd due to severe under investment post sanctions all of which goes to China.

So overnight you have gained four levers.

1. You have now scared the shit out of Petro in Colombia and Mulino in Panama and to a lesser degree Lula in Brazil. That has benefits as we approach decoupling.

2. You have now scared the shit out of the narcos. This has obvious benefits regarding forcing a mix shift away from fent.

3. You now have a lever against China by controlling an important client state and source of commodities.

4. You now have a lever against Canada by threatening to invest in and divert heavy crude from Venezuela if Trump decides to crush the Canadian economy to push out China.

"

Quote :
"A C.I.A. source within the Venezuelan government monitored the location of Nicolás Maduro in both the days and moments before his capture by American special operation forces, according to people briefed on the operation.

The American spy agency, the people said, produced the intelligence that led to the capture of Mr. Maduro, monitoring his position and movements with a fleet of stealth drones that provided near constant monitoring over Venezuela, in addition to the information provided by its Venezuelan sources.

It is not clear how the C.I.A. recruited the Venezuelan source who informed the Americans of Mr. Maduro’s location. But former officials said the agency was clearly aided by the $50 million reward the U.S. government offered for information leading to Mr. Maduro’s capture.

In his confirmation hearing last year, John Ratcliffe, the C.I.A. director, promised he would lead a more aggressive agency, one willing to conduct covert operations to both collect information and advance American policy. President Trump authorized the C.I.A. to take more aggressive action last fall, and then in November approved planning and preparation for a series of operations in Venezuela.

In late December, the C.I.A. used an armed drone to conduct a strike on a dock that U.S. officials believed was being used by a Venezuelan gang to load drugs on to boats.

One of the people briefed on Mr. Maduro’s capture said it was the product of a deep partnership between the agency and the military and involved “months of meticulous planning.” While the C.I.A. played a critical role in planning and carrying it out, the mission was a law enforcement operation by the U.S. military’s special operation forces, rather than operation carried out under the agency’s authority."

I've always wondered if that's part of what this is all about: Nation-building Venezuela so that Venezuelans will stop coming here and/or go back home.

Ignoring the legality of this, the prudence of this, and how likely we are to supremely fuck up the day-after and day-after-tomorrow of this...

I am impressed that we were able to pull off what we did, militarily. I didn't realize this, but they had a number of SA-23 SAMs. That is an extremely bad-ass, no-joke air defense system. I've been out of the counter-IADS and SEAD game for 15 years now, although still tangentially informed about it. I've studied stuff at the SECRET/NOFORN level as recently as a couple of years ago, but I haven't been read-in at the TS/SCI level in a long time.

I would have assumed that we could roll back a modern IADS like that, for sure. I am impressed that we were able to either destroy or suppress it thoroughly and immediately enough to insert and exfil a ground force (who are much more vulnerable--they can't get tier-1 units in and out of there with F-35s and B-2s and standoff weapons), with the whole thing taking only a couple of hours.

The display of force and unity undermined President Trump's earlier comments that
Washington would work with Rodríguez to run Venezuela.

That was the Harris Biden policy. Help our neighbors be stable so we don’t have refugee crises. Historically deposing a leader dramatically worsens refugee crisis and likely will happen here. That’s what I was suspecting as the weird Argentina policy— they’re paying them preemptively to absorb refugees.

Stability, respect for law, and democratic transition are critical to the future of Venezuela and the broader Americas. In this regard, Guyana supports efforts that uphold democratic norms and ensure that the region remains a Zone of Peace.
The Government of Guyana welcomes the leadership of the President of the United States in reaffirming shared commitments to freedom, democracy, and regional security. We look forward to constructive engagement in Venezuela’s next chapter in the interest of all Venezuelans.

I mean, we basically always have that. If you had to name one main, most core mission of the CIA, that's probably it.

Also the Department of State touches that, and even a few pieces of JSOC do, too.

^ Guyanese are not happy about this. It was actually Maduros opposition (the Nobel peace prize winner) that was pushing for invading Guyana even more than Maduro. And the statements of this being about oil after Guyana just started drilling is making people nervous. That statement is diplomatic, they can’t say trump is a moron because they need American oil companies, who currently run the oil drilling operations, to keep doing that, as well as America to keep selling them weapons. But the emphasis in rule of law and democracy clearly have a subtext that they don’t like the actions. Stability is better than chaos. Guyana has also been dealing with a migrant crisis and this is expected to make this worse.

If they agreed with the action they would have said so. It would have been more direct praise than aspirational. This makes everything worse for Guyana from what it looks like now— why would they like it? For some additional context I was born in Guyana and keep up with their politics and social media.
