My snails had babies. I think they're apple snails. I have a ton so let me know if you want some.
11/28/2006 11:55:34 AM
does this include the chick that reaches in to grab them w/ a white shirt
11/28/2006 12:26:40 PM
are they safe with betta fish?
11/28/2006 12:53:53 PM
^ I can give you some of the older ones that aren't as tiny. If you take the little bitty ones, he will eat them, but the first generation is big enough to be OK.
11/28/2006 1:17:05 PM
cool...when do u want me to get them...i wish i could get them now but my mom is actually about to come up to raleigh to do some apt. stuffi'm prolly free after like 4 though
11/28/2006 1:21:12 PM
I'd like some snails.
11/28/2006 2:05:18 PM
^ OK. Just send me a PM with how many you want and when you can pick them up. I'll be on campus tomorrow all day (8 a.m. until late that night) and Thursday after 2 (which would be the better day for me ... and the snails).
11/28/2006 2:22:06 PM
honestly i hate to do this but can i reschedule for thursday?long story short, i got 3 hours of sleep and woke up at 1:30am wired as fuck for some reason and i had to do a bunch of apartment shit today....i think i'm seriously about to like pass out
11/28/2006 4:21:28 PM
I guess that works. I'll bring them back with me then.
11/28/2006 4:24:33 PM
escargot
11/28/2006 4:26:26 PM
i thought snails were bad with bettas due to the fish liking to sleep on the bottom and the snails slowly kill them
11/28/2006 5:11:32 PM
11/28/2006 5:20:06 PM
They are brown. I have never heard of anyone having a problem with bettas and snails together. If you never clean the tank or something it would be a problem, but that would be bad anyway. ^ heh, me neither. I like snails because they're fairly easy and you don't have to worry about them too much.
11/28/2006 6:25:21 PM
excuse a possibly dumb question, but what do snails eat?
11/28/2006 6:29:35 PM
they eat what you don't see. algea...fish poop...rocks
11/28/2006 6:51:38 PM
oh i like these things already...my fish doesnt eat all his food sometimes and after a long while the smell kinda gets bad
11/28/2006 7:16:49 PM
oh, yeah, snails are supergreat for fishtanks 1.they don't die as easily as placos or other bottom feeders2.they're cool3.they're cheap4.zero maintenance
11/28/2006 7:23:10 PM
yo now i'm kinda interested in snailsare they expensive...can you buy like really bad ass looking snails?[Edited on November 28, 2006 at 7:24 PM. Reason : .]
11/28/2006 7:24:35 PM
um...i don't knowthere's always sharpies..oh and you could wait till their shell is thick enough and get a dremmel tool..and....um...well, probably not
11/28/2006 7:34:44 PM
^^ and wtf
11/28/2006 7:35:30 PM
sorry...long day...i'm freaking wired like i cant sleep or something and tww is more fun than tv ok sorry for filling your thread up so much
11/28/2006 7:42:53 PM
id prolly take a few as well, how many would I need for a 30 gallon tank?
11/28/2006 8:39:15 PM
What about with turtles? Are they ok with a turtle?
11/28/2006 9:44:31 PM
^ I don't know about the turtle. It depends on the temperament of the turtle more than the snail. I'm sure Google would know.^^ It depends on what other fish and stuff you have in there. A lot of people go by the rule of one inch of fish per gallon of water. I can't find much about how many snails it's OK to put in a tank, but I would assume a snail counts as about an inch of fish.
11/28/2006 9:56:09 PM
how many u willin to give out if i wanted a good amount, got a 30 gallon aq.
11/28/2006 9:59:46 PM
OK ... I think I have responded to all the PMs I've gotten. If you've sent one and I haven't, let me know. I think everyone should be aware that aside from about 10 of the snails, they are all very young and thus very tiny. If you want me to hold them for you so they get a little bigger (i.e., so stuff won't eat them) I can do that. But I have around 100 right now, so my tank can't really hold that many for a long period of time. If you want me to keep them until they get older, I can separate them. I didn't really expect people to jump on this so fast.Oh, and there are also more eggs, so I'll probably have them to give away for quite a while ...
11/28/2006 10:16:14 PM
I don't think it really matters to anyone, but I've been doing a little research about snails and there's a chance these aren't actually apple snails. They still look very similar, though. The reason I don't think they are apple snails is they are supposed to lay their eggs above water, and mine lay them below water. I can't find much about what kind of snails they really are, though.I may pick up some more (older) snails next weekend if anyone wants some of the older ones.
11/29/2006 9:56:01 AM
as soon as i get a tank i'll come a-callin
11/29/2006 2:14:43 PM
i promise i wont not meet you tomorrow to get these
11/29/2006 3:36:48 PM
i put them in like 5 hours ago...just found them nowi had no clue snails could swim...i thought they just slid across everythingmy betta is keeping his eye on one of them too, i thought he was gonna try to eat it or something
11/30/2006 7:14:20 PM
I forgot to ask earlier: How big should they get? How often/how long will it be before they breed?
11/30/2006 7:21:54 PM
they get about 1/2"-3/4" in diameter, and can lay eggs about every 6 days or so...they have to be about 2-3 months old to lay eggs
11/30/2006 7:24:41 PM
^^ yeah, he is right, and the ones I gave you are old enough to mate now. If you don't want them to breed, you can just take the eggs out of the tank after they lay them. They will be easy to see.
11/30/2006 9:50:16 PM
^^ Yeah, I didn't realize that since they're so small. What do the eggs look like? They already have 2 blob like things at the bottom of their fishbowl. :s
11/30/2006 11:13:46 PM
You'll pretty much be able to tell they are eggs. The bundle looks a lot like snot. It's a clear bundle with little spots in it.I don't know what the "blobs" could be.One thing I forgot to mention -- put a lid on whatever you put them in. They like to crawl out of things.
12/1/2006 7:09:43 AM
do they need a filter?.....
12/1/2006 8:31:36 AM
Not as long as you clean the tank every once in a while. You shouldn't scrub the sides or anything because that would take away their algae, but you need to take out the poop and stuff.
12/1/2006 9:08:15 AM
I do believe they are eggs then.
12/1/2006 9:44:34 AM
12/1/2006 3:14:44 PM
i want some! i just got a tank when...you think?[Edited on December 1, 2006 at 10:04 PM. Reason : .]
12/1/2006 10:03:08 PM
I want snails! I can take 4 or so, I have 2 tanks. Let me know
12/2/2006 8:53:56 AM
I have two people coming to get some this morning, so I'll see how many they take. If I still have several left, I'll let you know. Otherwise, I can pick up some more on Dec. 10 (the person I got mine from has about 80 of the older ones that are actually big enough to see) and you can get them from me after then if that works out. It would be nice if you (^^) can give me an idea of how many you want so I don't end up picking up 20 and only giving away 3 or something.
12/2/2006 10:19:15 AM
i'll take four or five, depending on size, three if they're quarter-sized..ish, four if dime
12/2/2006 9:07:45 PM
I still have a bunch of babies left. Anyone else want any before the break?
12/5/2006 9:53:15 AM
I would like some. Let me know when I can pick them up.
12/5/2006 2:11:21 PM
haha all you guys getting these snails will have the same problem soon. Hundreds and hundreds of snails taking over the tank. These guys reproduce very quickly! You might need to think about getting a snail eater soon like a clown loach.
12/5/2006 2:54:34 PM
hey these things dont eat betta fins do they?^i dont think i should have these cause they might kill my fish[Edited on December 5, 2006 at 2:58 PM. Reason : .]
12/5/2006 2:55:37 PM
^They shouldn't, but it's possible. If you don't want them you can give them back to me. ^^ I've been telling everyone to take out the eggs if they don't want them to breed. I like having babies, though, so I let them have them on purpose.
12/5/2006 3:21:00 PM
finding the eggs can be very hard. They will lay them on decorations, plants, even gravel, as well as the sides of the tank. If they are at the bottom it will be impossible to see. I had the same problem after buying plants from Petsmart and it took quite a while (and lots of crushed snails) to control them.
12/5/2006 4:21:03 PM
haha, the suckers do NOT touch beta's my beta tried to eat the buggers, but they were too big.....
