Um, that's a pretty good price . . . . even shitty non-Dell replacements are $25+ shipped. Also, I'd make sure its actually the power cord and not the connector on the laptop that's bad.[Edited on October 28, 2007 at 8:52 PM. Reason : .]

you're right. i did some shopping...here's what happens- when i plug it in, the indicator light stays green for a while and then fades out and the power source switches to the battery. BUT if i jiggle the cord around at the outlet, i can find a spot and it will stay on. so i'm pretty sure its the cord... what do you think?

That's most likely the connector, actually. Its a pretty common problem in laptops of all types, over time the solder contacts from the connector to the laptop motherboard will break. It can also be caused by people tripping over the power cord, etc.Unfortunately its a bit more of an involved fix, and requires completely disassembling the laptop and re-soldering the connector. I typically charge a $50 flat fee for that type of repair.

that same thing happened to my laptop. It sucks.

^fregnac is absolutely right - you need to resolder teh power connector on the board - he may charge less if you dissassemble it before hand, and bring him just the board.

I just purchased a brand new PA-10 power cord for my Inspiron 8500. Cost was $18.00 + shipping off eBay. I got it within 2 days of ordering. It's an actual Dell power cord & it's a 90W... just took sifting through all the crap on eBay to find it. There were a couple of people selling them on Craigslist, so you could look/post there. Only response I got that wasn't already sold was for a 65W, which you definitely don't want with the 8600. It's just not enough for the 8500/8600- keeps you processing on battery levels all the time. Good luck.[Edited on October 30, 2007 at 9:48 AM. Reason : didn't read before posting... in my experience, fregac knows his stuff... good guy]
