i just use maple for shit like that, you can format things in itand if i need advanced formatting/etc, you can just save the equation as a png and import it

if you don't like word's eqn editor, you're going to get pissed at LaTeX until you get over the relatively huge learning curve.Try MathType alsoI use LaTeX for 90% of my papers, including my dissertation. It's well worth it and once you use it you'll have a hard time going back to Word. Word : LaTeX :: Algebraic : RPN

no that's not the issue. past a certain spot in what i'm writing, which i can find although i can't identify the cause, i can't change the font in equation editor.i'll grant you that this is a minor inconvienence, and i could just change the font of the rest of my shit, but i'm angry w/ word.

MathTypeintegrates into Word

ok but the point is that i want to not use word.

Latex is super-useful but it takes a quite a few hours to learnalso, there aren't a lot of campus CPUs that will compile it...usually I have to use a Mac

Did you ever figure it out?

openoffice math...

i tried for a while with it myself, but mostly got bogged down with the commands to do very simple things that I wanted done. I had similar feelings towards the equation stuff in it, but Maple is clearly not a substitution. Even Mathematica doesn't do real presentation level formatting of equations, but I'll still wind up using Word for that 90% of the time.I need to switch to Linux for lent
