a few different people who have lived in upstate NY told me "be careful, and watch that shit if you go there"

looking online, I see the percentage of just about every race other than white is around 1-2%
around 6% near a university in the area (which is about 30 miles away)

so yea, he pretty much said that. I'm not gonna say we're not racist up North, but EMCE, don't think they'll be burning crosses or shit on your yard. in small towns like that, everyone is pretty much German, Scottish, English. probably some Irish thrown in there too. they'd not like my family because we're Italian. but nothing totally overt. you won't be the most popular person in town, but that's about it when it comes to racism.

I live in a small town that is not culturally diverse at all. However, the majority people in the town are educated beyond HS and fairly wealthy. They just live here to commute 1/2 hour away-more land, bigger houses, less congestion.

By not culturally diverse, I mean out of 6,000 people there are probably 50 blacks and 100 "others".

No. Spending time, money, and effort supporting and being a part of a community that would look down on you isn't something I could do. (unless the community was already starting to change its outlook and I could help it along, but the short answer is no)

But I wouldn't make a rash decision either. Do you have the option of spending a week up there and seeing how you like it?

level of education probably has a lot to do with how you are treated. Living near the university would likely put you in a better area. However, just because an area is predominately white does not mean all or any of them hate minorities. The white people in mostly black towns in eastern NC are drastically more racist than most people who live in smalls towns up north, at least in my experiences.

at any rate, i think that you'll most likely be fine. from my experience in growing up out in bum fuck egypt, i don't think you'll find that people are really much (if any) more racist than their city counterparts. the few racists out in rural and small town areas might be a little more vocal and upfront about it, but i don't think they're much, if any, more plentiful.

also, even many/most of those who are no-shit, card-carrying racists by anyone's definition still won't give you any shit or really even have any problem with you as long as you have your shit together. they'll mostly just expect the worst from you and attribute any shortcoming they see to you being black.

myself, I've never really lived in a small city/town/village. I'm going to avoid actually living there and commuting if I can. I was born in DC, and lived in atlanta, charlotte, raleigh, norfolk/va beach, etc....
I just don't know what to expect from a really small town where the locals might be very uneducated.

In urban areas, everyone is the outsider, so everyone kind of gets along because most of you are expatriates from somewhere else.

in a rural area, you're going to be the outsider amongst a bunch of insiders. that alone will make things weird at first, but you seem pretty affable on TWW, so if you go into it with the same non-presumptuous and / or arrogant attitude, you'll get along fine. You'll never be one of them, but you'll be accepted.

i lived in a small town in kansas for work for 8 months

longest 8 months of my life

all i did was sleep when i wasn't at work

i knew i'd be moving within a year so that helped get me out of bed everyday

population 4000 & i was the only non married, no children female in my age range within a 20mile radius...
