We talked about this in CE 503 highway design. It's kind of blows the mind. http://intersectionsystem.com/eng/product02.htmlEnlarge and watch the animation(on the left). It's mainly for two arterials meeting each other and it takes up less right-of-way than a conventional diamond interchange. Also, free flowing traffic. The other one they have on there is the two level signalized intersection.

So what exactly is an arterial?(I know you were hoping someone would ask that)
5/2/2008 12:11:18 PM
It's like a road that is Western blvd or Wake Forest rd. It's just a big road that a lot of people travel on. Gorman street is a 2 lane arterial and Western is a 4 lane arterial. Avent Ferry would be a collector because it takes traffic to the arterial.Interstates can sometimes be considered arterials, but they are access controlled.
5/2/2008 12:13:32 PM
literally mind blowing.
5/2/2008 12:14:58 PM
this is genius. and you could throw a park in the middle for the environmental ppl to be happy too.this is great
5/2/2008 12:15:18 PM
$$$$$$$$
5/2/2008 12:17:39 PM
^The construction cost wouldn't be that much more than a diamond interchange. It's patented though...so there's extra cost.[Edited on May 2, 2008 at 12:20 PM. Reason : -]
5/2/2008 12:17:47 PM
it looks greatuntill you consider that women have to drive on it too
5/2/2008 12:19:37 PM
If they had one at every interchange on 440(except 440 at the 40), that would be kinda cool.[Edited on May 2, 2008 at 12:21 PM. Reason : ^lol]
5/2/2008 12:21:33 PM
looks like a traffic circle and an overpass had a little bastard child
5/2/2008 12:21:40 PM
and asian women especially
5/2/2008 12:22:05 PM
5/2/2008 12:24:45 PM
also, i know NY and DC have basically this system for a lot of their main arteriesand i would imagine a lot of major cities do as well...its not exactly the same as the design shown, but very similarie check out many of the upper NW alphabet avenues (like K, L St, NW) and (M St, SE and S. Capitol intersection)they operate basically the same way
5/2/2008 12:26:01 PM
somebody find one on google street view
5/2/2008 12:26:46 PM
type "South Capitol St SE & M St, SE, Washington, DC 20003, USA"into google maps and switch on satellite viewwe have a lot of those on main straight arteries in the city
5/2/2008 12:28:57 PM
5/2/2008 12:29:18 PM
the yellow cars keep getting into accidents and cutting people off must be the women and asians
5/2/2008 12:29:39 PM
Looks like a technological catastrophe waiting to happen to me.
5/2/2008 12:30:21 PM
You guys keep mentioning Asians...I forgot to say that all these are Korean designs.
5/2/2008 12:31:01 PM
This is making my head hurt, but I can't stop watching those little dots circle around!!!My brain isn't working well today, so its totally blowing my mind![Edited on May 2, 2008 at 12:32 PM. Reason : No one doubts their intelligence...they just can't drive worth a fuck]
5/2/2008 12:31:42 PM

5/2/2008 12:34:39 PM
DC has traffic circles... which isnt the same as this at all
5/2/2008 12:35:20 PM
Just saying, you would have failed any kind of transportation class and everyone in there would laugh at you.
5/2/2008 12:37:16 PM
yeah but its not really laughable. pretty honest mistake
5/2/2008 12:39:07 PM
^^^jaybee continued to not know what the fuck he's talking about!its not even a mistakehe's splitting hairs for god knows what reason and its not even really effective because the word DERIVES from ARTERYIM GETTING FUCKING HYPE OVER THIS[Edited on May 2, 2008 at 12:40 PM. Reason : haha]
5/2/2008 12:39:24 PM
GET BUCK SON
5/2/2008 12:40:54 PM
I wasn't trying to split hairs. Just not used to it. After looking at the 3rd definition of one and the 2nd of the other, they both in fact, mean the same thing.
5/2/2008 12:43:27 PM
the first 4 miles of I440 in between jones franklin and wade avenue is in GROSS need of upgrade
5/2/2008 12:50:02 PM
5/2/2008 12:53:21 PM
We had a project this semester to redesign the interchange at 440 and Wake Forest rd. It's probably going to need an overhaul withing the next 20 years.Shit, 440/40 and US 1 is a frickin huge interchange that takes up massive amount of land for right-of-way. A smaller interchange there would free up good real estate for commercial use.[Edited on May 2, 2008 at 12:56 PM. Reason : Dude, me and Agent 0 were talking. Agent 0 is saying you didn't pick up on that.]

Our instructor made it seem like a big deal, but he's got like 16 patented intersections. Not all of them are in use though.

i would welcome the following traffic pattern near my house with gratitude:
5/2/2008 1:37:19 PM
free flowing traffic FTWidiot drivers ftl

5/2/2008 1:43:18 PM
i vote for the following to be implemented
5/2/2008 1:50:01 PM
Hell, just make it a 4-level intersection, with the top and bottom levels having the cars just go straight and the two middle roundabouts are the turns for each road.
5/2/2008 1:54:30 PM
i concur with your viewpoints slackerb
5/2/2008 1:55:22 PM
JUST MAKE FLYING CARSGET ON THAT ALKATRAZDID THEY TEACH YOU THAT IN YOUR TRAFFIC DESIGN CLASS???FUCKING HIRE DOC BROWNhahaj/k

tww has some quality posts today. this is a great improvement over the last 6 months or so. must be finals ending and people finally cooling down or something.thank you tww

einstein-rosen bridge intersection ftw
5/2/2008 11:54:38 PM
We must do this we spend more money on roads in this state then in educationfuck the kidsthis is cool
5/3/2008 10:08:45 AM
North Carolina was never known for education. It was the Good Roads State long ago, though.
5/3/2008 10:54:26 AM
cool, but the problem with some of those is the far left lane entrances/exits. puts too many slow people in those lanes, and then you always have the dumbasses who don't know where they're going, so their cutting across the highway trying to exit
5/3/2008 11:01:27 AM
i like the circlepracticalcan definitely think of a few places in Wake Co where a few of these could go
