I was only gone from the house for a short time - from about 8-8:25 a.m. and my car was still in the driveway while I was out with the dog. My husband was already at work. Anyhow, the police officer strongly recommended that we call the non-emergency number IMMEDIATELY if we see unusual characters going door-to-door again. Our neighbors across the street said that the visitors they've had to the house have all come in the middle of the day on a weekday, at times when most people wouldn't otherwise be at home. Now hearing about these break-ins to people's cars adds to the anxiety a bit. Not to mention the front page article in yesterday's N&O about the huge spike in home invasions and robberies between this year and last. I'm sorry for not posting sooner, but I'll be sure to share anything else that may happen."

my dad's house got broken into yesterday in pittsboro. scary thing is, he pretty much lives out in the middle of nowhere. they caught the guys and said they've been involved in a series of break-ins throughout chatham county.

I don't know much about this neighborhood, but I'm guessing it's one of those kind of gentrified neighborhoods that sit not too far from sketchier neighborhoods?

That's definitely not cool, but those people are all fools for having left stuff in their car if they're in a gentrified neighborhood as I've described it.

One of the other homes has a long winding driveway through the woods where the house can't be seen from the road with beware of dog signs. None of that deterred him. Police were called from the non-emergency number and 911 but nobody ever saw them. "

Damn. I keep my car doors locked and try to keep valuables out of sight...hopefully no one would break in to take a shitty factory radio or on the chance that there might be something in the center console.

Of course you could be a lot more of an ass instead of just pointing a loaded gun at him and telling him to go away, but I think this would get the point across considering the guy seems to be reasonably smart. He knows to leave when people catch him in their garage, he'd probably know not to come back if some crazy asshole with a gun told him to go away.

Crime is everyone's problem. Just because he won't come back to your house doesn't mean it's all good. It would be best for the guy to get caught so none of us have to worry about him.

And I really don't think this area is that sketchy. There are thieves everywhere. If it's not some dude stealing your tools it will be a 15 year old kid trying to gank your mountain bike. It's good to keep an eye out for each other.

And what about pointing the gun at him and escorting him to his car and off your property would prevent him from being caught?

You can still call the police to report a suspicious person even after you do this.

It isn't going to help him get caught any more than just telling him to leave.

I personally wouldn't brandish a gun and then tell someone to leave. If I brandish a gun I'll be telling them to lay down. It is a very serious thing to do and it will result in a charge if you don't have very good reason to do so. You do not have any right to pull a gun on every person who steps foot in your yard.

I agree. Don't get me wrong; I'm all for people defending themselves. I just wouldn't want anyone here to do something stupid and get hurt, killed, or charged with a crime. It seems like there is a very fine line between protecting yourself and being a criminal.

this is nothing new.

i've known plenty of people to have their cars broken into while parked on kaplan at hunter's club dr. across from those apartments.


funny thing is i live off hillsborough near campus, and often leave my old car unlocked.

numerous times i have had my spare change cleaned out, but ipod/cd/player/etc. left untouched. . .

i now prefer bums to gangsters anyday.
