how is my electric fence "inhumane" but giving the dog the needle a better alternative?

you got cows?
5/13/2008 9:31:11 AM
no, a buried line and collar for the dog

the dog i was TRYING to adopt has heartworms for heavens sake...how does it make sense to turn away someone who's willing to pay for that expensive treatment because of an electric fence? anyone know of any less stupid shelters? or of any available puppies? no, i haven't checked CL yet
5/13/2008 9:34:04 AM
you should try cl
5/13/2008 9:35:22 AM
^i hate you so much
5/13/2008 9:36:05 AM
wow that makes no sense. they ARE going to kill it right?next time don't tell em (or whoever it is) about the fence. its just that simple.
5/13/2008 9:36:06 AM
look for independent adoption places
5/13/2008 9:36:41 AM
They're a bit ridiculous with some of their adoption criteria
5/13/2008 9:37:43 AM
^^^ yes, they are...she was a stray, and she's been there for a while since very few people want to adopt a heartworm dog (for obvious reasons)...i didn't think the fence would be an issue (though i should have known)^^ know of any off the top of your head?[Edited on May 13, 2008 at 9:38 AM. 5/13/2008 9:38:03 AM
did you ask them how killing the dog was more humane than the fence?
5/13/2008 9:40:14 AM
hah, yes...i made a small scene...all they kept saying was that it was their policy to decline people with electric fences since the SPCA has dubbed them as "inhumane"nutjobs
5/13/2008 9:41:02 AM
Man my dog is so funny with the invisible fence. He knows it is there so he usually doesn't go within like 5 or so feet of it. But every now and then a random neighborhood dog will get loose and be running around outside. My dog will get so excited that he just HAS to go play with the other dog. He'll get a running start and just run as fast as he can through the invisible fence. Then he lets out a loud yelp as he gets shocked but just keeps running until he is all the way through. Then he plays with the other dog .

my cousin had 2 puppies show up at his house....he already had dogs so he brought one to me...sweetest little puppy but he really needed medical attention....he was covered in fleas and mange...and i didn't have the money at the time to pay for the vet visit and shots and everything all at once...i also had to keep him in a pen outside when i went to work and he would bark and wake up all the neighbors after i left and end up getting out of the pen everyday....i just didn't have the time or money to provide the attention and care that he needed so I took him to the SPCA...the bitch at the front said "Where did this dog come from?" i told her...she says "Take it back to Wilson...we don't take dogs found in other counties." i said "you're the SPCA...aren't you supposed to help find homes for dogs like this?...she says "This dog is in need of medical attention....you can leave it here and we will euthanize it by the end of the day....if you want it to live take it to the Wake Co. Animal Shelter...they'll take anything"so basically i told her she was a horrible person and that i hope their building burned down and all the animals that they were going to kill escaped and made it to the WCAS where people actually gave a shit about animals...
5/13/2008 9:44:12 AM
that's stupid. what, should you just keep it cooped up in a kennel all day? or better yet, let it roam free and get run over by cars?sheesh, some people are DUMB.
5/13/2008 9:50:21 AM
humane/inhumaneYou guys realize you're talking about a non-human species, right?Additionally, a needle, painlessly killing the death sentenced dog is indeed more "humane" than an electric fence you yoyo.
5/13/2008 9:51:11 AM
^ +1
5/13/2008 9:52:33 AM
If a dog is trained properly with an electric fence it will likely never even be shocked...the preliminary beep is often enough of a deterrent.....
5/13/2008 9:53:04 AM
i have an electric wireless fence for my dog. it works perfectly. he has only been shocked 4 or 5 times total and has gotten the point.I have the type that keeps shocking them until they come back inside of the radius.

A shock collar isn't a bad option either. they make some with 1/2 mile ranges that are waterproof and shockproof. most have a warning mode like a vibration or loud beep that you can use to preempt the shock. after a couple rounds of that, you can often just pick up a phone or something that resembles the sock remote and your dog will know you mean business

I used to volunteer at the Wake SPCA back when it was on 70. I agree, they are WAY too strict with their rules. The electric fence IMO is not the best option but vs. putting her down it's a great option. I know one time they euthanized pit bull puppies just because there's potential for them to be used for fighting.
^that's the SPCA I went to
5/13/2008 10:00:39 AM
^^ i (technically) STILL volunteer there (the new one off tryon), but it's for the evening play/walk times, so i was never aware of their actual adoption policies (i literally just showed up twice a week every week to make sure the dogs got 15-30 minutes of playtime before going to bed for the night)agreed, an electric fence isn't the BEST solution, but it's the one i'm with right now...i'd like to put up a fence eventually, but i just don't have time to do it right now[Edited on May 13, 2008 at 10:01 AM. ^^^Yeah it's pretty sad....there was a raid a while back where some idiot had a shit ton of pit bulls that he was selling / fighting. They put every one of them down, including puppies, because they had been "predisposed" to aggressive behavior.[Edited on May 13, 2008 at 10:03 AM. Reason : ^^^]

Hey, guess what! Jackasses are responsible for a great number of strays and otherwise unwanted pets. If you want to save all the puppies in the world, good luck. Some of these animals have to be euthanized. If you have ten billion dollars to build happy fun infinite puppy playland then go ahead. In the meantime, welcome to the real world of reasonable alternatives to having diseased animals running all over the place.
my new house is 5 minutes walking distance from a dog park...i take my current dog there or to the lake for a walk 5 out of 7 days every week (i did that when i lived in my apartment, too)...add to that the fact that they aren't going to be crated all day while i'm gone, and that my girlfriend is there for a lot of the day while i'm out and my roommate plays with my current dog all the timeseriously, this is NOT a bad environment for a dog

I am all for being humane to animals. But I've never heard of someone calling one of those underground electric fences inhumane. All the dogs I've seen that have one learn really quickly to not go near it.
5/13/2008 10:26:06 AM
5/13/2008 10:28:13 AM
I know right, whats a day or so worth of shocks to learn you can't do something. If it's so humane, would you attach one of these to a child to teach it where it can and can't go?

^^ Wake SPCA uses Euthanol (so the needle not gas), at least when I was there they did. It's difficult to be there when they lead the dogs back to the room to do it and you wonder if it was because it really has to be done or not.[Edited on May 13, 2008 at 10:33 AM. Reason : damn]

Children are smarter then dogs. If you tell a child not to do something and take away their toys/cartoons/whatever if they disobey you, they will eventually listen to you. A dog's brain doesn't work the same way.
