I don't get how any PE or PRT could be considered pretentious.

I see a pretentious as a psychology major who thinks he knows everything about the human mind now, or an english major who thinks he knows everything about literature, or an engineering major that thinks that because his major is harder than others it's automatically and universally better than others.

Pretentious or useless? I have a degree in English Literature that I knew full well that I wasn't going to use. That's not why I got it. I fully acknowledge that it's not very useful in a real world sense to know a lot about books and literary theory, but I don't think it's pretentious either.

I don't think the degree itself can be pretentious, just the people. Now, it is a given that a lot of pretentious dickholes gravitate towards certain majors like Art History, Philosophy (usually pretentious or weird, sometimes both), Film, ______ Theory, and Sociology (holier than though type of pretentiousness). Again, many of these have very limited real world application but there's nothing wrong with knowledge for knowledge's sake.

Pretentious and useless would be something like a Masters in Women's Studies, or a PhD in Sociology.

I agree, I had the same approach to history and have never used it myself, but I learned so much that it did change my life.

As for philosophy/psychology majors... I've seen people taking undergraduate degrees in those fields and turning them into something tangible and useful in post-graduate studies. EMCE now has an excellent job indirectly related to his undergraduate studies.

One of my friends got his undergrad in Psych. I'm not sure exactly what he's doing now or if it's directly related (he led me to believe that in order to really utilize a degree in a psych related field you need at least a masters) but he's constantly posting picks from around the world so I guess it's pretty cool whatever it is.

I didn't look at college as a place to earn a piece of paper that says, "qualified for job in field X." I almost did, but I switched out of Biological Engineering and later out of Chem, not because they were too hard, but because it fucking bored me to tears.

My problem with PoliSci majors, and I'm sure State isn't the only place like this, is they tend to talk only to people who think exactly like them on political issues. So when you get into the classroom it's RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE for the entire session with nothing thought provoking or even that original said. That was one thing that annoyed me about a lot of the classes at State.

No no, not Psychology. Many hard-working psychology students are well aware that we are going to sell our souls and morals to the highest bidder and drug up kids or put people through human resources hell for the rest of our days.
SOCIAL WORK for the LOSE. THOSE pretentious dicks are a bunch of self-sacrificing emo kids who think they're better than everyone else because they're giving in to their martyr complexes by working with "under-privelidged people" who aren't going to change or get better. EVER. Sure, you might get one or two success stories for every eight or nine crack addicts who can't break the habit. They all turn into asshole adults who hate themselves for having any money, hate anyone who is successful, and turn into a walking score of Rent. Fuck THAT shit.

^Now that I'm trying to start my own business, I certainly wish I had done it in college. I'll probably have to look up syllabi at State to find recommended/mandatory reading lists and buy them at half.com. Won't get the benefit of lectures though.
