So I'm sitting here at work going through a basic example of a welded connection. As I go through the calculation it lists (phi)Rn=1.392(3) = 4.17 k/in ; this stems from the AISC manual of 1.392*number of 16th's of an inch*length. Ok...Then they go on to do this fuzzy bit (it's right, just dumb)Pu/(phi)Rn=200k/(4.17k/in) giving 48 inches. Sure this is right based on some stupid logic, but it can much easily be done by...(phi)Rn=1.392*3*L then substituting into the always true...(phi)Rn>=Puknowing Pu and substituting the lenght is obtained. WOW I hate AISC sometimes...Not to mention their example is a terrible example of wasted material and labor...You continue to verify the length just obtained to find out it's too short. Then AISC just says try 27 inches instead of 24 (each side 24*2=48) This solution is accurate, but the minimalistic solution is 26. You might as well just skip that whole fuzzy math first part and guess wildly if you're going to be inefficient.wow that was more long winded than intentioned

I thought this was about fuzzy logic. An actual difficult subject.

fuzzy math is what stores use to confuse peoplelike get 2 for the price of 1 except you'll get the 1 for the price of 2

haha, i didn't think anyone would respond to this lol
