6/22/2008 9:34:20 PM
send them important files
6/22/2008 9:34:59 PM
they dont do a lot, just a little web surfing. probably email. and they cant do anything too crazy without being haker enough to get in in the first place, so i think i'll continue my free ISP
6/22/2008 9:35:10 PM
THATS HOW IT STARTS
6/22/2008 9:38:07 PM

6/22/2008 9:40:40 PM
At least block like child porn sites and stuff, because youre responsible if they are pervs or idiots.
6/22/2008 9:41:17 PM

6/22/2008 9:42:20 PM
6/22/2008 9:48:18 PM

6/22/2008 9:49:13 PM

6/22/2008 9:50:46 PM
i think it was just unattended computers (except for one) hopping around, cause i changed my SSID to StealFromTravis and its just me again.
6/22/2008 9:52:45 PM
6/22/2008 9:53:44 PM
how do you see whos on your network?mine is open and i think ppl use it so when i leave town for a few days sometimes i'll just unplug it
6/22/2008 10:46:32 PM
what kind of router do you have?
6/22/2008 10:54:22 PM
netgear is the brand and thats all i knowmy bf from back in the day day bought it for me... so its like...5 years old i think
6/22/2008 10:55:19 PM
im sure its in the settings somewhere.. on linksys ones there's a status page where you can see everyone connected
6/22/2008 10:56:24 PM
^^ read the manual trollop
6/22/2008 11:01:47 PM
ahahahahahaseriouslynoi'll just get a guy to do it for me
6/22/2008 11:04:55 PM
yepour "guest" network stays openi also log all the traffic/ARP tables in case someone looks at child porn or something(probably wouldn't hold up in court but at least it's more than nothing)
6/22/2008 11:23:29 PM
^ what do you mean by "log the traffic" because depending on what you're logging, you may be doing something illegal (or that you could at least be sued for in our great country).
6/22/2008 11:25:34 PM
they are using my networki pay for itthey don't have to use iti don't see how that could possibly be illegal in any way[Edited on June 22, 2008 at 11:27 PM. Reason : p.s. it logs the arp table plus the origin/destination/port of all traffic w/ timestamps ]
6/22/2008 11:26:38 PM
Do you make them click through a usage agreement?Because if not, that's like if I set up a fake ATM machine, but don't tell anyone. Which i'm pretty sure is illegal...[Edited on June 22, 2008 at 11:27 PM. Reason : v]
6/22/2008 11:27:44 PM
i don't log contenti also don't advertise it as a secure serviceif you set up a fake ATM, you would be defrauding peoplei am doing nothing of the sortyou would be advertising a service that you did not offeri am making no promises, no guarantees, and no statements about the quality of service nor what the service providestherefore i am not held to any certain standard
6/22/2008 11:29:38 PM
i guess the only thing you have to worry about is what a reasonable (not tech savvy) person would think using your access point thats really what would hold up
[Edited on June 22, 2008 at 11:35 PM. Reason : added the word person
6/22/2008 11:33:53 PM
Considering URL may contain "private" information, you should probably even only log time stamps of URl accesses. But, in the same vein as people who have failed to use the "but it wasn't me, my wireless network is open" defense, i would bet that if someone's identity was stolen that used your network, or if someone hacked your logs and stole someone's identity, you'd be facing a lot of heat.
6/22/2008 11:34:50 PM
lolfinei'll put up a captive portal and make them clickthrough an agreementCYA son... although i highly doubt anything would ever come of itand it doesn't log the URIs, just the IPs... granted, that's not really any better... but still[Edited on June 22, 2008 at 11:37 PM. Reason : also the logs are encrypted and only travel over my wired network][Edited on June 22, 2008 at 11:37 PM. Reason : someone would really have to be dedicated to get them]
6/22/2008 11:36:39 PM
I just did the same and named it "Free wireless internet"let's see what happens....[Edited on June 23, 2008 at 12:53 AM. Reason : 2]

actually, it's illegal to allow other people onto your wireless network and it's illegal for them to be on a wireless network that they do not belong on.the law isn't really enforced (it has been in a few cases though).
6/23/2008 6:05:31 AM
6/23/2008 11:35:28 AM

6/23/2008 11:40:46 AM
i mean im not trying to sound smart, or especially cockybut talk to me about whats what after youve spent some time in superior court on the stand and shit, called in retired naval IT security guys, experts in computer forensics, etc etc etc. talk to me then!!]
6/23/2008 11:43:34 AM
The GBI busted in on my parents a few weeks ago for something unsecured wireless-related involving child porn.
6/23/2008 11:49:15 AM
i was impressed when i opened up netstumbler at my new placethere were no open APs
6/23/2008 12:07:39 PM

6/23/2008 12:09:48 PM
damn, thats wild... its also georgia (right?) too... i'm just up to date with NC law since i live and operate here
6/23/2008 12:10:56 PM
Yes. Apparently people drive around in vans looking for unsecured connections and then ... uh, do whatever they do with posting child porn, I don't really know.
6/23/2008 12:12:21 PM
lol
6/23/2008 12:13:32 PM
see if they have shared printers and then print fun stuff out on them.
6/23/2008 12:14:10 PM
yeah i dont know specifically for child porn... but that would be the idea for most bad shit. find the connection, then just send what needs to be sent.i just allow light browsing, im kinda a proxy server. even for myself, i connect to my network from outside and then surf. like from work. so work doesnt know i use the net etc
6/23/2008 12:14:19 PM
And FYI they didn't get in trouble or anything, so you can't really get punished if someone does that. But if you aren't home they might break down your door.
6/23/2008 12:14:25 PM
shaggy have you used Nnagent? its cool, it lets you know when someone is walkign by with an itouch or ipod. i found it as an offlink when reading about the throttle detection thing google is putting out somedayalso when RR sends reset hax at ur torrenter ^guarantee my house/car/nose is cleaner than any cops. im never going to court again, ever. but i do appreciate the heads up.... doors arent that cheap ]
6/23/2008 12:15:36 PM
you should set any connected computer's download limit to a 10kb/s maximum transfer rate
