If it is, say, January 17 today and this year is a leap year, what would it would be 1 year from now?

Better yet, on January 17 of the following year would you say "it has been 1 year and 1 day since we had that conversation"? No, you would say "it has been 1 year".

Same as when people say "exactly 1 month later", "exactly 1 month ago", etc, they are talking about the SAME DATE, even though sometimes that might mean 30 days have been elapsed, sometimes 31, and somethimes 28 or 29.
