I'm not a huge Boss fan, but I absolutely love "The Promised Land."

With that said, I might like the Sleater-Kinney version more.

I'd like to hear the Dead's version.

And truthfully, I think this is an unanswerable question.

Bruce is up there with Jim Morrison and John Lennon in my musical influences. If I were to blaspheme rock itself by insisting I liked his version better than Chuck Berry's, it'd feel just as heretical.

The comparison I always use when it comes to frontmen is as follows:

If Sammy Hagar were to walk into a bar, he'd probably buy everyone drinks, sit down, and have a nice conversation about whatever you felt like talking about.

If David Lee Roth walked into the same bar, he'd laugh at everyone, grab the two hottest chicks, and hit the road.

That's why David Lee Roth is a great frontman, and Sammy Hagar is not. He's got the swagger. You don't have to have a ton of natural singing talent to be a great frontman, but you do have to be charismatic. Talent helps, of course.

As far as Morrison goes, he had tons of charisma. A lot of it was charisma of the idiotic variety (the pratfalls), but as a handsome man who could put on a show, he was a quality frontman. He wasn't a terrible singer, so that was a bonus.

However, this idea that Morrison was a poet or had anything significant to say at all is the biggest load of crap in the history of the legitimate (read: not Milli Vanilli) music business. Dylan is a poet. Springsteen is a poet. Berry is a poet. Morrison was a handsome drunk in a decent band.

i love how many of the bruce haters (not specifically on tww) base their opinions solely on Born in the USA, a song that the boss himself doesn't very much care for.

The boss is deep and his songs are even deeper. His style is all his own and the guy is a genuine fucking badass
