by Chuck BerryVS"The Promised Land" by Bruce SpringsteenDISCUSSI say they're equal, Springsteen says Berry's is better.

dead did it best
7/5/2008 4:22:37 PM
bruce springstein is one of the most over rated musicians of all time
7/5/2008 4:23:06 PM
I've never really liked anything of Springsteen's. Plus, Berry's version evokes more of a response in me.
7/5/2008 4:23:15 PM
I'm not a huge Boss fan, but I absolutely love "The Promised Land."With that said, I might like the Sleater-Kinney version more.
7/5/2008 4:27:59 PM
springsteen beats the fuck out of the pansy rock most of you kids listen toOMF HAVE YOU HEARD OF "ROTTEN TOMATO GOLF CLUBS?"
7/5/2008 8:39:34 PM
Because, you know, the guy who invented modern guitar-based rock 'n' roll is a pansy. ]
7/6/2008 9:19:12 PM
because, you know, he specifically stated "chuck berry"? ]
7/6/2008 9:20:03 PM
Springsteen is unlisten-to-able.
7/6/2008 9:20:31 PM
^^ the topic of the thread is springsteen vs. berry
7/6/2008 9:21:43 PM
and?doesnt change the fact that he didnt specifically say chuck berryi'm guessing he said what he said cause of what me and chembob said[Edited on July 6, 2008 at 9:23 PM. Reason : and not to mention he said "most of you kids"...not ALL...]
7/6/2008 9:22:41 PM
Make no mistake.Chuck Berry's the man.I'm working in a cover of Johnny B. Goode as a salute.Hating on Springsteen has become a fashion I hold a little vendetta against considering the sheer awesomeness of his works, dedication to the art, and conscience.
7/6/2008 9:25:08 PM
i thought this was about
7/6/2008 9:26:39 PM
I loves me some Springsteen.Someone needs to find a bootleg of the Springsteen's original band backing up Chuck Berry at a gig in Jersey.
7/6/2008 9:27:54 PM
i think i heard the song he did for the movie philidelphia once....didnt it win an oscar or something for best soundtrack song? i distinctly remember myself liking it iirc
7/6/2008 9:31:34 PM
I'd like to hear the Dead's version. And truthfully, I think this is an unanswerable question.Bruce is up there with Jim Morrison and John Lennon in my musical influences. If I were to blaspheme rock itself by insisting I liked his version better than Chuck Berry's, it'd feel just as heretical.
7/6/2008 9:36:20 PM
It's not the same song, btw. They just have essentially the same title. Also, Jim Morrison was a talentless douchebag.
7/6/2008 9:37:23 PM
Opinions are spectacular.
7/6/2008 9:38:47 PM
Decent frontman. No talent.I'm off to work, we'll pick this up tomorrow. ]
7/6/2008 9:39:14 PM
I'll grant the douchebag assessment.I look forward to the explanation of talentless. And what separates those who can be frontmen from those who can't.
7/6/2008 9:44:59 PM
The comparison I always use when it comes to frontmen is as follows:If Sammy Hagar were to walk into a bar, he'd probably buy everyone drinks, sit down, and have a nice conversation about whatever you felt like talking about. If David Lee Roth walked into the same bar, he'd laugh at everyone, grab the two hottest chicks, and hit the road. That's why David Lee Roth is a great frontman, and Sammy Hagar is not. He's got the swagger. You don't have to have a ton of natural singing talent to be a great frontman, but you do have to be charismatic. Talent helps, of course. As far as Morrison goes, he had tons of charisma. A lot of it was charisma of the idiotic variety (the pratfalls), but as a handsome man who could put on a show, he was a quality frontman. He wasn't a terrible singer, so that was a bonus. However, this idea that Morrison was a poet or had anything significant to say at all is the biggest load of crap in the history of the legitimate (read: not Milli Vanilli) music business. Dylan is a poet. Springsteen is a poet. Berry is a poet. Morrison was a handsome drunk in a decent band.
7/7/2008 2:19:19 PM
Lol, listen to the armchair quarterback of music here. "Morrison was OKAY"...
7/7/2008 2:22:06 PM

"Nebraska" ftwThe Doors ftl
7/7/2008 2:24:34 PM
^ Yes.I have three copies of Nebraska.I have one Doors singles CD that I'll begrudgingly play something from for a decent tip.

oh snapit's major dador simonor just gerald
7/7/2008 2:32:39 PM
i love how many of the bruce haters (not specifically on tww) base their opinions solely on Born in the USA, a song that the boss himself doesn't very much care for. The boss is deep and his songs are even deeper. His style is all his own and the guy is a genuine fucking badass
7/7/2008 2:33:03 PM
the original acoustic version of "born in the usa" is fucking intense as shitalso, "johnny 99" ftw ]
7/7/2008 2:35:03 PM
YES I'M SO GLAD THE PICTURE OF THIS SHOW WAS POSTED!!!!for like a million years i was trying to think of the name of this show. i kept describing it to tschudi as "a show like 7th heaven but not." oh CBS, you always know how to rock.and to respond to the OP: i am partial to chuck berry. but i do agree with the sentiments about brucey. he's the most underrated overrated musician.[Edited on July 7, 2008 at 3:12 PM. Reason : .]
7/7/2008 3:10:15 PM
there's an extra bit of sentimentality with the berry songbecause he mentions raleigh
7/7/2008 3:13:43 PM
and because he does an awesome run run rudolph
7/7/2008 3:15:59 PM
7/7/2008 3:42:24 PM

7/7/2008 3:47:05 PM
lol, An RV would be too baller. I distinctly remember them having a Suburban and a tow behind camper.
7/7/2008 3:49:42 PM
i distinctly remember reading that on imdb too.
7/7/2008 4:00:10 PM
what i read looked like"i didn't like Jim's poetry so it's not poetry"some say the same for e.e. cummings*shrug*againspectacular and articulate opinion you've got therewholeheartedly disagree
7/7/2008 4:41:40 PM

^^^ soul kitchen is a great songand X is cool, too...plus, without them, RHCP wouldn't have been able to sample "White Girl" in "Good Time Boys", and Robert Earl Keen, Jr couldn't have covered "4th Of July".
7/7/2008 6:02:43 PM
this thread is bringing folks from all walks togetherfo shoperhaps "promised land" is the best possible title for this thread
