1) While profits may be at a 'record', the profits/revenue is about at 10%. Lower than CBS was last quarter. So when you hear these huge numbers, dont be fooled. They have an insane number of sales. Thats why it sounds so ridiculous.2) There are huge barriers to entry in the oil business. Thats why Joe down the street isnt opening an oil company to drive down the prices. They, just like any other business, are in an oligopoly and are out to make money. You dont hear people screaming when Callaway charges 800 dollars for a set of golf clubs or when you order a pizza for 15 bucks. Everyone is out to make money. Its the real world, welcome.3) The US doesnt have that big of an effect. China has over a billion people. India has over a billion people. Theyre both going through industrial revolutions of sort. They suck up a lot of gas. 4) Our taxes are at about 40 cents per gallon. Not that much compared to other places where the pigouvian taxes on gas are much higher. The majority of economists want an increased gas tax. It would be the most direct and immediate way to move forward. We would want more fuel efficient cars. There would be more incentive for car companies to produce them. We would devote more resources towards the most efficient means for energy. NOT ethanol or whatever else the government wants. Which is more polluting than gas, can barely survive with huge subsidies and has drive the price of food up.So, in short, stop complaining and wake upAlso, the futures price of oil has dropped a relatively considerable amount in the last couple days
