i'm never doing canned vegetables again, but i'm not sure about the proper way to cook raw veggies. i mostly cook fresh ones with whatever type of meat i'm eating (in the same pan) or I just put veggies on a small pan with olive oil and butter. canned veggies i used to cook them in a pot over a stove.

those ziploc steamable bags are amazing. it's one of my favorite ways to cook veggies anyhow- and they make the cleanup process that much better. I also stir-fry vegetables a lot- or throw them in the pot with some pasta I'm cooking.

hmmm...what would happen if i put a regular ziplock bag with veggies in a pot of water?

The standard way of fixing veggies in the south is boiling. You can use chicken or beef broth. You can use a little salt and olive oil/butter. You can cook a slice of bacon or other seasoning meat in the bottom of the pot and then add water and veggies etc. Steaming is going to be the easiest and healthiest way to fix them. But there are some vegetables that you're going to want to boil.[Edited on July 29, 2008 at 8:38 AM. Reason : meet =/= meat]

BOTTOMBABY (no homo). i think that's why i never got into veggies is cause they were normally boiled, which doesn't make any sense actually.i normally cook my veggies with whatever meat i'm cooking, but recently it dawned on me how bad canned veggies totally suck. i shaved an ear of corn off with a knife and sauteed in butter and olive oil and it was delicious. did the same with okra. tremendous results, but this steamer thing seems awesome.how does it work?
