Say you're unemployed and looking around for a new job. A good friend from college just starting working for a firm on St. Thomas. He says he can get you a decent position within the company and needs a roommate for his beach front apt. He says the job would be at minimum a 1 year contract and would pay around $60-70k.I'm in the middle of moving back from NYC to NC (to look for jobs in Raleigh) but this is a tempting offer. I have no girlfriend to worry about, no apartment lease, no car payments. Only thing is I told him I have to be able to bring my dog.How seriously would you consider this and would you do it?
7/30/2008 12:11:26 AM
if u have no immediate plans then do it
7/30/2008 12:12:15 AM
fuck yesaha i hear you were looking for me earlier
7/30/2008 12:12:35 AM
could you bring your dog? does that work?if you could bring your dog, then yes. why not really. its a job. its only a year. i guess you have to decide if it'd be worth it in terms of your long term career goals. but if it isn't going to set you back, then why not.
7/30/2008 12:12:42 AM
Sounds like a plan !I'm hoping to spend a year or 3 at one of our offices in the Lesser Antilles myself
7/30/2008 12:13:23 AM
if there's no catch and the job doesn't totally suck, that contract would've been signed yesterday.
7/30/2008 12:13:26 AM
I'm worried about long term career goals, as well as getting back to being closer to friends and family. I was in NYC for 3 years so didn't see a lot of them as often.Oh the other hand, I spent a week in Hawaii and fell in love with the underwater marine life. If I lived in the virgin islands I could go snorkling and SCUBA diving all the time, not to mention work on my surfing (they have decent waves there?)Only things are my buddy told me that electricity and water are ridiculously expensive, like $0.14/kWh for electricity.Yeah Saps, I was looking for you earlier[Edited on July 30, 2008 at 12:17 AM. Reason : k]
7/30/2008 12:15:28 AM
if you don't go maybe I should
7/30/2008 12:15:32 AM
if you don't have longterm goals you're working towards, and nothing really keeping you on the mainland, go for itif you're wanting to work on whatever your career is, and this isn't it, probably not a good idea
7/30/2008 1:19:58 AM
oh fuck yesI have a bf and a cat I love dearly. I'd still do it.[Edited on July 30, 2008 at 1:22 AM. Reason : ^lol the bf...that's the one ]
7/30/2008 1:21:23 AM
why are you making threads about this on TWW? you should be packing up!Seriously, this sounds like a once in a lifetime offer. You get to go to a tropical paradise and you still make decent money. Sounds like a no brainer to me.
7/30/2008 1:22:03 AM
Well as a matter of fact I have been packing. Movers are coming to get my stuff on August 3rd. Its going into storage in Raleigh after that. All I'll have with me are my clothes after that. The apt my buddy has down there is fully furnished so I shouldn't need anything. What I want to do career-wise long term is a big deciding factor. From a lifestyle point of view I feel like I've been floating around NYC for 3 years (lived 5 different places) and I was looking for some permanency moving back to Raleigh. If I went to St. Thomas I wouldn't have that feeling. On the other hand its a once in a lifetime opportunity (just as going to NYC was).ugh, I don't know what to do.
7/30/2008 1:24:48 AM
if you're not settled, head there; you might settle therewith no gf/job/career/kids/family really keeping you in raleigh/elsewhere, why not head somewhere for a year or so?[Edited on July 30, 2008 at 1:27 AM. Reason : unless you're wanting to grow roots]
7/30/2008 1:26:30 AM
Is the sense of permanency really all that important?
DUDE GOyou are young. you have nothing to tie you down. GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO
7/30/2008 1:28:31 AM
go.without question.go, now.
7/30/2008 2:01:55 AM

7/30/2008 2:25:06 AM
7/30/2008 2:35:27 AM
what kinda job is it?
7/30/2008 3:44:35 AM
Umm Buh-bye.....for a year (hopefully you guys make it through hurricane season)..but for a year..and the weak economy in the U.S.. 'To hell with NC'....what would u be doing exactly?
7/30/2008 4:54:37 AM
Worthless without pics.Hmm.
7/30/2008 5:26:25 AM
7/30/2008 7:28:06 AM
it'd be an awesome experience. even I would do it.
7/30/2008 7:37:59 AM
its 60-70k to spend a year in paradise...........why is this difficult?
7/30/2008 7:43:37 AM
yeah why did tww need to be involved...if you don't take it ask your friend if he needs any engineers cause i'd be more than happy to go..I'm also decent at finance even though i don't have a degree in it ( once you know math the concepts aren't hard )
7/30/2008 7:46:41 AM
7/30/2008 7:46:49 AM
I would definitely take advantage of that. It's only a year, and you have the rest of your life to work on your career advancement. You may regret it if you don't go
7/30/2008 7:50:31 AM
7/30/2008 7:54:35 AM
If you buy something there i have a friend that can hook you up with solar/wind power hahaha
7/30/2008 7:55:59 AM
This shouldn't even be a debate. Go!It's one year...it'll fly bye. It's not like you're moving to India where it takes forever to get back to the US. You could come home for weekends easily....if you even wanted to.
7/30/2008 7:58:10 AM
7/30/2008 8:53:24 AM

Hey Pat,
7/30/2008 9:04:40 AM
i'd do it and i don't even like the beach.
7/30/2008 9:05:29 AM
Okay, so I'm looking more deeply into this. My friend's cousin owns the company so I have an in. The company is internet advertising and the position would be account analysis and management. I'm gonna send him my resume today. I have no experience in these areas but they offer complete training. They're just looking for smart competent people.

7/30/2008 12:30:22 PM
7/30/2008 12:33:32 PM
most people pay 1000s of dollars just to visit that place for a few days. You're getting paid $60-70K to live in one of the most beautiful places on the planet.I'd jump all over it
7/30/2008 12:33:41 PM
7/30/2008 12:35:38 PM
^^^well my buddy who took the job with that company just graduated a few months ago with a medical degree in pharmocolgy and toxicology and he's already said he'll probably never go back to the medical field. That sounds pretty crazy in its own right.^well played, Drod. I think you just want me to move there so you can come visit![Edited on July 30, 2008 at 12:36 PM. Reason : ^]
7/30/2008 12:35:50 PM
FUCK YEAH GO PAT!!! its a no brainer. plus if you are splitting the power bill it won't be too bay if you are pulling $60-70k a year. i'm coming to visit too!! the year will be gone before you know it.
7/30/2008 1:11:03 PM
in a word - YES
7/30/2008 1:12:30 PM
it's only a year...fuck yeah you should do that.
7/30/2008 1:14:47 PM
Fuck St. Thomas...tell them it's St. Croix or nothing, bitches.
7/30/2008 1:26:39 PM
Both of the pics in this thread show Trunks Bay, which is actually on St. John's. Its only like a 10 min ferry ride to get to St. Johns though. Meagen's Bay is the place to go on St. Thomas.
7/30/2008 1:27:36 PM
the real question is . . .CAN YOU HANDLE PENG LI FOR A YEAR???
7/30/2008 1:33:22 PM
Don't listen to these retards on here. Just do what is in your heart. I wouldn't want to live down there to long thats just me though.
7/30/2008 1:48:18 PM
Move down there and buy an air mattress for all of your friends to sleep on when they visit!
