we are declining in population in the 1st world because we don't need to have a shotgun approach to survival. one or two replacements for the parents is good enough, we don't feel the need to make as many babies as possible because we are satisfied.

^^^^i know what you're talking about, but its an observed biological trait in animal societies where they will stop reproducing as much when certain conditions are met. This is why some European countries and China have an inverted population age distribution chart, that is, there are few young people compared to a lot more old people. As the population ages the many old people will have to be supported by a few young people. Although, China is kind of a forced population distribution, so it may be an exception.

2nd and 3rd world countries don't have the same standard of living conditions that 1st world countries enjoy, so they are still in the mindset of many babies = good/better for survival. There is a higher chance that some of these kids will die off due to these lower standards of living, so they make as many kids as possible to heighten the chances that their kids survive into adult hood, and as an added benefit these kids can care for their aging parents.

I learned this stuff in high school but cannot remember what exactly it is that triggers the change from positive reproduction to replacement
