hes on his way back from beijing I guess the olympics got him a little fired up. i don't expect him to enter the war but would not be surprised at all if he comes on like "to protect the sovereinty of a friendly nation we must intervene for democracy and freedom"

8/11/2008 5:28:39 PM
There was a decent story in the Wall Street Journal today that did a good job explaining (in admittedly broad strokes) what the conflict is about and why anyone in the West should care. But I don't have a link.
8/11/2008 5:28:53 PM
lots of cool porn comes from russia
8/11/2008 5:28:55 PM
well Russia is really big...they are also kind of gangster, and we kind of squashed our official beef with them in the last couple decadesGeorgia is supposedly one of the countries that adopted an American-like lifestyle when the USSR broke up...at least I've heard its the "most American" of all the countries that made up the former USSRSo Georgia is helping promote freedom and democracy, and Russia is a superpower in the G8]
8/11/2008 5:28:59 PM
well its unacceptable to threaten a democratic government in the 21st century
8/11/2008 5:29:34 PM
but completely acceptable to threaten every other kind of government
8/11/2008 5:35:09 PM
Georgia has a trans-national oil pipeline running through it - the second largest in the worldthrough it, all the oil from azerbaijan flows, and that's where most of the west gets its "russian" oil fromRussia wants to control Georgia, thus controlling the pipeline, thus controlling the west

I was thinking the same thing Chance. However on NPR today they were talking about how badly it would affect the US supply. I can't remember their justification though

^^^ I did some googling. Here's the dealThe pipeline doesn't run through Russia, it is through Georgia, but not the Ossetia region.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Baku_pipelines.svgIt also isn't even at full capacity and supply just yet, which indeed will be 1 million barrels per day. Here are some US crude consumption figureshttp://www.eia.doe.gov/basics/quickoil.html20,680,000 barrels/dayAt the moment, we aren't importing much of anything from the countries around the Caspian where this pipeline is transporting it's oil. As best I can tell, Azerbaijan is controlling the Caspian Sea fields, we get 57,000 barrels a day from them at the moment.Bottom line, the market knows whats up and isn't concerned yet. We would be concerned if Russia became extremely territorial hungry and tried to reclaim Georgia. I'd imagine we'd either go to war over this pipeline or work out some sort of deal, with Russia taking a nice slice of the pie with their racket.[Edited on August 13, 2008 at 5:25 PM. Reason : a]
