This has been passed down in my family, and it has to be the best soup you can imagine. Just thought I would share it with everyone. I made it today and I'll have enough to last for at least a week. I'm sure its very similiar to everyone else's soup, but it may be a little different. Enjoy! You need a SERIOUSLY large pot - we're talking cauldron size - takes about 4 hrs to cookYou'll need:3 lbs ground beef6 large cans of whole tomatoes5 cans of creamed style corn2 cans of green peas6 cans of great northern beans4 cans of lima beans5 large onions8 cans of diced potatoesDO NOT DRAIN ANY OF CANS - YOU'LL USE IT IN THE SOUP!Put the potatoes in the pot - add the ground beef (don't cook it first, just toss it in there) - then add your chopped up onions - add water until it covers the potatoes, beef, and onions - stir it until the beef is well mixed in the mixture - then add your green peas, northern beans, and lima beans to it - after all of this is in the pot, make sure theres about an inch of water covering the ingredients - you'll want to cook this on medium for about 2 hrs - until your potatoes are falling apart, onions are soft, and beans are soft - then you'll throw the tomatoes in a food processor, or blender - turn them into a puree' and toss em in the soup - add the corn after that - mix well, let it cook for another 2 hrs, but on a lower setting - you're going to have to stir it about every 5-10 mins, or its gonna stick, no matter what you try if anyone tries it, let me know - I have loved this soup since I was a child, hope someone else can oh, and you'll most likely freeze a bunch of it, thats what we do, and eat it for the next month or so[Edited on August 15, 2008 at 1:18 AM. 8/15/2008 1:47:05 AM
ithought this thread was about fermat or nueservrrate
8/15/2008 1:47:35 AM
I'm thinking like 5lbs beef + 3-5 lbs chicken for all them veggies.
8/15/2008 1:49:48 AM
yeah dude you gotta have chxn with all that tomato. it'll change your life man
8/15/2008 1:51:13 AM
eheh yeah I'm gonna try chicken in it one day - my grandmother wouldn't ever eat it with chicken though, so I had to make it with beef
8/15/2008 2:43:09 AM
thats just now how she cooked it?or did she have some objection to chicken in general? gramma's against chicken just doesn't compute
8/15/2008 3:09:51 AM
you kick my dog
8/15/2008 3:15:38 AM
yeah you have a basic brunswick stew recipe except with beef instead of chicken and some added beans.
8/15/2008 3:33:00 AM
^ okay so thats not brunswick stew then is it
8/15/2008 3:33:55 AM
All that is added to it is peas and great northern beans.I can add two ingredients to a buerre blanc and it's still a goddamned beurre blanc.
8/15/2008 3:37:08 AM
okay well if you add bacon to a fucin greasy ass burger and say i got it from BK its not a cheease burger its a whopper aint it
8/15/2008 3:44:49 AM
The Whopper doesn't come with bacon... so your example fails.
8/15/2008 3:45:28 AM
you are right it doesnt come with bacon.your bruswick stew doesnt come with the above ingreadiants...........SO ITS NOT BRUNSWICK STEW
8/15/2008 3:47:07 AM
but if you ADD bacon to a Whopper... it's a Whopper with bacon.
8/15/2008 3:48:21 AM
just like stew is a soup
8/15/2008 3:49:44 AM
Not actually. Stew refers to something broken down into small pieces and cooked at a low temperature, for an extended period of time in order to break down the ingredients. This includes items that are cooked in this way that are served in a way that is not in any way a soup. Though commonly the liquid is made into a sauce being that it contains a great deal of the flavor of the meat.Soup is simply a dish that is predominately liquid.

also, fuck stirring every 5-10 minutes for 4 hours
8/15/2008 7:29:30 AM
Pretty sure you just made a giant cauldron of beef stew
8/15/2008 7:30:04 AM
sounds like a city boy soup to me. a redneck would use:FRESHLY PICKED tomatoes, peas, beans, onions, potatoes, and make his own creamed corn. none of this canned bullshit
8/15/2008 7:37:32 AM
^ Also tr00, that's how my gramma rolls
8/15/2008 7:39:16 AM
my granny's vegetable soup is a ham bone, a bunch of tomato juice she canned herself from home grown tomatoes, and a bunch of home grown vegetables[Edited on August 15, 2008 at 7:41 AM. Reason : and no potatoes]
8/15/2008 7:41:38 AM
well the thing is, back in the day, we always used freshly picked vegetables - we grow our own, we jus didn't have a good summer, having barely any rain - I just put the canned veggies because most people don't pick their own - that and our tomatoes look horrible this year
8/15/2008 12:06:51 PM
Mrs. Fearnow's ftw
8/15/2008 12:08:48 PM
the brunswick stew i ate had okra in it
8/15/2008 12:12:42 PM
the arguing in this thread is world class
8/15/2008 2:31:59 PM
my mom has a recipe similar to this that she calls Gravy Train, except she doesn't put potatoes or beans in it and uses whole kernel corn. You spoon it over top of mashed potatoes. SOOOOO good.[Edited on August 15, 2008 at 2:34 PM. Reason : a]
8/15/2008 2:33:21 PM
im tryingto nom on that
8/15/2008 2:37:19 PM
shit, i need to ask her for that recipe and make that shit tonight. now i really want it. good comfort food
8/15/2008 2:39:06 PM
so my old roommate... she used to make this soupexcept she would just put the enormous pot (with a lid on it MAYBE) in the fridge taking up all of the god damned space for a week or moreand she almost certainly would never finish itso I hate this soup cause it stinks up the fridge and never gets eatenwant a better soup? broth with Czech liver balls
8/15/2008 2:40:46 PM
liver balls, you say?
8/15/2008 2:41:49 PM
yeah its a dumpling made with bread crumbs, eggs and minced liverprobably some onion in there tooyou drop into boiling broth and BAZING! former communist soup
8/15/2008 2:43:24 PM
you know what would make that soup even better (aside from using fresh ingredients)? dump in a pound or two barley. better mouth feel, chewiness, more filling, and healthier.
8/15/2008 2:55:34 PM
mmmm comfort food.I was hoping for some badass backwoods chili recipe or something (yes I'm aware it says "Redneck Soup", but still).Definitely fresh veggies instead of canned. And you don't have to grow your own, although that would be tastier and very redneck. It's good have a recipe like Brunswick on hand though and then to spice it up as you like: add in some good spices to taste, some green onions, celery, whole corn (instead of creamed), carrots, peppers... then put shredded cheese on top and have english muffins or plain bagels on the side. Mmm. Damn I'm ready for Fall.
