I have a round 2 interview with Company A this afternoon. I'm pretty confident they are going to offer me a job. It's a good salary and a good work environment, but i'm afraid the job itself would bore me to death. they use really old technology (like older than tww old) and would probably have little relevance to any further career paths.

I had a round 1 interview with Company B this morning. The interview went well but they were a little vague about when they were going to make a hiring decision. they use a cuttingest edge technology, which i have a good amount of experience with and is still pretty rare. so i doubt they even have many people to choose from. there was no talk of salary so i don't have that comparison to make.

I'd rather work for Company B but I have no idea where I stand with them. I got a good impression, but they didn't actually say anything concrete about being interested in me. if company A offers me a job today and company B offers me a job next week, i'd feel like a douche if i already accepted the A but end up bailing on them to take the B job. if A offers me the job today, what's the best way to say "give me a few days to see if another company i like more offers me a job." or even worse, if i tell company A to give me a few days they might get the impression that i'm not interested and pull the offer. and then if company B passes on me too, i still have no job and punchmonk murders me in my sleep. what say ye, tww?

Always lie unless there is something to be gained by telling the truth

Take Job A and act like it is the best thing that ever happened to you

If Job B passes, you stick

If Job B wants you, you're Carlos Boozer and Job A is the Cleveland Cavaliers

yeah, i agree here...it's a little bit douchey, but who cares?

1.) this is business, not a group hug session
2.) in this market, they can probably find someone else pretty easily (not to discount your abilities, but if they're using old tech, they can probably find someone who couldn't work at company B anyway)
3.) do what's best for you...if that's bailing on boring company A and going with exciting company B AND amna doesn't kill you, that's pretty awesome, right?

also, if the start date for company A is flexible, you could try pushing it back some in order to give you some breathing room if company B makes you an offer you really like

if you haven't already sent a follow up letter to co b, do it with a phone call instead. Try to feel them out a little bit and see if you can glean a little more info on the situation.

if after the phone call you are still hesitant and A makes an offer, go with A.

a job is better than no job.

your two options come down to hurting company A's feelings or your wife murdering you in your sleep....

is it always a bad idea to mention to company B that you've had an offer from company A? does that come off as pushy and manipulative or desirable?

Yep. Besides, the first three months at a company are somewhat of a trial period for both the employer and the employee. No harm done if you leave in that time period claiming that the job isn't a good fit for you.

i ended up getting an offer from company A, as i expected. i told him i wanted to think about it and i would let him know by monday, which he seemed to think was reasonable but i think he sensed that i wasn't completely stoked about the job. which i explained my hesitancy about using obsolete technology and he said they understood it was old and that they wanted to upgrade, but they didn't have the developer time b/c they already had a backlog of client requests

after that interview, i got a call from the recruiter for company B and they wanted me to come in for a technical interview tomorrow morning, which i don't expect to have any problems with and hopefully they'll make me an offer on the spot and i won't have to worry about taking the A job then ditching for B

thx for the feedback ppls

normally i would say go for A and if B shows more promise then jump ship and go to B.

but this last part makes me think you should go for B and not make it. therefore being jobless, having punchmonk murder you. this would then make me move back to that area so i can holla at punchmonk.

don't mess this up for me ken. you know this is what i've always wanted.

Is anyone else more interested in what the technologies are? I'm curious if company A is using shit as old as I was using at my last job. I bet it's Cobol, isn't it?

Yeah, seriously, take A and if B comes along with an offer, go ahead and take that. Just tell A that they made a very strong offer and that you have your family and debts to consider.

^^ hahah. a company i interviewed with last week (neither A or B) gave me some grief cus i said cobol was effectively obsolete b/c all 4 guys i were interviewing with started their careers with cobol.

company A is using a pre .net framework that they custom built and they build/generate line of business web apps using that framework + XSL transforms

company B is building a real-time stock data analysis platform using WPF and Silverlight

You have till monday to give A an answer. After the interview tomorrow with B, if you have a chance tell them you have an offer. Where I work, if we like you, that will motivate/hasten the decision to give an offer, or at least tell you honestly where you stand.

Hope B pans out tomorrow, but at least you have A as a fallback.

And if you get into Company B and they're all like "yo we need a college-age programming intern this summer", hit me up.
