Since Labor Day is just around the corner!

On another note, I'm looking at getting a Lone Wolf tree stand. Does anyone have any experience with these?

I think I will try to get home and kill me a deer or two this season. It's nice to have a freezer full of meat.

Sighted in my Savage 99, looking forward to using it this year. There is something about a lever gun and it should be quick in the woods.

Skipped dove season this year since it didn't open until the middle of September down here.

Checked out some of the land I might get to hunt this fall. If the early cool weather holds, hopefully they won't rut the week after the season closes like they did last year.

Killed a real nice 8 pt and three does on Wednesday and Thursday. That was a blast. Can't wait to throw it on the grill soon.

^ you don't need to buy an actual huntng lisence, but you have to get the big game tags and report your deer kills just like anyone else. It's in the NC hunting regs. Go to any store that sells hunting/ fishing lisences and they will hook you up. If your in Raleigh, go to the NCWRC headquarters building on centennial campus. They will tell you whatever you need to know and give you some tags.

Went hunting on saturday...first day of the season, first day I've ever hunted, in a buck only area, and the ONLY deer I saw was a buck...and I got him! 6 pt, but not that big.

Thanks so much!!! I live on the Outer Banks, so I went to the Alligator River Refuge. Saw 6 bear too, one was 500lbs at LEAST and was 100yrds away at first, then he went into the woods and came back out maybe 25 yrds away. It was amazing! I'm going to hunt Beaufort/Hyde Counties later this week.

Please disregard my borrowed (and crooked) hat and XXXL borrowed jacket, lol. I was appx 75 yrds away when he stepped out. Shot him unsupported, standing. Go me

Nice. I hunt on Fort Bragg, and my family has some property outside of Fayetteville. I would probably freak out if any bears showed up while I was in my stand, luckily there aren't any out that way. I hunted a couple of years before I shot anything, granted I only get to hunt between 10 and 15 times a season, but still, it didn't make it any easier when I didn't get anything.

I wasn't in a stand...I'm not sure if I would have felt safer or more confined in one with a bear coming around!

Wow, but still, going out 10 times without shooting anything? Was I really that lucky on my first attempt? Holy cow.

It really depends on where you are hunting. For example, on Fort Bragg, I won't see many deer, but when I do, theres a good chance it could be a really big buck, but on the private property my family hunts, there are a lot of deer, but the big ones are a little more difficult to come by.

It depends on the size of the land, habitat, deer population, etc.

You saw, and took a buck on your first hunting trip....that's pretty damn rare.

I should've gone this past weekend for opening day of gun season, but I stayed at State friday night to party. Woke up the next morning to great hunting conditions, and a text from my uncle saying he saw 6 and took a doe. Damn decisions.

Yeah when I say this was my first time, I really mean it. I didn't grow up around hunters, so I have a LOT to learn about tracking and behavior and stuff like that. I'm trying to pick up as much as I can but its only been 1 day lol.

I kinda figured that private property or areas with really strict regulations would have the larger bucks. The spot where I got my deer didn't allow hunting with dogs (thank goodness...much quieter haha) and was more remote then the first area I was in. It was HUGE though...no clue how many acres. I think I really just got super lucky that we crossed paths. Never saw another deer all day (not before, or after!).

Cool, yea I was fortunate enough to grow up around a couple of hunters (grandfather and uncle)...they never forced me out there, they never even asked me to go...I asked them. In my opinion, the best way to learn about tracking, looking for sign, etc is to go with people that know what they are doing. You can read al of the magazines and books you want, but there's something to be said about physically being out there and learning what to look for.

It's also a great time. Some of my fondest memories growing up are being in the woods with my uncle and grandfather, listening to them tell stories, etc.

I love climbing up in a tree before daylight when it is still dark, and then watching the sun rise, and watch as the woods come alive...good stuff.

and fresh air...don't forget how great it is to just be out in fresh air

my next goal is to figure out how I can bring my camera and successfully "shoot" wildlife images while I'm also shooting the wildlife lol

haha yea, fresh air is nice too.

I know they have mounting devices for rifles that hold small camcorders, but I'm assuming you want still photos.
I've brought my camera before, but would only try to take pictures of does/other deer I wasn't planning on shooting (with my rifle). But you never know when that buck is gonna pop out.

I'm thawing out some deer steaks right now to fry up tomorrow for dinner. mmmm

yeah, I meant a "real" camera. and that's what I was thinking...for any deer I wasn't going to shoot OR for any bear that happened to lumber by. The guy I'm going with tomorrow has also had a red wolf sneak up on him. I think that would be incredibly amazing to grab a shot (photograph, lmao) of one!! I'm not sure if we'll be in the same area as the wolves though.

^ you may look into video taping your hunts. I have gotten into that in the past few years and really ejoy it. I can now look back and watch hunts and experiences I had with friends over and over again. It is almost as fun to me as actually hunting. It is also really cool to be able to show family or friends that are non-hunters what hunting is all about. Do some research on tree-mount camera arms. It will allow you to attach your camera t a support that is mounted to the tree. That way you have both hands free to do whatever you need and can film at the same time. Here's some links that might interest you.

ATTN Hunters ITT:

Please come out and kill what must be the thousands of deer that are holed up around where the durham, chatham, and wake county lines meet. The last three days in a row, i've come within a few feet of slamming into a deer that jumped in front of me while driving to or from home.

Also, I've noticed that the Durham deer wear kevlar vests and may be packing as well. Be warned.

Deer hunting is boring to me, but I like squirrel hunting. I just cleaned up my .22 rifle so they won't be shelly like they are when you use small-shot. I also just got 2 nice beagle puppies I am training to be rabbit dogs.

pretty good season for me so far.

i shot 3 ealier this season with the bow and arrow, hit all three, only found one of them (6 pointer)

shot at, and unfortunately missed, a nice 8 during black powder.

videotaped my buddy shooting his first ever deer last weekend.

seen plenty of does, no shooting.

hunting in the big game hunt around my house the next two days in hopes of winning $1200.

i love this time of year!

^^just curious if you've ever had a big buck encounter, that adrenaline rush is like no other

^nice. it always sucks when you can't find one after hitting them, it happens a lot with a bow.
halloween-christmas is my favorite time of the year and i honestly think its from growing up deer hunting this time of year.

the first two week of November have historically been the best times to hunt where I do...I can't wait.

Was that piebald you saw off Holly Springs a 4-pointer? I have seen one several times on West Lake Road off of Ten-Ten. Evidently, it was a pretty regular thing a couple of months back, b/c people would be sitting on the side of the road filming it every night. We turned in the neighborhood beside that field one evening and it walked within 10 yards of my car with 6 other does.

anyone else hunt with a recurve? i use a 45# PSE mustang with carbons

anything at or under 20 yards is pretty much a straight shot...past that, i have to compensate for arcing, which i'm not especially good at in terms of hunting (i do just fine with targets, but i need a lot more practice if i'm going to hit a moving target and take arcing into account)...i've only taken 3 deer in my life, but only one with this bow (i hit a 6-point buck, but my dad is the one that actually killed it)...a doe is all i've ever killed with it

certainly nothing special, but knowing i can take and have taken down a deer with a recurve is a nice feeling, makes me feel MANLY (as does butchering it out myself)

had 2 very large doe run through my backyard yesterday when i got home from the office. it was the first time i'd ever seen them around my house, i see them down the road aways all the time (2 this morning) but never this close.

Hopefully i'll have some luck this year, it's been a dry couple of years in terms of deer.

Either a 4 or 6, it was dark out. It was mostly white, with almost all of its darker markings on its hind quarters.

Gun season starts Saturday down here, just haven't had the time to get out and scout for bow hunting so I had to pass on that one. It is actually cold this year, so hopefully they'll move. Last year they didn't rut until February.

I went this past weekend and brought my coworker. We had a good time. I shot a little cowhorn in the morning and he shot a nubbin' buck in the afternoon. (we thought both were does before shooting ) We spent Saturday night processing the meat. Cooking some of it up tonight!

I went Monday and Yesterday. Monday shot a button buck and yesterday I had a large doe just standing there and I get a good shot and "click" the gun is FUBAR'd. I was able to eject the round but the action is jammed opened.

I was a little late putting out feed this year, but i finally got everything out this week and got my stand and blinds set up. I'll probably sit in the blind tomorrow so hopefully i'll have some luck.

Didn't see as much marking this season as i did last year, but there has definitely been some traffic through my area lately. Hopefully i'll get lucky tomorrow, if not i'll give it a week and try again over thanksgiving.

I really need some new outerwear. my bibs are still in good condition, but my parka needs replaced bad.
