i had to get on a friend of mine for this at my old job. i was in a pair of slacks and pressed button down shirt, he was in a NCSU t-shirt and saggy jeans. i was like, dude, seriously? granted we would soon be crawling around under a truck, but i didn't want the initial first impression to be "wow, these guys are slobs"

Depends on the field or industry. The company I work at now had the same etiquette for outside sales guys in the valve sales and automation division before I got there, business or business casual. The customers are generally wearing jeans and work shirt uniforms. The company started getting feedback that customers were getting intimidated and/or 'talked down' to by a suit, so we've since gotten the salesmen to wear khakis and collar shirts or shop button up shirts. The customers feel more on the same level instead of trying to act formal during meetings.
